Newer model replacement for R7 tp’s...?

Recommended Posts

I’m looking for a newer model (conforming grooves) with the same profile and, in particular, launch angle.

I am able to get decent height from these that I haven’t been able to achieve from the PSI tours.

The R7’s also had a little wider sole, with what looks like, some weight low and back, which I think helps the launch conditions.

Any ideas?

My only concern is the blade length. I like the sole width and length of the R7 tp’s. I have some epic pro’s, but they couldn’t knock them outta the bag.

I played the tp’s before and now play Callaway apex 16’s. I think that they are comparable in terms of look.

Never considered them, I’ll give them a look.

Thanks

I switched from r7tp to Ping i20 a number of years ago, then eventually iE1. I feel like my iron play improved even though I play less golf now. I would recommend something from the Ping i line.

I played the R7 TPs way back when as well. The closest that would currently be on the market is the Taylormade P790 or Titleist AP2. The blade length/offset should be similar, the only kicker is the P790 will have stronger lofts.

Sorry for me going off topic but I noticed on Gettyimages that Kenny Perry won last year's US Senior's Open with non-TP R7s. How he got a set of irons that old to have conforming grooves to win is beyond me.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

I hate to get hung up on the groove rule, but I’m trending towards playing tournament golf again and want to have irons that I have the confidence in like the R7’s. I have about 20 sets of irons and none can bump them out. I have some ie1 heads I am going to shaft up, maybe tonight, and see where that leads.

Prior to the TM’s, I played I/3 Blades that were bag staples for a long time and before that 962b’s.

Originally looked at the Mizuno 900 tours with Project x 6.5, as that’s what the shaft optimizer and mizuno fitting suggested.
