How do you guys film your swings?

Recommended Posts

I have been working on some swing theories and trying to incorporate them into my swing , along with 2 friends

When we are all on range together it’s easy to match what it feels like I’m doing , with actually doing it.

When I’m by myself I make a lot of mistakes ( I’m attempting pingman setup , slouched kind of and was super crowded on ball )

I have V1 & HUDL On my iPhone , does anyone have any suggestions for a tripod or mount to use at range? I keep precariously balancing it on my golf bag and have to go fish it out of the bag every 5 minutes when it falls in

I don’t know if this is right sub for this but I couldn’t think were else to put it

In a pinch use a range bucket. Just order one of those selfiegolf things.

I was thinking maybe a tripod?

I’m about to go see a pretty pricey instructor , he video tapes whole session which will be great to have - but also suggested that once we get me swinging really well during session , video that and then I can go back and compare when I go off the deep end

There’s so many on amazon I was hoping maybe someone had some personal recommendations

There are dozens of good options on Amazon. Look for one of the smaller tripods with grippy legs you can keep in your bag.

I have this one: JOBY GripTight GorillaPod Stand - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009GHYMB6

+1. I second this one. I just attach it to my golf bag and stand it far enough behind me to capture the swing. I use V1 as well, works great.

I have used tripod with phone holder and thought it was a pain. I now use a chair or bench with a range bucket and lean the phone against it - it’s easy and about the right height.

Ok I think I’m getting This one , I’m having issues with V1 on an unrelated note - I can’t seem to get it to show angles?

On the HUDL app there’s a protractor icon that lets me set angles really easily to see my tilt / secondary whatever else I want

I use my alignment stick, I cut a small piece from a wire coat hanger and made a hook. Attached that with tape to the rubber end knob and hang my phone with a case and just stick into the ground. Or you can make different attachments to fit your case and it's at the right height.

As has been mentioned location of the camera can make a major difference in the accuracy of the video you record. Especially in DTL video it can be deceptive if you're trying to see if you go too far inside or outside on the back swing. But even in face on video you can get incorrect angles that can actually make you think you're doing something wrong when in fact you're not. Having the camera just a few degrees either side of the ideal location can make the video almost worthless. Not having a tripod where you can easily set it to the correct height and quickly adjust the camera from side to side can be a major pain. Plus, on some driving ranges where the grass is in terrible shape, you are often changing your hitting spot to find some decent grass, and not having a tripod can make it time consuming to get everything reset. It really depends on how accurate you want to be with diagnosing any swing problems you are working on. If you have a friend with you, one of the best ways to get good video from a phone is to have your friend kneel down on one knee with a wedge back between his legs, with the wedge soled normally, and hold the phone on top of the grip. The wedge is pretty close to the perfect height and it steadies the phone so that you get clear stable video. Several pros and their caddies use this method regularly on the range at tournaments.

I'm still using the same Canon ZR800 camera and CSwing software on an old Dell laptop I've had since around 2009. If my camera ever gives up the ghost I'll probably be forced to upgrade everything since I don't think any of the new higher speed video cameras use firewire any longer.

This Loha tripod makes a Gorillapod feel like a toy in comparison. Much much better. Attach it to your bag and use it with your phone in either portrait or landscape.

Selfie golf to stabilize camera

then CMV or V1 app.

I use CMV because it's a lot quicker to access footage and has frame by frame. V1 is good for comparisons and the like, but there are too many steps before you can look at your swing

What is CMV?

free sports video app I found on the App Store a few years ago.

You can mark up videos with lines or whatever and gives you frame by frame playback. And that’s about it for the free version.

Free version of V1 has much more options, but it takes like 3 minutes to actually import a video in to watch whereas CMV you just open the video from your camera and start watching immediately

Are u recording the video in another app and then importing to v1? Recording directly in v1 takes about 1.5 seconds yo begin review after recording is stopped.

SelfieGolf

This is the best product I've found. It allows you to use an alignment stick (or club) stuck in the ground or attached to your bag. Quick and easy setup. The only caveat, I don't think it is wide enough for landscape mode.

I use this and a cell phone mount. The tripod fits in my bag, is a lot easier to setup at correct angles, and is more stable than an alignment stick in windy conditions

Can't envision how this tripod works with a cell phone mount. Do you have a photo of yours?

I found this so useful I bought two.

This one folds up and fits in my bag.

I've had it for about 18 months and it hasn't broken.

Every now and then in the wind I have to support it a little more with my golf bag to prevent it from falling down, but other than that it works great.

I’ve tried a lot of the options above, and they are all half measures. NOTHING is close to a sturdy tripod with the proper mount for a phone (like the pic a few posts above). The other ways might be cheaper or seem faster in the moment, but there will always be issues. Once the tripod is properly setup, you’ll get consistent video with no issues. It’s totally worth it.

As for tripods, I get that if you're on a budget, you're going to get the cheaper ones, but based on my experience of half a dozen broken $25-ish tripods, if you can afford it, it is well worth it to buy a more expensive, tougher tripod that will last a long time rather than buy multiple cheap ones.

The one in my photo is a tank, but it is still fully intact after 10 years. It is heavy, it is not small, but it won't blow over in the wind, can handle very heavy cameras or a tablet. The cheap backup tripods I used during that time are all in the landfill.
