7 wood gamers - how long is your 7 wood?

geochitown

Recommended Posts

I’m considering adding a 7 wood to the bag and have built two

Callaway steelhead xr 21 with thump f75s

Wishon 950hc 21 with matrix 8M2 stuff

This will be a contender to replace/rotate with 21/22 hybrid

I play driver 43.75-44 and 5 wood (tee club only) at 41.75

Considering playing 7 wood at 40.5-40.75

100-105 mph driver swing speed

I like hybrids (don’t have a problem hooking them) but wanting to give a short higher lofted fwy a go

So, what length do you play your 7 woods?

I dont personally play a 7 wood, but like the idea. I can achieve basically the same shot a 7 would have(high, soft landing from 215ish yards?) with a hybrid.

If i were u i would leave your test clubs long and work down to what ever is comfy and what produces the shot u are looking for? You will go thru a few grips and some range balls, but u will get there. I dont think you will really get an exact answer because ive seen fairway wood and rescue/hybbrid lengths that are all over the board! Take the head that u like the looks of best.. Start with a longer shaft...hit a few shots and go tfom there. If u dont like the feel and traj then cut an inch and start all over. Eventually u will find your desired length.

I have gravitated from 3 to 4 to 5 wood because I found that 15-16.5 went too far for my needs as an alternate tee club to my driver

Todd Sones recommends that drivers, being as accurate as the distant pasts’ 3 woods, second longest club be a 18-19 degree fairway as a club that can hit from rough

Then hybrids for 3 and 4 irin replacement, all leading to his favorite recommendation, 4 wedges, because most amateurs score with wedges rather than 3 woods

I can hit my 5 wood 225 off of the tee

I have thought to split difference between my 16.5 and 18* with a 17* (still sussing that out)

4h at 22 I can hit 200-210

Try the callaway heavenwood. Super easy to hit. Should be cheap on the bay too. Looks like it measures 43”. I usually choke down a little.

As I've gotten older felt like experimenting as I recall how some of the older players at my old club played the original Callaway Heavenwood back in the original warbird days.

So, I have a Razr Fit Xtreme 7 wood head on a 4 wood length Matrix Black Tie and won't part with it. So versatile and controllable.

She's good (no wind for these #s) from 190 to 215-20 depending on how hard I hit it and where I grip it.

Highly recommend 7 wood if you have tried one.

I’m lookiing to hear from people regarding 7 wood lengths and relevant details from players such as driver swing speed, bag makeup etc

My plan is to likely play the 7 woods at 40.75

Steelhead xr 21 with thump f75s tipped 1 inch

Wishon 950hc 21 with matrix 8m2 stiff tipped 2”

I play it between 41-41.5.

I like my XR16 7 wood at standard length, but have started replacing it with a 19.5 degree Cobra King F6 hybrid or an M2 19 degree hybrid. The 7 wood has started to balloon and lose a lot of distance lately -- maybe some kind of unintentional swing change. I do think the 7 wood flies nice and straight and the XR16 sweet spot is awesome. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the responses so far!

My 22 hybrid has a thump shaft in it, which has been great for me

I play it short, like 38.75” so 0.25 shorter than std 3 iron length

So, that’s part of what is droning me to go shorter than 41 for 7 wood

Also my next longest fairway is 41.76 so thinking about the 1” delta length as a minimum for me in fairways

My driver is 44.5 inches, 4 wood(16.5*) is 42.5 inches, and 7 wood(21*) is 41.5 inches long and I am comfortable with that length. Many of today's fairway-metals are simply too long and too light for my wild swing.

I am a short hitter(Driver: 230-250 yards, 4 wood: 220-230 yards, 7 wood: 200-210 yards, 4 iron: 190-200 yards)

The heavenwood is money. I'm a slow swinger trying to get faster (80mph driver now up to 90ish). When I nut a M2 3HL it can go. But most of the time I don't strike it that well. The Epic Heavenwood is now my go to "hit it as far as I can" club off the deck. Had a rare birdie chance on a long par 5 because my third shot landed on the green and stopped within 5 yards. That never ever happens with me (3 shots to get close to the green, one shot to get on usually).

Mine came with a Hzrdus shaft and I'm not a shaft person, but I think I may switch out to this. Feels so much better than my 3HL shaft which feels super floppy.

Callaway Preowned usually has some in almost new condition (Mine was not even used) for about $100. The Epic Heavenwood is adjustable. I turned it down to 19 degrees since I use it more than my 3HL now.

Here is one in like new condition for $112. https://www.ebay.com/itm/CALLAWAY-GOLF-2017-GBB-EPIC-FAIRWAY-HEAVENWOOD-GRAPHITE-REGULAR/312048674065

Ping g20 driver at 44" my SS is about 108, maybe touching 110 on a good day

Rapture v2 4 wood at 42.5" (one of my favorite clubs i've ever owned). I hit it about 235 in the air and love the ball flight/feel

Depending on the course, i'll add the Rapture V2 7 wood. i believe it is 41" in length. Moon balls that go about 220 and don't roll out. I can't generate that shot with any other club including hybrids.

I have a Maltby UFW 7 Wood with the old ProLaunch Blue 95x shaft at 40.5 inches.

If you are going to play it this short, I would recommend to take some steps to make sure the total weight/swing weight work out.

I had an older Callaway 7 wood that I had cut a half inch off of and it took a crap load of high density lead tape to get it to feel somewhat close to what it did before it was cut....but still was not perfect.

That is why I went with a much heavier shaft. Secondly, it is nice to have a weight that screws into the head that you can adjust if needed. If you don't have any of this, get fit.

If you are looking to try out a club like this for cheap....take this information and try out a Malby UFW head with a heavier version of your favorite shaft. It goes straight, the rails on the bottom play great off the turf, it just has somewhat of a softball bat sound....but I actually kind of like it.

Also note that it has the screw in weight and only costs $45 bucks for the head.

This head at this length is perfect for me at a distance I had struggled with before....always had better luck with an iron or longer FW wood....just did not like the 7 wood at 41 inches for some reason...
