Did anyone else read this? I knew a little about Reed's past, but didn't know all of this.

Always wonder how much truth there is in articles like this. Pat sounds like a complicated guy.

None of us will ever be able to say anything for sure. On one hand his parents/sister could be horrible people that he needed to get away from and on the other hand he could have been strong-armed in to this by his wife and her family. Or some combination of the two, or neither for all we know. As long as he stays quiet we'll never know the full story and everything is conjecture.

Wow, this guy seems to have more problems than a math book. Honestly, it’s fairly impressive the success he’s had with some of the things he’s had to overcome. I’ll reserve my opinions, as I’m sure there’s more we don’t know than we ever will. All I’ll say - the more I learn about him, the harder it is to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Read the whole story. All I can say is that family can be complicated. I don't think Patrick's wife is torpedoing his career (like Brooke Shield did with Andre Agassi). For a family to say "your future wife isn't right for you" is a harsh thing to say. I can empathize with his response. Their response may have even been more harsh than the way it was described in the article.

Obviously sad for his family to have no contact with him or his children but as an outsider looking in, there isn't much we can do to affect the situation. If Patrick wants to keep it this way, it will stay this way. His family has extended an olive branch, he turned it down. He obviously is angry/hurt enough that he wants nothing to do with them at this point in his life, maybe forever.

I agree with most of your comments. To a degree, it is none of my business and changes nothing about golf's history books. Yet, it is an interesting story of a guy who has some very real challenges in life (regardless of who's at fault).

Read the article by Shane Ryan about his college days and make up your own mind.

How many people could read an account of their own college days and feel great about it? And proudly display it to the world? I know I couldn't.

This is getting to be too much. We're judging a guy based on his college days? No thanks.

In a game where you call penalties on yourself, to be accused of cheating by your own teammates speaks volumes. You can choose not to believe that story. Like I said, make up your own mind.

That's the part of the Reed story that I was familiar with. I wasn't there, so I can't say for certain what happened. But I played qualifying rounds in college where every shot counted. One shot meant the difference between traveling for a tournament and staying home. Even being aware of that fact, I never once considered bending the rules in order to qualify. That's the standard that we hold all competitive golfers to, so it is off-putting to hear of a player who maybe didn't hold himself to the same standards.

I'm not criticizing the alcohol stuff. That happens to a bunch of folks - most just never get caught. But the golf stuff is fair game, in my opinion. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting read because I had no idea about the family troubles he's had.

My best friend just married a woman who's extremely controlling and he's become very distance from his family and friends. So I can't help but think this is the same thing.

I've had that happen to a friend, too. It's sad to me, but I guess if he's happy...

Are you saying that you think his family isn't completely blameless in this scenario? I'm sure there's a lot more to the story than the article describes. I tend to agree with you because there are usually at least two sides to every story. It is interesting, though.

The thing with winning The Masters is it definitely puts you more in the public eye. Reeds personal life will be scrutinized more than ever. He looks to be pretty bullet proof but that can change when you are continually scrutinized. I hope things work out for him. He seems confident in himself and his abilities and he is now Masters champion.

I almost feel bad for the guy, to reach the pinnacle and this is all people have to say about the guy.

Somehow I 100% agree with you. :) Regardless of the claims made against him, today should be the most glorious day of his life. And maybe it is. But I can't help but think there are parts of it that he would change if he could. Or maybe not.

There are 3 sides to every story. In this case it's Patrick's, his families and the truth, which we may never know. Seems unfair to judge someone based on 1/3 of the story. Just my $.02

They might be blameless. They might have thrown down over it in a driveway one night. The article paints a picture of only one scenario (the salacious one on the night of a Masters win) while offering no evidence of either.

I certainly wish I knew his side. And I'm not sure why, really. It effects me in no appreciable way whatsoever. Yet, I am fascinated by a guy who can disown his own family and keep climbing the Tour ladder without missing a beat. I'd love to see the 30 for 30 on it someday.

I've met lots of people in this life who can't stand their parents or inlaws or siblings and yet they still allow them to meet their grandkids, their nieces, nephews. Could care less about him having a drink in college or even cheating for that matter. Water under the bridge. But seriously? I won't let you see your grandchildren. Wow!

Totally agree. It's a one-sided article for sure. But part of that is because Reed refuses to talk about it, so his side can't be reported. Not that he is required to talk about it at all. Just fascinating to me.

I wondered how long before the old stories got rehashed. I expected a couple days not a couple hours.

Were you aware of his family discord? That's the first I'd heard of it. I assumed the guy he hugged on the 18th was his dad, but I guess it was his FIL. As a dad myself, I can't imagine what that felt like for his dad to watch on tv.

This same story came out several years ago and blew up on here. It wasn't long after his Top 5 comment.
