Ribbed Grip - Any way to turn installed round grip to ribbed?

Marengo

Recommended Posts

A long time ago I put a ribbed grip on my 5 iron to try out. All the rest have round grips. I want to change all of my grips to a ribbed grip but before I go out and buy 13 new grips, is there a way to just slide something under an already installed grip to give the feel of a ribbed grip? Maybe try and slide half of a shishkebob skewer under the grip or something? I just wanted to see if anyone has tried something like this.

I know if it raises the grip too much it becomes non-conforming but I don't care. Just my tinkering mind at work late at night.

Golfworks sells rib inserts, you can look at the specs and compare to the skewer

Oh damn! I actually laughed out loud. A shish kebob skewer.

Perhaps one of those fairly thin wooden ones but you’d need to loosen the tape glue with solvent and a grip removal tool first to slide it i there.

I don’t understand why you would bother with this if you’ve already tried it in a 5 iron for quite some time. You certainly must know by now if you like it or not.

I’ve used reminder rib Tour velvets since they came out in the Mid 90’s. Only 5 bucks a grip. Just put ‘em on.

Those “add on” ribs the previous poster mentions must be put on before the grip. They are meant to be used if you really want a reminder grip and one is not made in the grip style you like.

I am going to go with just replacing the grips. I never used a 5 iron prior to a couple weeks ago. I have been going through some major changes with my swing and basically changed everything including how i grip the club. I tried the new swing with my old 5 iron and found that the ribbed part actually worked with the way my new grip is.

Good idea, if you want ribbed grips, buy ribbed grips. Im quite handy with the most, but the hardest thing i ever tried on golf equipment was making a round grip to become become a ribbed grip. Yes it can be done, but you most likely have a ribbed option for the grip model you wants to play, and if thats the case, buy them, dont even think about making them your self.

If i got 2 hard and advanced jobs to choose between, making round grips to ribbed. Vs grinding a whole set of irons to a specific weight and VCOG, i would choose the last, since that feels easier to make right

Making an existing installed grip 'ribbed' sounds like an impossible task to me, far too much hassle. However, if you don't mind removing the existing grip, then use a 'large' cable tie under the grip tape and then install the grip. That said though, just go and get a proper ribbed grip for the test...

Good luck.

You stick these on the shaft first if you really want a reminder on a grip that isn’t offered with one. It goes on first, Then your double sided tape.

Thanks for all the advice. I use the Iomic Sticky 1.8 grips and ordered enough to do my whole set. I just hope the shop I go to can put them on straight. Any tips on how to align them properly or is it just an eyeball test?

The ribbed kit from Golfworks comes with alignment plugs( See red cap below) You could also use a old CD with 2 marks 180 degrees from each other to mark the shaft.

If you want to make an existing grip into a reminder grip, just remove the grip, add a thin wire to the shaft and tape it in place with a wrap of tape and reinstall the grip. Just be certain you apply the proper thickness of wire.

A very long time ago, being dumb and patient, I actually folded tape onto the shaft. It worked, but was a tremendous amount of trouble. Hooking a wire to the end, taping it in place and reinstalling the grip works with a lot less trouble. I would recommend some naked copper wire of the sort used to make electric motors.

Be sure to closely examine the old grips to ensure they still have a long enough life to make the installation worthwhile.

No valid way of converting an already installed round grip into a grip with reminder.

Not a good idea to try to make a round grip into a grip with reminder, whether the rib is homemade or purchased as a kit.

Install the grip which comes with the reminder rib with air, which you could make adjustment as many times as you wish.

To align the reminder rib is depending on how the golfer grips the golf club ( how the golfer put his hands o the golf grip ) in such way he is aligned with the face perpendicular to the target line. Sole the golf club and run a line straight up from the back of the hosel all the way up the shaft should be a good start.

One of the local pros in my area uses a string to create a rib. He prefers that over a ribbed grip, because he can align the grip and the rib independently of each other.

I've tried to use guitar strings before - Ernie ball makes a 0.40 gauge A string. The problem was sometimes the tape didn't stick well down the full length of the wire and it would move, AND it was super hard to get the position of the rib right in the first place.

Instead, I found some hard to come by reminder versions of my preferred grips (crossline cord), and blew them on with air, which was very easy to make slight adjustments and get the position right. I'd highly recommend just getting reminder grips to start with (and air) over messing around with foreign objects and tape.
