7 wood recommendations

Alright ... I'm changing the bag a bit this year. The 3 wood is OUT, I can't do anything but hit it left. As such, the 5 wood that is mostly point and shoot is also out, both consolidated with a 16.5 tour edge CB5 FOUR WOOD at 16.5 degrees. So far I am killing this thing. A 60* wedge is added .. experimentally.

 

The 3 iron, which hasn't been hit more than twice since 2015 is also out. And a nice 7 wood will sit in it's place.

 

I'd prefer another Tour edge CB5 .. but I can't really find one. Any suggestions for a low cost, slightly used 7 wood that comes with a good shaft? I'd like to find one for ... 40-100 bucks or so. To the thin crowd of 7 wood players .. what are you using? TIA

I am using a G400 7 wood, it doesn’t fit the low cost but it is an amazing club. You might could get an earlier model ping 7 wood cheaper

SLDR 5HL at 21*. I have it now and I love it. Nice high shots, good feel. New ones are $85.

I like the XR16 7 wood, but have lately gone back to a King F6 3 hybrid to keep the ball flight down. Will probably flip flop back to the 7 wood eventually, though.

I'm using a Ping G 7 wood with a even flow blue shaft in it. Point and shoot for me on really long Par 3's. I pieced it together for under $170 total from the bay. When I was originally looking, it's hard to find a 7 wood that doesn't have a senior flex shaft on it.

If you plan on also hitting from the rough. I would look at Cobra’s fairways with rails.

I'm a fan of the Titleist 915 21 degree with the standard blue Diamana shaft. I like it because it plays well from the tee, the fairway and most rough and you can work it like crazy. For comparison, I also carry an Epic 5 wood in 18 degrees, which is crazy long (I don't need a 3 wood anymore and no longer carry it), but I can't work it very well at all. The Epic is high and straight. The Titleist is high and workable.

For low cost option CPO has the V series 7 wood. Maybe on of my favorite. Pretty much a point and shoot club.

I picked up first a 7 wood, then a 5 wood, Mizuno JPX with Fujikura Motore shafts. Adjustable. For me, they fit my eye and hands. Just feel confident addressing the ball. Ball flight can be very high. With the 7 wood I can hit it over 200 yards and it will stop within three feet of ball mark.

I agree completely. It's easy to launch and hard to hit squint.

Last week in Callaway Pre-owned ebay store they had a few Epic Heavenwood on sale. Like new with stock regular shaft for $120ish and stiff shafts for $150ish.

I've recent fallen in love with the F7 7/8 wood. It's really versatile, and the rails really do help hitting out of some nasty lies. I play mine about 3/4" shorter than standard and added a little weight to bring the swingweight up.

Had an original PING Rapture 20* #7 wood in the bag for years now and still as good as any hybrid or fairway for me. Got to say last couple of Ping's, Cally Steelhead XR and Titleist 915/917 are also really performers too

Some suggestions:

• Recent Tour Edge non-tour FWs such as the XCG7, the E8 and E9 might work for you. (No TE "tour" heads come in 7W).
  
• Callaway Alpha 815 with 18* head set to 20*.
  
• Cobra FlyZ family fairway woods (stock shafts for FlyZ long clubs are a bit heavier than those of most manufacturers)

Thanks for all the suggestions ... I'm leaning towards a CB2 or VSTEEL right now. It depends on what I can find in the wild. Lots of senior flex. :) In all likelihood I am going to have to buy a new shaft (TBD..) and build it up ... maybe I can tear apart my 3 wood and use that shaft, which would probably be ok in a 7 wood, tipped a bit. I like it in the 5 wood more than the 3. I need a stiffer shaft for the 3 wood anyway.

 

I haven't really been keeping tabs on the state of golf equipment, I wasn't sure if a certain manufacturer was killing it these days. If I wanted to go newer perhaps the Callaway woods would be a good move. I've had previous bad luck with Ping and Titleist woods.

My vote would be for the XR16. The Heavenwood is really nice, but probably too close to your 5 wood in distance.

After reading this thread and others I picked up a V steel 7 wood.

Came with a reg. flex stock MAS shaft....any suggestions on a replacement?

Something cheap in stiff, mid launch.

I love my V-steel, but I think what's more important is getting a good shaft for it. You might want to try something a bit heavier to keep ball flight down a touch (other factors will also affect this). Ideally, for my 7w I would like to find a slightly heavier version of the same shaft I have now, just to give me even better control and more penetration in the wind.

Think about the sort of shots you want to hit with your 7w, then play around with shafts accordingly.

I still love my G15 7 wood. Now I am reshafting E8 7 wood. G15's smaller head makes it more versatile from the rough while E8 seems to be little more forgiving. I wish CB5 or xcg7 beta comes in 7 wood.
