USGA US Open Qualifying

Recommended Posts

First off, good luck to everyone who is playing in qualifying. Entries closed yesterday, and I received my players information for my qualifier today.

This will be my first attempt at Local Qualifying. I played in high school, then decided that life was more important and took a solid 10 years off competitive golf. I got hooked again last year and after playing in tournaments this year and last, I decided to take the plunge. I'm nervous and excited all at once, and just hope that I don't completely fall apart.

To those of you who have done LQ before, is there anything special I should be doing to prepare? I've already played one practice round at my site course and will be playing a second. The course made up legit yardage books with green slope sheets and everything, so I think I'm pretty well prepared there. Aside from just practicing, should I do anything extra? I'm going to be ramping up cardio over the next couple weeks to prepare for the walk, have my caddie lined up, etc.

I've never played in anything higher than a local/regional Am tour event. I'm trying to avoid being overwhelmed. Any advice from vets is greatly appreciated.

Also, FWIW, my expectation is that I won't make it out of LQ. I'm setting a goal score of 73. If I beat that, great. If not, well, better luck next year. But I'm fully expecting that I'll need to shoot in the 60s to make it through and I'm not confident in my ability to do that simply because I'm inconsistent at times due to having a normal 9-5 job and not playing/practicing as much as I'd like.

Again, best of luck to everyone playing in LQs over the next few weeks, and TIA for any advice.

Be patient, play for pars on everything but 5s, realize it's just another round of golf. Play within yourself, enjoy yourself.

I didn't sign up this year bc my game isn't quite where I'd want it to be to spend $200 for a round of golf with limited chance on going forward.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Not to get too new age here but you have you considered some meditation or yoga? Imo mental prep is equally as important as the physical . Both these practices can help with anxiety, help you sleep better and relieve stress. Learning to control your breath really helps with focus and keep tension out of your swing, at least it has for me. I'm glad I started both, they've been beneficial not just on the course but for my overall health. Play well and best of luck!!

Have fun, enjoy the good breaks and don’t get frustrated. Also, grind out everything. Some of these locals will end up higher than you think so don’t ever give up no matter what!

Spartan-

Nothing quite like that opening shot...

"Now...on the tee... from (your golf club), YOU!"

Make absolutely sure the 14 golf clubs you use are in conformance with USGA rules...specifically wedges.

Your priorities are in order. Enjoy the day.

Remember...Ben Hogan called it, "...the crucible of competition."

Good Luck.

Lot of good stuff in here, guys. I appreciate it!

Re: Equipment: I've gone through and looked at the conforming list and I am comfortable saying I'm good there. That's a great piece of advice, though, as some may slip through the cracks. Most of my clubs are new within the last 2 years so I'm totally comfortable with those, but I have a 2 iron that is maybe 20 or so years old that I just can't get rid of that I had to search a couple times for. I'll double check it again before the tourney.

Yoga/meditation: Haven't done it, but a lot of people I know have suggested yoga. Maybe I'll look into starting that this year.

Looking forward to getting off the first tee. Once that happens, I'll be fine. That first shot is going to be the most nerve-wracking for me.

I think the USGA qualifiers are pretty well ran. nothing special though

go out have fun, its always fun when you get paired with a name that's pretty popular in your area.

Im kind of old school but I think the one ball rule is in effect... unless that went away in the last 5-6 years lol
