Which 22 degree Driving Iron? Need help

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I´m searching for a 4 Iron, or something around 22 degree as a driving Iron.

The Iblade 4 Iron is to hard to hit consistantly for me. I'm searching for an easy to launch Iron from the fairway to fill the Gap between 5 Iron ( 190 yards carry) and a 4 Wood ( 230 yards carry). So something for 200-210 yards carry.

Testing here in Germany is very difficult, so thats not an Option.

I tried or owned the following:

- Mizuno MP H5 21 degree bent 1 degree weak with C Taper Lite R Flex: Was very good, sold it for a 5 Wood, that was a mistake. I can't get another here in Germany.

- Ping G400 Crossover 22 degree with Alta stiff: Easy to hit, but need good timing to get good results. Was very long, but not consistent enough

- Srixon Zu65 18 degree with HZRDUS Black 6.0: Very nice feeling of the Head, but the Shaft was not for me, the Spin was to low and the Ball falls of the Air.

- Titleist T-MB: Not very forgiving for me.

- Mizuno MMC Fli Hi: Not as good as the old MP H5

- Callaway X Forged 21 degree with PX 6.0: The Shaft was to much for me.

So, I think you could see the Dilemma.

I´m leaning towards the Srixon Z U65 in 23 degree or the new Cobra King Utility with the Option to adjust the Loft.

What you think of the new Cobra King Utility in comparison with the Others?

Thanks a lot for your help Guys.

I use a Callaway Steelhead XR as a driving iron and i love it. I find it pretty easy to hit and with the right shaft would launch high

i game an older cally x utility prototype 24 deg to replace my 4. primarily for use off the tee including longer par 3s (not great the best from the deck). agree need to find the right shaft though. this season i am experimenting with a hybrid shaft cut down a bit.

I would consider a Wishon 590 DIH. Stock with a .335 bore and they make .335 hybrid specific shafts in several weight categories. They are easy to hit and easy to get up in the air. Diamond Gilf know owns Wishon and are based in Europe. They offer a 2/18*, 3/21*, and 4/24*.....and can be hanging selected +/- 1* for loft and lie; and/or bent +/- 2* for loft and lie. They can also bore to .370.

If you want something a little more chunky, then the U65 with a better shaft for you is my #1 advice for you. If you want something a bit thinner and compact, then P790 4i. I use the 4i in my set and it's really easy to hit. I've never been able to hit a 4i until now.

... Having played more than 10 DI's, I think the King Utility is a special club. For me at least, the Rogue Black 85hy is the perfect hybrid shaft so that plays into it, but the head is just so forgiving but very accurate and I love the adjustability. I do have the P790 4 iron in my bag and absolutely love it, but at 21* it is really a 3 iron. And I have added the P790 3 iron to my bag to see if it can beat out my King Utility, which is a very tall order. Although sooner or later I will try the Exotics CBX Iron Wood in the 17* or 19* model as I was very impressed with it at the PGA Show.
