"That guy" that goes LOW!

EKELLY

Recommended Posts

You ever play with "that guy" that shoots ridiculous scores? I have one in my little circle, and he's irritating as #%&@! Last week he dropped a 58 at one of the better clubs around Tampa. Not from the tips, nor the whites. The middle tees, about 6800. I've seen him pop 59 before, a dozen rounds between 62-65. In my prime I dropped a few sub 65 rounds, but never went super low. My mind just isn't/wasn't geared for it. Yes, he's an extreme ball-striker, REALLY good with the short irons. His par on most courses is 68, as he destroys the par-5's......

You must be missing Tiger this week while he's at The Masters

LOL......Yeah, I know 99% of all golfers in the world have never even seen somebody scare 72, much less anything better. Of course everyone on the WRX carries it 320, carries a scratch, and has seen at least 1 sub-60 round, so I didn't think the post was THAT far out in left field............LOL

Most of us are unfamiliar with that guy.

I had a guy drop a 63 on me at a match play one day, but that's as close I've come to seeing a round in the 50s in person.

Ive only been awed twice. I have seen was in high school then a practice round at sectionals. I played in high school with a current perennial PGA Tour player, I shot even 72 and thought I'd won, then I added up his score and said, "67?" "Yeah thought it was 66, oh 15 is a par 4? Yeah 67 then." I drove home thinking where was there five shots? It was all putting and a hole out.

Second time was with a former world number one, at Bears Club at sectionals few years ago. I caught up to him and he asked if I wanted to join, DUH!!! I went round in 69 he shot 66. We shook hands and I asked where's there 3 shots? He just laughed, "few putts here and there is all"

Yeah 69 was a good score, but like I played well didn't seem like he broke a sweat. Found out during that round Bears was his home track and owned the course record at the time, of course he was Medalist and went to the US Open.

One of my buds has a handful of course records ... 61-63's

Played in 2 US senior opens and two PGA events. He's an Am.

Caddied for him in a national mid-am - I missed the cut - where he shot 64 in the final round to erase a massive deficit and win

It's fun to watch

I've never gone lower than 68.

There's a guy in SoCal named Tyler Crawford. Made it to the semis of the U.S. Mid-Am last year, I believe. Shot 61, 63 in back to back tournament rounds at the Plantation from the tips two years ago 74ish rating, 140ish slope. Shot 61 at my home course from the members' tees at 6500, 71.8/135 in our member-guest one year. Won the Kelly Cup last year also.

Dude can flat out get it going.

I guess I’m just not playing with the right golfers.

The Lowest round I’ve ever seen in person in 35 years of playing is my own. 67.

Sounds like you're not. They're out there. :-)

Have a guy who used to be a member at our club who left to start a business and be more present in his young kids lives. When he was playing regularly, everybody was playing for second in club championships and other club events. Regularly would come shoot 66-68 to win things. He now comes up and plays a few times a year, typically without touching a club for months and will drop a ho hum 69 from our back tees (7243 75.1/136). Other than that, I play with a bunch of guys who when they get it going they will shoot high 60s to low 70s from those same tees. Never really play with guys who can drop the really, really low numbers.

It's always fun to watch the guys who come out and drop a 63 or 64 on a course that I feel like I'm playing well and am around even, even if it's frustrating as all hell.

Yeah, I just love to play in tournaments with those guys and be able to say, "I once shot 69 on a day when <fill in the blank with a great amateur known far and wide> shot 70."

It's an honor to play in tournaments with guys like that to me. When I get it going, I can compete on a one round basis on certain courses, but the really good players out there are just ... better. No two ways about it. :-)

Best I've seen up close was only a 9-hole round -- regular Wednesday night comp. Former Duke golfer and MN state am winner as a high school kid. He was -6 through 8 holes and needed a birdie for 29. Unfortunately he blocked his tee shot on the last hole. Total jail. Missed a par putt from about 15 feet, so ended up with a lousy 31.

The guy I speak of is in his mid-50's, and just has the "it" factor. I really don't think his mind works like the rest of us. I don't think he has any of the mental blocks that the rest of the world has when things are going exceptionally well, or bad. When he gets going, I keep waiting for him to make a mistake, and he just keeps striping it, and hitting it 10'. As for the "why isn't he on the Champions Tour?", he'll be the first to tell you, "those guys are amazingly consistent!" At that level, he doesn't have the "it" factor......

I played with one at my old club a few years back. Play with a low HC & yep a nice steady game tee to green and generally very very solid.

Play with a +HC on a scoring course and it is a different ball of wax.

Wife was away so went for a pm round and was paired up with two members I had not met. One around 80 and one in his early 60's. I went to the range as I waited (which I seldom do) and saw him hit laser after laser on the range and then on the course. Unfortunately he had to leave after 11 holes, but not sure he had a putt over 10'.......

What was fun is they had great attitudes and didn't take the game seriously (hit extra shots) and searched for balls.

He was one of those who I'm sure was a real player in his younger days and doubt he played any club tourneys or felt the need to prove himself.

Never saw him again unfortunately.....

We have a guy at our club as well, no one else is in the hunt when he shows up. Shot 63 on Wednesday to take all the $. Nice guy though and a really good stick, I know he has tried qualifying a few times for the US Open but hasn't quite made it. They are out there.
