Departed Sylvan Lake just after X-Mass headed for Phoenix (Gilbert) Az, rented a condo on water caught a bunch of fish got in some golf and today my B-new Tensei CK Pro Orange 60 custom orderd to my spec was delivered by WillPGA.

 

Swapped out the Tour Ad Di6 in my Ping G400 & had the swing weight checked @ D3.5 then went out to the range. What a difference in feel and performance, smooth with a mid-trajectory ball flight ... it's a winner! Seen some pic's on here of the new Ping G410, looking forward to demoing it at the Pete Carlson COD event in Palm Desert.

 

Did some E-Bay shopping and finding some great deals on new or demo clubs, did the BIN on 50 & 46 Titleist SM6 wedges for less than $80.00 each delivered, wish they would change the rules on limits before you have to pay duty/tax's.

 

Hanging around here for the month then off to Palm Springs for 2.5 months, hopefully the snow will be gone this year by mid-April.

Tks for the tip D-K .... it's 23 miles or 40 min drive from my place green fee's $54.00/cart, looks like a great track, will give it some thought for next week .... off to Barrett-Jackson this weekend, would love to find a mint 70 Z-28.

Bugs should be ok by then. Bring lots of spray just in case. Definitely the best course within 30 mins of the airport.

I would just play The Winston if its going to be a twilight round. Semi private no problem for the public to get out. Plus its closer to the airport and a better course than canal. Only thing is if its a Thursday they're generally closed for events.

Just a quick google map had blue devil 29 minutes from the airport. I would say canal is 5th or 6th best course that a public player could easily get on within 30 minutes from the airport. Canal might be the most criminally overrated course in the city by public players and I've played out there quite a bit and even won the Mastertune open out there.

 

Winston, Ingy, Shag, Blue devil are easy access and better courses. Valley Ridge and Lynx Ridge could be more enjoyable for some people both also easy access.. Earl Grey and Canyon though private are very open to reciprocal play with just a call from a pro for evening times. If I had 1 round to play in Calgary I'd drive to Ponoka and play Wolf Creek but that's gonna be a little out of the way for you. The golf scene here leaves a lot to be desired and there is not much GOOD golf here public or private. Lots of "its just ok" golf in Calgary and a golfing culture that supports that.

Courses like Canal, Speargrass, River Spirit and all the PGC properties Blue Devil included are the cattle processing plants of public golf in the city. They offer no architectural merit, maintain irresponsible agronomic practices and only exist to push as many people as possible from the first tee and the eighteenth green with no interest in providing the player with a memorable golfing experience. Calgary golf is inherently poor and until people here take notice and take the extra time to go to places like Wolf Creek, Sundre and Redwood Meadows golf in Calgary will continue to be stagnant with no hope of improvement. The fewer Heritage Pointes and Cottonwoods the better.

Not liking something personally and stating many people have a higher opinion of a course than is deserved are different. You can continue to argue the semantics all you want but I don't feel the need to defend my opinions on the state of golf in Calgary and derail this thread any further.

 

I will sit here and hope Carmoney gets bulldozed and continue to maintain that the Kananaskis

restoration was the biggest wasted opportunity to offer something of substance to the Alberta golfing community and tourism industry.

 

We all will continue to play the golf that we enjoy whether it be VIP golf membership, Shagganappi or The Calgary Golf Club.
