Have you seen the PGA tour lately? Other than a few notable exceptions, its not like there are a bunch of 6'2 220 lb guys walking around... World #1 is LISTED at 5'10 145. Do you think he is actually 5'10??

Everyone seems to be trending skinnier. Spieth looks like a rail, JT looks like a rail, Adam Scott and Jason day have thinned down.

What's the deal? Is it a speed thing?

Maybe to maximize on trackman they have found you need to be skinnier. But Aaron wise is a pretty muscular guy and he just blew the skinny guys away. In Dallas. Leishman also is kinda a bigger fellow and he ca,e in second. Somehow I don't think being skinny with no muscle is the answer.

Agree 100%, I was just making the point that size is not THE deciding factor in golf (or for any speed driven sport). In baseball, many coaches went for the long lanky pitchers because of "potential velocity" but we see how that is not a steadfast predictor anymore. The other point, and most former athletes will agree, that whats listed in the bio as height is not always "scientifically accurate".

I watched two episodes of Drivel, hoping to see specifics of the practice regimens and training they go through, or maybe a profile of a typical day for one of these student athletes.

What I did get was how to play video games, how to board a jet (private), how to wheel my suitcase into a hotel and how to lie around on a couch and play video games and eat stuff. And also how to listen/not listen when the coach says they have to play better.

Drivel could have been much better than it is.

I think it's fantastic- Only problem being that it's not long enough, which could be solved by getting more in depth with some of the stuff you mentioned so yeah I agree a little.

The show is good, but it could be longer, agreed. On some of the other topics, many coaches pof state the rules beforehand on how qualifying will work. And each tourney can be different. For example, top 4 scores qualify automatically, 5th pick is “coaches decision”. Could be top3, two picks etc. This is based on outlying factors (tournament course, grades, effort, attitude, team consitency, players history at a certain track or grass type and in some cases can be “off the field” issues).

Also a byproduct (good & bad) of a good program is the great programs have a stable of good horses, all can play great at any given moment, but you only get to choose 5, sometimes 6 based on format...great players get left at home all the time.

In the case of say “OSU/Karsten Creek” there are a lot of good collegiate players that simply can’t shoot good scores consistently on a course like that, but when they rotate in other local courses (SCC, Oak Tree, Southern Hills) it changes...it’s more of an aggregate during qualifying.

My 8 yo recently attended a top tier D1 programs camp. Coach was talking recruiting and how they look at how tall the kids parents are when recruiting them. Seemed ridiculous, but must be a common philosophy among coaches. My first thought....I should wear boots next year.

This is true. More so in females than males, but definitely true with both sexes. Had a coach tell me that they looked for girls 5’6” and taller. However, there is always an exception to the rule.

I have no doubt they would look for tall players, but interestingly the #1 and #2 women's golf teams have only one player each taller than 5'6":

I've been trying to DVR the last episode and its recording girls college golf instead. :(

Set it to record during the overnight hours. My 10 yo figured that out for me

That didn't work either.

they played college golf instead of the program that day, it was ncaa womens golf that went into overtime because of a tie

I can confirm that this is mostly true... buddy of mine used to write for reality shows and now directs them. That being said, with Driven I feel like the 'cast' is playing up to the public's perception of college golf. To me, it's starting to feel like a prolonged recruiting video. (But I'm going to keep watching!)

Agree with both observations.

After watching the NCAA's, I'll try to watch this show (I'm sure the Golf Channel will replay it a gazillion times). Hope there is some good content.

Re: Stratton...I also wondered what happened to him, but I agree with those above that it is all about the scores. This kid was a stud in the NCAA lacrosse finals for Yale (champs this year over Duke)....he might actually need to look up at Stratton. I dare say that physicality is more important in lacrosse than golf.

I'm not talking about this year, you realize the comments from stattons dad thread are from spring 2016... You know the year he had the lowest average on the entire team, lol

http://okstate.com/d...ats.pdf?id=9279

You guys are right, stats don't like.

He probably lost heart and gave up...

