The 2018 Masters Thread

I was watching some swings on youtube and came across one that was on the 16th tee at the 2009 Masters. On the tee box was the black covering and looked incredibly ugly for Augusta. Just wondering what it is and if it was on during the entire event or just practice rounds.

Just seemed incredibly out of place and un-Augusta like

They put them there during practice rounds to keep the pros from making divots all over the tee box (They like to play multiple balls on the par threes). This protects the areas where they will put the tee markers during the tournament.

Aah makes sense. Thanks!

Why is Gary McCord always missing from the CBS golf crew when they do the Masters?

It was probably 10+ years ago now but he used the phrases "body bags" to describe the green contours and "bikini wax" to describe the grass length. So the joyless powers that be politely requested of CBS that McCord never step foot on the place again.

In fact, next year will be the silver anniversary.

1994 Masters, McCord at #17

I stopped it just before his body bags comment, his bikini wax comment is a few minutes later when Lehman is putting.

Its odd that jack has 18 majors and that

With the exception of TW

Only one has more than 9

And they all played like 50 years ago

Jack was like

Superman!

Or maybe the competition/fields back then were thin as a scotch and soda at a 1/2 price happy hour.

I mean, cmon. We got every winner of 7 or more majors besides Tiger Woods

Played in the 60s or 30s or 20s?

Phil has 5 and Rory has 4. I doubt they'll get to 7+ (they can, but I doubt it).

Spieth has 3 and the best chance currently. But he'd have to win at least 1 every other year to get to 10 majors in the next 15 years.

Then we have what Kaymer and ZJ at 2 a piece? Doubt they'll add many to the count.

Out of the "really good" guys who have 1 major, I don't think any of them are likely to get past even Phil Mickelson or Rory at 5/4 a piece. Highly unlikely.

(DJ, Day, Rose, Garcia, Koepka, etc. JT has more years left in his career and he's the only ??? regarding what he's got in store.)

I think it just goes to show how hard it is to win a major. It also goes in hand that there are only four a year, and of those four most players are only esp suited for two of those styles of play.

I agree with your analysis, but look at the numbers, Phil has been playing ~25 years and has been at the top of the game most of those years, yet he "only" has five majors.

As far as some of those guys winning a second, I would think DJ might get another win, but I wouldn't be shocked if both DJ and everyone else in the group you mentioned ended with one major.

I miss him at the Masters immensely. Yes, I feel the same way about the "joyless powers that be" (I couldn't put it better!) and I figure they are the green jacketed male senior managers at Augusta National. The broadcast is by far the most humorless every year. Those starch shirts should learn to laugh at themselves and let Gary back. He's a bona fide wit and is exactly what's needed.

I'd also like to see him back at the Masters. There's a lot to like about the Masters - first major of the year (and the only one played on the same course every year), beautiful course, plays tough but fair, the players enjoy it, etc. Having said that, the tournament is run by a group that takes themselves way too serious, and are hardly in a position to take a high moral ground. A one year ban would have been plenty, but there are players in the tournament that were still in diapers when McCord made his comments. Like him or not, it seems petty.

Personally, I can't stand listening to McCord. But I do agree the comments he (McCord) made as grounds for not being allowed back were petty, as stated above. (they were probably waiting for reason to toss him). My favorites are the British and US Open ranking The Masters as a toss up for #3 or #4. But there is no denying The Masters has a vibe that is very proper, based on tradition, old school, all that kind of stuff. No cell phones, the gallery are called 'patrons'. etc. etc.. and I do appreciate that side of the tournament having it's own distinct niche. So I get they don't want a guy who in their view comes off like Bill Murray in that old SNL skit where he is an airport lounge act/singer and I happen to agree with them. He is just not a good fit for that particular venue and the aura they want to project.
