Oakville, ON Canada trip!

Hey all, I am heading down to Oakville on business May 8th to 14th. I am hoping the weather is good enough to golf up there during that time. Anyone interested in playing a round or two Saturday and Sunday?

If not, can anyone in the area recommend some good courses to check out? Or hell, any good sites to see. I have never been to Canada before so this is pretty exciting for me.

It will definitely be warm enough. Might be battling spring aeration.

I’m pretty sure Toronto folk frequent a local forum, I don’t seem much action on here from that part of the country.

I grew up in Oakville, and used to work at Glen Abbey GC, semi-permanent home to the PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open. It's good course, challenging but fair. I'm not sure what the rates are these days but should make for an enjoyable round.

Lots of good courses in the area, but other than the Abbey, not much else golfwise in Oakville. Actually not much of anything to do in Oakville.

Looks like 141-161, I am assuming CAD so that’s not too bad. Looks like a pretty good course. I’ll definitely have to keep an eye on the weather report the weak before. I might drive out to Niagra Falls since I’ll be in that area. Sounds like a cool adventure.

I live next door to Oakville and can second Glen Abbey. Deerfield is usually ok and modestly priced. Next door in Burlington, Hidden Lake is pretty good. Indian Wells can be tricky. Unfortunately, a lot of the nicer public/semi-private clubs around here were bought up by Clublink, so a membership is required.

Re a website for the locals, try torontogolfnuts.com

I would be happy to play a round with you, but I can only do during the week, not the weekend of 13-14.

Slow start to the season here as 2 weeks ago there was a small ice storm. Everything opened this weekend or upcoming week.

Glen Abbey is good if you want to play a PGA Tour Course. The front 9 is a bit boring, but once you hit the 11th tee box and you enter the valley its pretty good. You can always check golf now for tee times.

If you are going to be in the Niagara region you can play Whirlpool GC, Royal Niagara or Legends of Niagara.

If you have a weekday off and you are looking to golf and you are near Toronto, I would suggest looking up Osprey Valley (54 holes onsite) and they have a play all day for $150-175 CAD and they are some of the best courses you can play.

Get on Torontogolfnuts.com if you want to play with a local, there are a bunch of guys from that forum on here but might not check.

Sweet fellas, thanks for the information. Unfortunately I will only have the weekend off but I am pretty sure this won’t be the last time they send me out to Oakville as I have been what my Canadian boss keeps referring to as a, “a keener”, lol.

And apparently I need to try Poonteen? Or however it’s spelled, lol.

I second the three Niagara courses listed as well. As for Poutine, I’m not sure about Oakville, but there’s some great places in Montreal if you ever get sent out there.

If you are heading to the Falls area, Hickory Sticks on the American side is a nice course. Not a big fan of the Abbey at rack rate, and the pace can be quite slow. If you have a full day to spend on golf, I would definitely go to Osprey, however it would take over an hour from Oakville.

If you are a member of a private course, get your Pro to make a call and you can probably get on a couple of the private tracks.

Didn’t think of that. If you’re looking for private, Burlington Golf & Country Club is an excellent and scenic Stanley Thompson design right on Lake Ontario. Another gem is Mississauga G&CC, where I played a bit as a junior. So many great private tracks around Oakville, just none in Oakville proper.

OP

Don't buy poutine at any of the large fast food chains that don't specialize serving it....it will be garbage...so don't waste your money.

Few places make really good poutine....do a Google search 1st....and read the reviews.

If you're looking for private, Burlington Golf & Country Club.....Another gem is Mississauga G&CC,

Although I've never played them...excellent courses recommendations above.

But if he's able...why not go all out if he can get his head pro if he's able....and spend the extra drive to get onto St. Georges or Hamilton G&CC.

I assume Mississauga has the room and infrastructure...though the membership likely won't want to host.

I think Golf Canada should try to get the Cdn Women's Open to Mississauga one day....though St. Georges would be better venue....decades ago the LPGA did play there.

Except for holes 11-14...I don't think much of Glen Abbey...as another said....not good value at rack rate.

Agreed on that, although I was trying to keep him close to “home” so to speak. Played both, and St. George’s is probably one of the best courses I’ve played in my life.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish I could say I was a member at a private club but I am not. I’ll likely be playing the public/semi-private courses I can get on at Saturday and Sunday. I am bummed to see the medium chance of rain although I am gonna take my clubs with me anyway. Let’s hope for the best!

As it stands I probably won’t be heading to the Niagra area afterall but maybe the Toronto area.