2016-2017 he had the worst average on the team. How is that losing heart? Numbers don't lie. Had nothing to do with height.

Now that he has graduated, I can speak a little more freely about the situation there and not feel like it will further ostracise Stratton. I (as well as all the players there) wish that it were as simple as "numbers don't lie" and "qualifying" LOL They really only legitimately qualified when they got there at the first of the year. After the first event, most if all played well and they won so they don't qualify for much or at all after that happens. Mentally it is brutal for your teammates to be traveling and playing in California, Hawaii and you are recording scores in the winter in Stillwater on Karsten Creek in brutal conditions more times than not. On some days there in the winter, a 76 is a phenomenal score given the conditions, but on the scorecard, it is a 76 and comparing that to a 72 or 73 in Cali is a tough pill to swallow. The times this season that they announced that they would be "qualifying for one or a couple of times two spots" the caveat was that those spots were still going to be "PICKS" What does that mean? It means, if the person the coach wants to play has a qualifying score, they go by scores, if not, it will be justified why the person with the higher score will still go. This was maddening to the players. I take nothing away from the players who were playing as they performed great and took full advantage of their opportunity, but even at the end here prior to the championship, there was a person in the starting lineup that was beaten constantly in qualifying by some other team members and it wasnt even that close. Stratton was on the bad end too many times over the past years of earning him spot on the team by qualifying and then at the last minute being told he would be played as an individual. At one point, he had won two qualifying sessions in a row. (3 & 4 round sessions) Following the first, he was told if he did it again, he would travel. He won the next and was put on the travel squad. They get to the venue and the day prior to the event starting the coach walked up to Stratton on his practice round and told him that he was going to play him as an individual. Stratton could give two craps about playing as an individual. He played as an individual, finished 4th overall in the event and the team finished 2nd. Had he played, they would have won going away. This season started off with him playing horrible on one day of the initial qualifying and it knocked him out of most of the first of the year since they barely ever "qualified" This entire season, I have never seen him so dejected as he felt no matter, he was not going to get playing time. I am hoping that it is now going to light a fire back in him that was gone this season. He is living in Edmund on the first hole of Oak Tree National with Willie and Hayden Wood and this is the best thing for him. I watched him play his last round on KC week before last and he was READY to move on and now he has mentally. He teed it up in the US Open qualifier shooting 69 and moving on the the US Open Sectional this Monday. I talked for the last two years to people who back channel contacted me to see if he would be interested in a transfer. Both were top D1 programs with recent championships and I am still on the fence as to if we made the right decision. Stratton loves his teammates, loves oSu and loves everything about being a Cowboy. In the end, he decided to sacrifice his playing time instead of burning bridges and leave the team for his own selfish reasons. Coach Darr and Coach Bratton did an outstanding job getting this team to perform and bring another championship back to oSu and for that, they need to be commended, but imho if Coach Bratton doesnt change the way he sets and determines the lineup during the season, he is going to lose a lot of players. At the very least, all the players want is to have clear cut rules on what constitutes the team and starters and not a "who is gonna get screwed this week" atmosphere at the team meetings that they have now. The teams 11th player who never got a single chance to travel transferred after the first semester this season. He started every single event for the D1 program he transferred to and finished 52nd individually at the National Championship. This team could have easily started TWO complete 5 player teams that could challenge and beat anyone. Of the players not starting, all but 1 have won a collegiate event and that player had two second place finishes as well as being last year's US Amateur Medalist and scoring record holder for the Am. Their depth was like no team that I have ever seen. When you have 10 players who ALL are this talented, I would think you should just qualify them every week and go by that. Bratton DID that his first season there. In the end, all of the McGraw recruits were outside the ropes this year but hey, the team won the natty so it will mask some of the true behind the scenes drama that did and is going on. Everyone may be shocked come next season.

Lots of dynamics going on with coaching a golf team at that level, guys. Not everything is about what is on paper. Kid could have been late to practices, in danger of failing academics, being confrontational with other players and staff, not listening to the coach, etc. Not saying any of that is true, but there are always circumstances that aren't public. Could be it is easier to tell dad some lame reason than be accountable for something tangible. Gotta give professional people the benefit of the doubt when things look too stupid to be believable.

