I know this question comes up once in while and I've also wondered myself. What would a pro shoot at one of the many public "Normal" courses we play? John Rahm played Canyon West somewhere in Texas. Looks like it is rated 72.6/136 from the back.

What makes it easier- the length? Because I think a lot of us have played courses that regularly host tournaments and don’t find them that much more challenging than your average solid courses.

 

Many golfers putt better on faster greens and i typically see longer more unkept rough in munis than on most pga tour courses.

That’s a very basic scorecard. Doesn’t have any information for the holes like yardage or handicap. How did he know which holes he was getting pops?

It’s so good that the main letters almost look like stamps. Hard to believe anyone’s calligraphy could be that good and fast enough to do a large number of cards in a reasonable time frame. Crazy.

I’m betting they only had to do one card.

 

That course has a few oddities. The front part of the 2nd green is very narrow, and they will put the pin in that section. No traps or trouble near the green, so no big deal. There’s a par 5 that turns 90 degrees right about 200 from the tee, with OB native area inside the dogleg. With a very aggressive line from the tee, it turns into a very short par 5. They used to have a rule that there was a penalty of you cut the dogleg and crossed a certain point on the fairway with your tee shot (safety reasons I believe).

 

Kinda surprised it has a 136 slope from the tips. I like to play there occasionally (not from the tips), but it’s certainly not one of the nicer courses in DFW.

Is one of the courses at PGA Pro school calligraphy? Seems like every one of em has it.

Pros play normal courses all the time, when they shoot 68 or 69 it typically won't make it to your social media feed though.

This really goes against my thought theory of how I could shoot in the 60s too if I could only play as well maintained courses as the pros.

I agree with this 100%

 

I get the chance a couple times a year to play TPC Twin Cites as one of our other owners in a member. Once I get used to the much faster pace then my course it's much easier to putt on those greens as they are so much smoother and true.

Pretty sick, even if he played from like 6700 yards or something. Greens must have been really nice, because I find it really annoying that my typical muni has tons of bumps, unfixed pitch marks, etc that make holing something from more than 20ft pretty much impossible or require great luck.

There is nothing difficult about Canyon West. Being from the area, I've played it a dozen times or so. But that is still a ridiculous score with the current course condition. Greens and bermuda coming out of dormancy, and I believe it was very windy that day.

Kinda reminds me of when poker pros play novice players...sometimes novice players are so bad they get lucky by staying in a hand. So even though the pro should have the advantage, they actually don't because they are used to the conditions/the theortical correct way to play

My local muni is host to a few of top high school golf teams in the area and the Course record is only 65. My buddy who played on the nationwide tour played it for the first time a couple of years ago and on punched greens and he shot a very easy 70. The greens cost him at least 4 strokes putting and if they had been there normal speed I am sure he would have been able to get some other approach shots and chips closer to the hole. And we are talking about a guy who is a great golfer but never made it to the big tour. So I would imagine that any of the top 50 in the world would not have much trouble shooting a 62 or less. When you can hit the ball as long as they do and have the kind of wedge game that most pro's have, a 6600 yard course is like putt putt for them.

i shot my best personal score one a course that is much more difficult on paper than the courses i play regularly. but, it was in such good condition it was amazing. the fairways were smooth mowed tight, the greens were great. They were soft and could hold shots, and smooth. I actually felt like a good putter for once. shot a one under par round.

 

The course i regularly play are shaggy, rough, and beaten. winter conditions year round really.

This is so true. I had a buddy in university that we played poker with. It was usually him, myself or my GF that won the games. After graduating with a Mechanical Eng. degree he joined the WPT for a few years. I played with him once after that. He schooled everyone so bad it was ridiculous.

I don't think people realize sometimes how good these guys are. I mean they are video game on easy mode good.

 

I recall about six or so years ago when Luke Donald was at the top of his game and the Canadian Open was played in Vancouver, they flew over from The Open Sunday night and went and did a charity event at a local private course (Capilano) on the following day (losing eight hours in time zones as well) and he shot 63.

I'm sure all have "bad" rounds but I don't think there is any denying top tour pros can absolutely light it up on a "regular" course. I was told before the Masters Wesley Bryan and John Rahm played at a local course Bartram Trail and each shot 61. It's 6700, par 72 with a rating of 71.9/139. Also, a couple years ago Beau Hossler shot a 65 in the Augusta University tournament at Forest Hills. It's 7100, par 72 with a rating of 74.3/137.
