My Eye 2 wedges are 50.5, 56.5 (1/4 strong) and 61. It seems to work. I just found and bought a set of new Tommy Armour Silverback 845m irons missing the eight iron. Found an 8 iron and will use a 54 and 60 with the sets 47 degree PW.

I am fortunate that I learned to love the 60 degree lob wedge early on so that has been a Mainstay in my bag for the last 25 years.

However, today I placed an order for 3 Mack Daddy 4 wedges in the Raw finish at the 50 degree, 56 bent to 55 degree and 60 degree lofts.

It will be my first time in the last 25 years that I have experimented with anything other than my mainstay of 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges.

I currently go Driver, 2 hybrid, 3 hybrid then 4 through pitching wedge and the three wedges I mentioned.

However, as my bag is being replaced this year with everything, I am going to drop the four iron and replace it with a 15.5 degree fairway wood.

My problem was when I ran 3 wedges after my P, I felt my gaps were to close together. I felt like I had to many options. Do I hit this harder, hit this softer, open, close etc.. I basically started over and consolidated down to 45P 50 and 56, covers my gap, my low fringe chips then my 56 is my multi purpose utility tool, higher bounce to save me out of the sand, works in the short stuff too since I’m a natural digger. Keeps it simple now

I go from 47° PW to 54° SW to 60° Lobber. I love it. I think I became a better wedge player with less clubs, because it allowed me to be more creative. I'd rather hit a half shot with my PW from 110 yards than an all out GW.

47,54,60 here as well and I completely agree that it helps improve skill level by making you be more creative.

I struggle with yardage gaps on my long irons (I have still yet to find a consistent club for anywhere between 190-200 yard shots) so to stay at the limit I play 44 pw 52 cavity back gap wedge and a 58 s grind sand/lob wedge.

I’ve never found where I’ve needed a true lob wedge and I can be creative enough with the 52 that my short game has never been my weakest link.

  • 3 weeks later...

I’ve been playing with 46, 52, 56 lately just to see if I notice any issues. So far the scores are the same but short game is getting more predictable and easier. When the i200s get here I will try the stock UW at 50* and the 56* and will see if the gaps work out. It’s nice to have an extra spot in the bag for a 5W, extra hybrid, or 60*+.

I’ll also add the MD forged I have in 56* is much easier to hit consistent full shots than the 54 and 58 MD2 I have been using, but also wonderful around the greens.

Have been playing a 46° pw then a 52,56,60. For a long time. Gonna go 46, 52,58 now that my wedges are worn out. I play driver,3w,3 hybrid on top.

pw (47*), 52* and 58*

i've played this setup for 12 years with no issues. i did play a 47*, 54*, 60* setup prior for two years, but decided i had too much of a gap between pw and 54.

in fairness to some, if you have a pw that is 43*, having 4 wedges is equal to someone with a 46-48* pw, because they likely have a 4 iron with the same loft as my 3 iron or maybe even less loft.

I've experimented with 4 wedges when I went to the MP63's since the PW is 46 degrees. I had 46, 50, 54, 60. But found I rarely ever used the 50 (I guess since I grew up not having that club). So, I just went back to 54 and 60. I bounce back and forth between MP33's and MP63's (different lofts), so I just leave the wedges alone now.

52/58 for me. I do switch to a 3 wedge setup every once in a while... 50, 54, 58. I rarely use the 54, to be honest.

I'm still doing the PW, 52-10, 56-14, and 60-8. Sometimes I need something with more loft, and less bounce, especially when it's tight and hard around the greens. But, I could probably take out my 60. I just don't know what I would add - another longer club? Doubt it.

just refreshed my setup ..but I think I always done more wedges than top end clubs as I find 130 hits the laser pretty frequently

Right now I have PW ( should be 47*) 52* 56* 60* (hitting the PW too long and leaving too much of a gap between the 52) so just replaced the 52 and 56 with 50 and 55

so gapping should be pw 50 55 60

should give me 140 130 115 100 yards stock

47* PW, 54* and 60* after... it just works. The 47* is versatile enough for me to cover the gaps between maxed 47* and 54*. For me, I prefer adding a driving iron, or lofted Fwy wood depending on the course. Less options = more shot-making creativity and less confusion on shorter yardage situations.

My PW is 48*, but my experience is similar to yours - my short game has gotten quite good after giving my 52* gap wedge the axe and switching to 54* gap and 60* PM grind sand/lob. There's less thinking and more shotmaking.

But not everybody enjoys partial shots, so I can see why 4 wedges would appeal to some. 5 seems really excessive still, even with super strong lofted sets.

Long time 52 58 user here. For me it depends on the player, I'm happy enough opening up my 58 when I need to and playing softer shots when 52 is too much club.

If you're more of a "a full swing with this wedge goes this far....or a 3/4 swing goes this far" player then having extra (properly gapped) wedges could help!
