Anyone only play 2 wedges after the PW?

Recommended Posts

Used to play 48(PW) - 54 - 58, honestly after doing it for a number of years I just got used to the yardage gap between the P and the 54, was like 20 yards but was able to manipulate my PW really well after practice. I always thought it was easier to manipulate a PW than a long iron or hybrid, allows for that one extra long club that made a difference to me.

Unfortunately with my new iron set have to go 46 - 50 - 54 - 58 now with the stronger PW, but still open to taking the 50 out of the bag if need be for tournaments/ some courses.

I sort of went in the opposite direction from the previous post. Had a 46 deg PW for the longest time and went 50, 56 and 60. Made all the sense in the world to me.

Just picked up a set of the original Nike blades where the PW is the more “traditional” 49 deg. So now I plan to go PW(49), 54 and 58.

To me - It’s about the gaps/distances and shots you want to hit with the tools, and not how many of this or that club you have in the bag. I never used the 50 for anything other than full / partial approach shots. Now that job is done by the 49 deg PW. As lofts get stronger, it makes sense to have more wedges and not let the OEM driven 6-7 degree gaps at the higher loft end of the bag mess up your game and scores.

Yes. Previously (past 10yrs) played 48 pw, then 54&60 wedges. This year going with 46 pw, with 52&58.

Yes and don’t regret dumping one going from 3/2 after PW. Opens a slot down low for driving iron for me....and 52/58 is just as versatile as 51/56/60. At least for me....

A couple months ago I bought a couple Hogan TK15 wedges to try this.

PW 43

AW 48.5

52 wedge

58 wedge

Been playing really well with this setup. Hope I didn’t just jinx it...

I don’t take full swings with my 52 or 58. Anything inside 80 yards is a less than full swing with my AW or 52/58...

TK wedges are really nice!

I dabble both ways. But majority of my rounds. And most of my good rounds have been 48 54 59. 60 is ok too. I just have a love affair with a full sole vokey 300 series copper 59.

46* Vokey

52* Cleveland 588 forged with heel and toe relief

59* Vokey 300 copper

I feel more comfortable with 3/4 and 1/2 swings with my wedges than I do with full swings. I play the majority of short game shots with 52* and manipulate the club face and hand position. I also have the same love affair with the Vokey 300 59*.

Tried to do the 2 wedge setup, but it created too big a hole in that end of the bag.

Especially with lofts being what they are, I think it's hard for some to get over that issue, unless you're one that is A) super comfortable with playing a multitude of shots from varied distances with a SW, or B) You choose to forgo the LW.

Unfortunately, I am neither or those two. Having played 3 wedges since high school days, i'm more or less set with it now I think. The only way I would go with 2 wedges is if maybe I would have the time to practice a lot and wrap my head around a very versatile 54* that would replace the 52/56, but I can say for certain I would have a hard time giving up the 60*

I recently switched to a 46, 52, and 58. Exchanged the 58 for my 56 and 60.

When I was a kid, I learned to hit every short game shot with a 56, and eventually added a gap wedge for my in between wedge shots and low running pitches. For some reason, I threw a wrench in everything I knew how to do and added a 60. It created confusion more than anything, as I could never decide when to hit the 56 or 60 around the greens. Plus, I had a 35 yard gap between my 5 wood and 4 iron.

Like someone said earlier, I suspect that I’m too dumb and indecisive to play 4 wedges, but my ego says I don’t need more wedges to hit all of the shots.

I have played that way for years. 46 50 & 58 bent to 56 to reduce bounce. Open the face or close it on any wedge and you can easily fill in the gaps. Lots of practice with PW hitting partial shots, .

I'm normally a 4 wedge guy but this weekend I'm playing in a tourney on a course that will be playing longer than I normally play so I'm swapping out my 50 and 54 for a 52 and adding the 2h.

After a couple of practice rounds and a couple of range sessions I'm back to my normal 4 wedge setup for tomorrows tourney round. The 3 wedge setup just doesn't work like I like.

I second that.

I game the same set up but with a standard 56. There's an open spot in my bag so I stuck the 60 in for a round yesterday; it never came out of the bag. I struggle to find a shot I can't hit with a 56 within range. Even had one off the dirt cart path into an elevated green yesterday.

I can see how it depends on your game but my preference is to build a feel and touch for multiple shots types with all wedges.

Same as you, OP...

PW 48.0°

GW 52.0°

LW 58.0°

I've played it for about 8 years now. Like you say, simplicity.

Now. I'd be lying if I didn't say that very, very, recently, I've been considering a 64.0°. BUT. To even be considered, the shape must be ideal, perfect. I. WILL. NOT. SETTLE. Would strictly be used for short sided shots, bunker shots and lobs. The only reason, ONLY, I'm even considering this is because my recent setup change leaves me playing only 13 clubs and the 14th slot is driving me nuts internally.

I have never played a 64°, to be quite honest, I don't think I trust myself with it!

I've got one and it's great, ground some heel relief and it's my go to flopper. I'm definitely no Phil, but I can full swing it, open, over 20 foot trees with little room. I also hit it full about 75 yards. Once you practice with it, it's much easier to be confident. You need a 14th, why not something that can get you out of jail? Up and downs from elevations or low areas are much more doable.

I’m moving to a 52/58 set up this year. I’ve been a 50/54/60 user for several years but did some experimenting at the end of last season with the 52/58 with good results.

I used the 50 and 56 for full shots mostly, but I found I can easily choke down on the 52 and PW to achieve the same results I was getting with the 50/54. I actually found I was more accurate that way.

Switching to the 52/58 combo has helped me fill the spot between my 4 iron and hybrid.

Good to hear and glad to see you are getting results. I have been doing 50,54 and 60 Vokeys since SM5 came out but I like the idea of simplifying and I need a slot for when I inevitably buy the Square Shot Wedge thingy :)

I am going to a Titleist demo day later today to try out the SM7s. Probably going to do a 58k as the 60k has been a great bunker/ green side rough club and the 58 will give me a bit more full shot usage. I really like the 50 and use it for 115-120 full yard shots. My 54 is meh . Thinking 52 would be a good compromise. Going PW to 54 is too big of a gap for me.

As an unrelated aside - as a Mizuno Ho I f8nally got to try some of their wedges yesterday. S16, T7 and an older S5. All I can say is yuk! Really surprised and disappointed. Fugly, clunky looking and feel was nothing special. Sticking with Vokeys...

First range session this year; no problem dialing in my 45* PW, 51* GW and 57* LW.

I did notice that I do like to hit "less than full shots" from the fairway and around the greens.

What do you do when it's windy?

When it's breezy, swing easy. ;)

Been thinking about going to a 46/52/56 set up, as of now I have 46/50/54/58. I feel i dont really use the 50 that often, and dont think removing it will di anything to my game, though the cost of swapping is the only thing hindering the swap

If you don't use the 50 much why not just remove it and play 46/54/58?

It depends... in my bag right now I have my PW (bent strong to 46*) followed by a 50*, 54*, 58*. I found I was playing a lot of courses where my 3h never left the bag and decided to swap it out for the additional gap wedge. However, I may have only used my 50* once in the last 5 months. If I played more than the same 2-3 courses I'd probably swap the 50* back out for the additional hybrid.
