Stuck on PING s55's

Recommended Posts

Boys, bought to jump on this S55 train. Partly because I want some more forgiving irons than my Srixon Z-Forged, partly because I like Ping and my NH set of clubs are G30s, and I am just wanting a change for 2021. Scored some blue dots in mint condition for $225 and they're an inch long but I can get them cut pretty easily. I might do it myself to save a few bucks and am looking for the next grip that I want to install for the year.

Question is, boys, what swing weight are you guys working with? I know a lighter grip will give me maybe a half swingweight (standard loft, lie (blue dot), and length). I'm not an enemy to using lead tape but it most definitely isn't my favorite thing to see on irons.

Anyways, glad to be part of the club. Looking forward to 2021. Hit em straight.

I'm not sure how much more forgiving you'll find them than the Z - Forged...

They're not true blades by any stretch of the imagination, but they have a thin top line to my eye and will punish off center hits (especially toward the toe).

With that said, I still think you should carry out your plan. $225 mint condition? That's an absolute steal for irons I just can't convince myself to get rid of. I'm looking right now for something new but, in all reality, I could easily see myself just doing another year with them... again lol.

Best irons I've hit. Control and shaping is good, feel is good and they're really forgiving. For me even the ballspeeds are good. As a bonus, these are almost indestructible.

Was lucky enough to get new heads for my short ones (8-PW) from Ping just a couple of months ago. Have been playing the same set (!!!) since 2014 and 4i-7i condition is still good. The amount of balls I've hit with these is insane, for a recreational player these things will last a lifetime. If I was playing forged, I would be burning through at least a set every year

I bought my S55's used in great condition on this site 2.5 years ago and they are the best irons I've ever owned.  Just good at everything.  I just bought some New Level PF-2's with the exact same specs, so I can preserve my Ping's for as long as possible.  Man what a great set of irons.

I always get excited for new irons, but I'm almost just as excited to put the old trusty's back in the bag when my game goes haywire.  It's an instant fix for some reason.  I get my old "feels" back and my game just seems to heal.  Kinda dramatic, but it's what happens!

I’m putting recoil 110’s in mine in 7 weeks to match my gen 1 Glides in 50 54 and 60

Unlike a poster above, I find them super forgiving off the toe .. slight thin and slight toe in my miss and that miss is awful with hollow irons like 790 and t-mb etc

Took some time to get through the 10 pages and can't wait to try out the used set of s55's (4-pw) I recently bought paired w/ modus 130x.  Spring can't come soon enough!

Never owned ping irons, but always wanted to try.  I've been a mizzy player since titleist 762's.  Played mp-30's, 64's and currently play a mixed set; mp-18sc 9,8,7, mp-18mmc 6,5 irons w/Oban ct-115 (recommended by club champion 3 years ago).  I'm hoping the s55's bring some magic not only with upping GIR's, but proximity to hole.

I used to only play s300's before the Oban's so I think I can manage the weight of the 130's.   After getting in some range sessions and play, I'll have to decide on swapping shafts and possibly hard stepping the oban's into the s55's (and soft stepping the modus into the mizzy's or look at picking up an alternate shaft - definitely keeping the obans!).  Looking forward to the season (and hitting 4irons again lol)!  I have a feeling I'll game the s55's all season and mizzy's will be the back-up set...

I left the Mizuno MP series (33 and 37 the fav’s) to go into the Ping S series (every single version and iblades)... and then barely left s55 for 919T

I, unfortunately, passed on these. I sold my Z-Forged and actually grabbed a set of Eye2s from my old roommate who wanted to offload and clean out his place for a stupid price. Changed out some grips, and validated the lengths (all were 1" long) back to stock.

The Eye2s are my 2021 experiment and though they're ugly, offset, old, beat up, ferrule-less, dinged, faded, and just oldschool, they perform. Game improvement clubs like these just work and are bulletproof.

It’s been a couple years since I’ve gamed s55’s, and I’m definitely more than happy with my T100’s but I still remember the feel from those s55’s. Man those were great sticks. I don’t have a need for a backup set by any means, but if was going to get a back up set it would have s55’s.

Gone but not forgotten.

Sad day in the Yuck household. S55’s are sold.  They have been like a member of the family for years.  Probably my favorite set of irons since my blade days.  They were replaced with Apex TCBs.  Very similar size and forgiveness level.  Better feeling and the sole shape is agreeing with me.  Went with same shafts and lofts, so transition is seamless.  The TCB’s have big shoes to fill to live up to the S55’s.

I'm still playing my S59s! Love them, though I think I am at an age ( approaching Geezerhood 🙂 ) now and game improvement clubs might be a better fit for me. They are forgiving for player clubs and I still hit them pretty well.

Mine have been relegated to backup duty. I'm thinking of sending them to Ping to be refinished and reshafted. I don't think I'll ever sell them.

Can PING refinish the S55's?

I had read that they would not...  I am hoping I read some misinformation...  I have a set of like new S55's but was looking for a back up set before I got a set of i210's...

I do not think Ping refinishes the S55.  I am 99% sure but if by chance I am wrong, I will be very happy since mine are beat to shyt.

I'm still playing mine from 2015. The only change I've made is I did switch the 4 and 5 irons out for I210's for a little more forgiveness. A new set of irons is expensive for me so I think I want to play these until the upgrade is significantly better.  When y'all switch what are y'all switching for? Are you getting better performance with newer irons or just better feel, looks, etc?

I completely understand why half a dozen pros including Bubba, Mackenzie Hughes, Carlos Ortiz and Austin Cook are still playing these irons.

I have a set in good shape that I reshafted with Obans and some fun ferrules. Sent them into PING to have the lofts strengthened a degree (as much for the bounce as the distance). Also to make the swing weights exactly what they should've been and give them some colorful paint. The specs are now absolutely dead on, and it's nice knowing I'll never have to do it again. As has been said, these heads are indestructible (and you have to love steel that has a memory). I only wish they'd made them without the chrome because they'd look good even longer. If I knew how to take out the inserts, I'd probably have them stripped. New project for this winter.

8i for the ages:

irons formerly known as Prince.jpg

that's a good lookin' club

My 55's are paired with project x LZ's but I do have some oban ct 115s to swap....might have to try that combo!

Where did you find those ferrules?  Ping have these strange ferrules that sit below hosel...

S59, 58,57, 56, 55 are sensational playing irons for all skill levels, from beginner to Tour pro. Ping should continue this series.
