Alberta Courses

Anyone playing this weekend?

I've got 9 holes at Silverwing tomorrow afternoon, and then 18 at Gleneagles on Sunday. Sorry Isaac, I agree that Gleneagls is grossly overpriced for this time of year, but options are limited right now. I believe Speargrass is opening next weekend, and probably a few others as well so choices will improve quickly. Great to be golfing in March!

Good to see the courses are starting to open back home, got one more week in Palm Springs, playing tomorrow, green fees at Escena are down a bit ($60.00/cart) as most Cdns are headed home. Decided to stay in Vegas for one week before we depart, looking forward to trying a few new desert courses, then Alberta bound, will miss the smell of fresh cut grass every morning.

Some pic's ....

Cheers

I just cancelled my tee time at Glen Eagles(2 people) for 12:20 tomorrow. Someone can call and grab that time if they want to play tomorrow. I got too many things going on to play.

Weather is supposed to be around 10 degrees for the next two weeks. I suspect by mid April 75% of the courses will be open by then.

I used Ted and Dave Custom Golf to bend my new irons flat and it was a disaster. Save your money and go elsewhere. Lyle at Simply Golf does much better work, but I was in hurry, and decided to give these guys a shot. It was the worst mistake I made with my brand new irons. They charge more than their competitors, and I thought that would have been reflected in the work they do, but I was clearly wrong. My irons came back damaged and dirty. No apology was given for the damage done to the clubs, just a lame explanation to a customer who knows better - you can bend irons without damaging them. He tried fixing the dents in the hosel by polishing them out. It was a complete joke. Also, since my clubs were there for work, you would expect them give them a quick wipe, but they came back dirtier than when I dropped them off.

Golf Town does better work, and that's a sad truth.

Doesn't seem to be a big enough market to support a proper custom shop in Calgary.

Bending some irons flat isn't custom job. It's pretty typical shop work. But I do agree that a Modern Golf, Cool Clubs, Club Champion type of of business would have a tough time in Calgary. It could be feasible but not with $45-50 oil.

Well I just golfed in March. Look on the positive side right.

Me too!!

Now I feel like a jerk for bitching about Glen Eagles. I still think it's a terrible golf course but we had fun today . Shooting 66 always puts a smile on your face ...

Man I'm a weirdo !

Glad you had fun out there. Exactly the reason I like the course, it's always fun (unless you struggle to elevate the ball).

I'm admittedly a homer as I play there all the time and enjoy it, but I am on board with the shot value (especially off the tee) being lacking for low handicaps that hit it far. If you are hitting the driver/3-wood well, it is very easy to go low. However, once you get beyond the upper echelon of players, it is a very challenging course that can yield some birdie/eagles as well as X's pretty easily. I help run a men's night out there and you wouldn't believe how many guests come out, say they are an 8 handicap and shoot in the high 40's on the front 9.

As far as the wind goes, that is what makes the course interesting. Depending on which way (and how hard) it's blowing can completely change how you have to play holes and for the longer hitter can bring some hazards into play that you never thought you had to worry about.

I also despise when the starter says you can't go for #1 green, but that seems to only be on weekends and if they do, I just set up at the creek and hit a big ol cut. Whoops, it landed on the green. Dang slice.

GolfTown south has one of the best builders around. I would recommend taking it to that GT.

Played Silverwing today. Its spring conditions and the greens are furry. It was windy and the planes were buzzin. This weekend there are handful of good courses. Next weekend a lot of the courses are open. pumped to say the least.

Played Silverwing today. Its mid-summer conditions and the greens are furry, fairways have dead patches and the bunkers are a muddy mess

Fixed your post for mid-July.

I see The Quarry in Edmonton is opening Saturday. Anyone heard of any other Edmonton area openings?

Only other ones I've seen are Sandpiper for April 6 & River Ridge April 7...and I'm assuming Lewis **Estates** not too long after as their range is open today...

Millwoods April 7, Raven Crest April 7 as well, Ranch April 12.

Twin WIllows is apparently this weekend (which I'm sure everyone is itching to know about...) but nothing official I guess...

Happy golfing to everyone that gets out there!