Stratton has always had 4.0 gpa's and on honors. He was obsessed with OSU golf, he wasn't being late or rude to coach. It's a pretty simple conclusion really, power and speed is very important in competitive golf

Not doubting, but how are you able to confirm all that?

I will confirm, Stratton graduated with TWO degrees, Finance and Accounting. He made the Presidents list 3 times (4.0) and Deans list 4 times. He won the team Directors Chair having the highest GPA in class/sport. He never missed a practice or was late for ANYTHING. He doesn't drink hardly at all and was known as the teammate who would pick up his teammates at 2am or be the DD when they would go out. He has been named the oSu golf camp's assistant of the week more than a few times and he is the ONLY player on the team that has worked the camp every year start to finish and will again this summer.

This comment makes it sound like he made himself a little too accessible or maybe a pushover. I really have no basis to comment but that's what I'm reading into it.

Regardless, he should be proud of himself for graduating with two degrees and for holding himself to the highest of standards. It is difficult to stand for what you believe is the right thing to do when others don't agree with you.

"Pushover" LOL or a really good friend and teammate

Jason admitted he’s lost a good bit of weight in interviews.

You could make the muscle to fat argument but anyhow they were talking about how he wins after losing weight and how odd that is. And also that he lost 10 pounds in a short amount of time.

You should have ended that before adding the parenthetical statement. There's no reason to compare either of these two golfers.

Uh, this is a thread about Oklahoma State golf, and there were two members of the team that finished near each other near the qualifying figure. You read too much into it.

You don't give a compliment by saying one did better than the other.

Thanks for the guidance. Even though "doing better" in a qualifier is an irrelevant concept when you don't qualify, I should have written:

Nice try by Stratton today, finishing a few strokes out of Sectional qualifying. In other unrelated Oklahoma State golf news, teammate Matthew Wolff was coincidently playing in the same qualifier, and unfortunately also didn't qualify, though it was a nice try by him also.

LOL, they all pull for each other. Stratton, Matt and Viktor were all hanging out for 30min on the range talking after the 36 holes yesterday. Stratton will tell anyone that Matt has "it" to him. They all laughed watching the GC coverage and swing speeds of Matt. They were definately exaggerated in the programming on Golf Channel. Matt is long, but not the longest even on his team. They will all say about Matt is his positioning and swing on his downswing and I listened to them talking about it in the clubhouse yesterday with some other collegiate players. His positions are perfect on the downswing and he repeats it. He launches the ball so high, he gets every yard out of his swing speed. They know what Matt's real speeds are and though Matt is strong and fast, his CHS is no where near Dustin Johnson and the longest players on tour like they were making it out on in the coverage. There were two players on this team that were longer. This whole group has a special bond with each other it shows in events like yesterday where they are competing as individuals. I will say this, there may be some trouble next season for oSu in numbers of players. The talk I heard yesterday was eye-popping.

There were four oSu players in the sectional:

Stratton Nolen - 72/62 -137 -7

Brendon Jelley- 68/69 - 137 -7

Matthew Wolff- 71/67 - 138 -6

Viktor Hovland - 76/WD

I had a feeling that after oSu won the NCAA title that there would be at least one or two of the underclassmen that decided to go pro. In my opinion the caliber of kids playing at oSu already have this on their mind and since they have won their championship the next logical step is to go make some coin.

It really is good to hear that they are out there rooting for each other.

The problem is that they have NO ROOM for any underclassmen to leave. They had 11 players that started the year, 1 transferred to U of Ark after the first semester, 4 graduated. One more has already declared pro two weeks ago after winning the Monday Qualifier on the Web.com event. That leaves 4 with one recruit coming in. I know that 2 of those 5 are going to attend two q schools each in the fall. (Web.com and Euro) That would leave 3 and of those 3 I could see two of them turning pro this summer as their stock is pretty high right now.
