Anyone only play 2 wedges after the PW?

Recommended Posts

I have a 43 PW and 48 W from my set and I play them as irons with full shots. I only consider my 54 and 60 as true wedges. So currently my setup looks like 48-54-60 but I am I thinking about going with a 48-52-58. Not sure yet.

The most club ho’ing I’ve done has been with wedges. All the different shapes, grinds, lofts have been fun to tinker with. I’ve settle on a PW, 52, 58 setup. For some reason the simplicity has taken a lot of guess work out of green side and full shots. Anyone else use something similar?

Yes, I have done this for years. I sometimes add the 56° and drop my 4 iron. But, primarily I play 47°, 52° and 60°. I'm able to cover whatever I need with this setup. I've learned to avoid the distance/s that would be in between the 52° and 60° as far as those awkward yardages go.

All good input here guys thanks a lot. Like many have mentioned, the 60 was just unecessary for me and whether it was not enough practice with it was just costing me green side strokes. Opening up the 58 has been more than enough when I need it. Having a simple bump and run and a little more loft when there’s something between the lie and the landing spot has been exactly what I’ve been looking for. I also added a little more relief to my 58 and I was surprised how much I could tell the difference and I’m still a 12 hcp.

I go D, 3w, 4i. Would love to add a club between the 3w and 4i but my ball striking in tighter lies isn’t there yet.

My PW is 50* or thereabouts. I only have the 58* SW after and have played that way for more than 30 years. The difference is that what they call wedges these days are the short irons of the past.

This is my zip code, as well. I play either 55/60 on top of a 50* PW, or a lone 58.

Might play my PW at 52* this season, in which case I'll likely just use the 58* lone wedge.

Ask your club pro to give you some heel relief on your 58* and it will allow you to open a bit to 60* or more without the club face changing appearance much. Heel relief buys you a lot of clubs in the same club. The tricky part is learning to use it, which, again leads me to encourage the purchase of stainless clubs which will then allow you to use the same wedge forever and a day.

One of the 58* wedges I'm thinking of using is a Troon Grind. I probably won't need the relief if it's in the bag. ;)

Always been like that for me....PW around 48, then 52 and 56 wedges. No need for anything over the 56 as I open the face for flop shots closer in or in the sand.

Maybe I should consider 48-52-56 instead of a 48-52-58.

Yeah, I do currently. I go 46 (PW) and then 52 and 58. The reasoning is based on the fact that I am either not good enough to warrant needing more wedges, or that I am actually good enough not to need more. Gotta love something that plays into humility and arrogance at the same time.

Interesting topic that I never get bored discussing. :)

When I played 52/56/60 indecision often reigned and when I did pull the 60 I probably stuffed up the shot at least 50% of the time. So I dropped the 60 permanently years ago and just played 52/56. Recently I have started experimenting with 52/58, 50/56 and even the 4 wedge setup 50/54/58.

With the 50/54/58 I don't have the same level of indecision I did with 52/56/60. The 50 and 54 give me better distance gapping inside 100m. Around the green I use the 50 where I want to chip and run. Where I need to flight the ball more I use the 54. The 58 is mainly used from the sand.

I would play 50/54/58 all the time if I was allowed 15 clubs. Since I'm only allowed 14 I play 52/58 so that I can carry a 4 iron (24°) and an extra hybrid.

Most of my best golf I used a PW (47), a GW (52), and a SW (56). I've never loved a 58 or a 60. For simplicity (and a lighter bag) I switched to a PW (47) and just a 54* SW for a few rounds over the winter. My scores were not impacted one bit. I will say that I think there are so many factors involved that one can't possibly decide by just reading. The ball you play matters. The greens you play matter. The bunkers you play matter. The rough you play matters. And the length of holes on your course matter. Keep experimenting, but don't sweat it, the set up you choose probably won't change your scores any, just your perception...

I have old school lofts, my PW is 50*, so I guess my 9i is really a PW these days. But after that I play just a 56 and a 60. Always worked for me. I could do fine without the 60 but I do use it for short sided and delicate little shots and most greenside bunker shots without having to manipulate the face of my 56.

Long time 2 wedge user here - either 52&58 or 54&60. Most of the iron sets I play with comes with a 46* or 47* PW.

I play PW 44, AW 49 and SW 56. I had a 60 but took it out because I felt I can open the 56 and hit decent flops with it. I was using it a lot more than the 60.

Same deal here. I'm playing a 46 PW, 50 GW and 56 SW.

I asked a similar question to my teaching pro, his suggestion was to pull the LW out and learn to hit different shots with the SW. Just about every lesson, he has me working on different shots with the 56 to get a better feel.

Interesting how the PW constantly gets overlooked as a wedge because it's in the iron set.

I've always played 4 wedges, but made the switch this year to play the 46 degree SM7 instead of the stock PW AP2. Loving the decision so far, ton of versatility and great spin around the greens for the long bump and runs.

With 4 wedges I still have loads of options at the top of my bag. Between my 4 iron, 4 hybrid and 3 wood there isn't a shot between 200 and 250 yards I can't go after.

3 wedges for me. 46, 52, 58. Too many options with 4 wedges. Tried 4 before, struggled with it and wedge play is my strength. I have about a 20 yard gap with them (140, 120, 95) and I know how to play tweener shots with them and flight them if need be as well. 3 is way better for me.

With my last iron set, the PW was 44 and GW was 49 so I played a 54 and 58. I was very happy with this setup. I changed iron sets (for now anyway) and my PW is 43 but the GW is only 47 so I went with 52, 56 and 60 (sometimes). I didn't think I could stay with the old wedge setup and go 47, 54 and 58 since I will have a yardage gap between the GW at 47 and the SW at 54. I have no problem using the high lofted wedge 58 or 60 but I do not use them much. I mainly use my PW and GW for full shots and the 52 for around the green.

I am gonna do alot of experimenting and testing to see what wedges get used then adjust from there! I think it is crazy to have to carry 4 or 5 wedges nowadays based on lofts and yardage gaps. I did go from 3wd/5wd combo to a 4wd/4H combo at the top of the bag which helped alot and helped simplified it so I am hoping I can do the same with the wedge setup! Maybe just the 52 and a 60! Time will tell!

Seriously I know jacked lofts get discussed here a lot and people argue "who cares what number is stamped on the bottom of the club" but your PW and GW are literally my 9 iron and PW. 43° for a PW is just ridiculous. When I got back into golf in the mid 2000's I was told that the modern 3 - PW was really yesterdays 2 - 9 iron and 4 - GW was equivalent to the old 3 - PW (24° - 52°). Nowadays 5 - PW is more like old school 3 - 8 iron. Even the GW is a 9 iron.

It seems the manufacturers agree a sand wedge still needs to be 54-56° and most sets still make the GW about 50°. They get there with 5° increments making up for the strong lofts in the long to mid irons. But with your new clubs it seems the manufacturer has given up all pretence of traditional lofts and is just making the whole set a full club stronger. I'm guessing AP3s?
