Stuck on PING s55's

I had the first gen 0311T with steelfiber 110 and I much preferred the S55/nippon modus 120 combo I had for a bit. I am starting to regret selling the S55s, I really enjoyed those. It's been tough to beat the 745s for me, but the S55 were very close.

Is Bubba still playing the S55? The i200/210 have my eye (along w 18sc, 745/65, p770), but I've never ventured away from Mizuno. I want a players cavity back but don't want to spend a lot (in fear I might dislike anything not Mizuno) and the S55's have my eye.

As of his last win he sure was, with an iBlade 2I.

I played the i210s this weekend and liked them quite a bit. I bought my set used and don't like the shafts, so instead of going through the PITA of buying/reshafting, I'm returning them and will likely buy a new set of properly specced up i210s for Xmas.

Use them some and save some of the wear and tear of the S55s. On first blush, the S55s are definitely better feeling, but maybe I just wasn't middling the i210s enough.

Was at my local store today and they had a set of S55, PX 5.5, I have been looking at... Right next to them was a set of i200s with the AWT 2.0. I have a set of these on the way and have been also really missing the set of 55s I sold a while ago, just thought I'd hit these two against each other. I have to say, I was kind of surprised with the results, maybe it came down to shaft but the S55 were actually better in almost every way for me. Dispersion was great and distance was actually better by a couple yards even though spin numbers could be a little higher on average. I really expected the i200 to blow the S55 out in every category but it wasn't the case.... I was able to hunt down the set I sold and bought them back..LOL I will still give the i200 a shot, things are always different outdoors, but indoors on the monitor the S55 were really impressive. S55 wins on feel, too. Really looking forward to getting my hands on these again.

This does not necessarily surprise me. S55 is a shorter blade but has a center of gravity much lower than the i200, which can get away with the higher COG and still launch high due to the flexing face. But the S55 with its lower COG could feel a lot better and actually be easier to achieve a purer strike.

Still very much looking forward to getting those i200s out though... when pured they were really nice, too, and the little bit larger footprint is more confidence inspiring. The i200 look great, I am betting power spec'd and outdoors things could be very different. Cheers, man!

The i200’s hit great. I find them really long. And what I like is you can really hit down on them and the ball takes off on a nice trajectory. The fitter I go to has been with Ping for decades. He believes the i200/i210 series is the best iron Ping has made.

I just picked up another set of these on whim and in an effort to recapture my form from a couple of years ago. When I sat them down at address it was like something I'd been missing suddenly was found. I forgot how absolutely perfect these are address. I can't find a single fault. We actually have reasonable weather here in PA tomorrow as well, so I may even get a chance to get out and give them a hit. Very much looking forward to it.

Still rock in' my S55 irons. I waited to try the iBlades before I ordered directly from Ping. Don't regret one bit. Best irons I've ever played.

So I took the plunge and picked up a super clean set of S55’s. I also purchased a new set of Matrix Program F15’s for the build. After they are totally complete I plan on sending them back to ping to touch up the swing weighs if necessary and have them refinished. End result, I’m hoping for a brand new set of “modern” S55’s!! Can’t wait...BB

I am hoping the next iteration morphs the iBlades with the S55.

What would that get you? What would bring from each?

I like the sole grind of the iBlade and the cavity design, with the weight pad, of the S55.

Gotcha.....never had nor hit s55 but absolutely LOVE my iblades! can't see much improvement in any facet.

Since I’m doing a huge graphite shafted S55 build literally back to brand new it’s appropriate to ask do you think these are still relevant??

Truly great irons do not become irrelevant in a few years.

I mean, your signature says you’re playing Cobra CB’s. Other than a little creatively placed tungsten those irons could easily be 20 years old. A players cavity back is a players cavity back. They change very little over the years.

S55’s will be completely relevant and playable for decades.

Finish on my s55 did start peeling was my only complaint, otherwise they were awesome irons and I played them for a few years. Also sometimes take them on trips.

Replaced them with 0311t and now I do prefer those but could go back to the s55 no problem; just gave up a bit of distance with the s55 but lofts may be different.

I haven purchased several sets in the past five years, including ap2, gen2 0311t, i25 etc and the s55 worked way better than all except the Gen 1 0311t. They are great irons.

I have owned 2 sets and loved the look of them.....but....I play overlength and swingweight on both sets was way too high. They were super forgiving for a players iron. I have owned blades before and these are on another level forgiveness wise. I would have no reservations playing these and I would never play blades. Feel wasn't Mizuno level but had a very nice crisp and powerful pop off the head that I could have gotten used to.

I’ve always had these on my bucket list and I finally decided to patiently search out a very clean set. Once my build is complete Ping spa day. Brand new set of Matrix Program F15’s and I want to experiment with a set of Winn Lites. At this grip weight I will offset any need for head weight with a set of tungsten rubber tip weights if I indeed need any at all. The Programs F15’s where designed to maintain swing weights, we shall see. The only other set that really intrigues me would be the PXG Gen 1 0311t’s but the price is prohibitive since I already have my 19’ gamers bagged. These will be my winter/backup set just in case my Cobra CB’s don’t behave. My Cobra’s are shafted with matte back C Taper Lites which are awesome but at the tender age of 50 steel just makes me cringe in cold weather. Here lies the benefit of this build!

The s55 with steelfibers went out of play for a month (steelhead xr pro's during a Florida vacay) but are back in the bag >>>> now with Fujikura MCI 100s shafts

Oh baby these are sweet

I have said it before, but I am going to dump 3 or 4 of my extra 7 iron sets and grab another set of s55's. I can't cheat on them anymore. I will keep the grandparents around (Zing 2 and Rapture OG's)

Sorry to hear it. I lost mine a year ago.

Finding clubs that work is a good thing. Everyone likes trying new clubs but Ive found that it can be like fools gold.

I've had the same hybrid and 3w for at least 8 years, and the feeling of confidence i get when i pull them out of the bag isn't easy to replace.

Thanks for the kind words. My mom passed mid May last year. Only 74. Awful, acute leukemia. I struggled hard right until October.

I hear you on sticking with what you like. I had a rapture J-spec 7 iron arrive today ( I love the bay). I will be finding some Ping 8-PW clubs to throw at the back end of my 3-7 in J-spec
