3 hybrid and 56* wedge

A couple of posts like this.....may i ask why you'd use a 56 wedge? How come not a 9 iron or something that gives you more versatility?

If you hit a 56 wedge 100yds for example, that means EVERY shot longer than that you are using a 3 hybrid. Kind of awkward for like, 140yd shots isn't it?

Serious question.

As mentioned i've done this a ton, and always found using a wedge was too one dimensional, at least for me

I play a tournament like this at least once a year. Usually putter is mandatory because the club doesn’t want us taking divots on the greens. I do best with a driver and a short iron.

Why in the world would you piss money away to play on a course with 2 clubs?

If you’re worried about the money you spent to be there then you probably shouldn’t be there.

I like the driver/8i strategy.... never considered driver but I can see how this might be a good way to go.

Unless you are really confident with driver off the deck, I think you are better off with a 3 wood. Par 5's will be difficult with a driver/8i setup I would think

My high school golf coach used to make us do this once a year. Back then, I used a 2 iron and a 7 iron. I think now I'd probably go 5 wood or 3 hybrid and 7 iron. Just putt with the bottom of the 7 iron.

I thought about 3w but I'm most likely not getting there in 2 anyway so 3w/3w does me no good.... driver/8i layup would be close to the same for me. I'm more confident with driver off the tee than 3w lately... either way sounds like fun, though!

4h and 8i - I can get on all par 4s in 3 at worst, and have enough versatility in the 8i to hood one or open the face. I putt like rubbish anyway, so either an 8i or hybrid won;t cost me more than 2-4 shots a round

I would probably go 5iron & 9 iron. The 5 can be de-lofted to get a bit more length and roll out of it. 9 iron for all chipping and putting. I prefer the lofted belly wedge to putting with a long iron.

3w 8 iron is optimal strategy. Strokes gained off the tee is incredibly important. Distance between 4 iron and 3 wood is 40-50 yards. That could mean 200 yards Vs 150 yards for approach shots. Most likely every par 4 is reachable with that.

Driver-8 iron isn’t optimal just because it’s worthless off the deck. Also it might get too close to greens so the 8 iron wouldn’t get enough spin.

The replies in this thread are interesting. A lot of people saying they score the same with way fewer clubs. I believe it for sure. With fewer clubs, you have to play golf and not golf swing. You have to think about how the ball is going to fly.

With 14 clubs, you have "gapping", so you think "if I do everything mechanically perfectly, this 9 iron will fly 144 yards, my "Stock" distance, and that will be good" - which is, of course, an awful mindset to have when trying to be good at golf.

So just think how good it might go if you played with 14 clubs but *thought* like you were playing with 3?

I'm learning that more and more. Some folks wouldn't ever try different shots with a fourteen club bag. There's a lot to be said for a full bag, but somebody who's comfortable with less is going to have more flexibility either way. Ben Hogan was once asked why he wasn't carrying a seven iron and his reply was that there wasn't a seven iron shot on the course.

With 10 yard gapping, a golfer would only have his stock distance one out of 10 times.

Exactly. So why do so many rehearse their swings with their head down, paying no attention to the target, as if hitting everything on some mechanics checklist produces proximity?
