Titleist shaft insertion question?

how far to insert a shaft so it plays true to flex?

hey folks, the title and description are pretty self explanatory, but if i'm putting a v2 86x into a 907d2 head, how far should it be inserted to play true to the stated flex? My understanding is that the bore thru of a titleist driver causes shafts to play stiffer than stated. i'd like for my v2 86x to play as close to a typical x as possible, my ss is 115 to 120, but i'm concerned that the v2 86x will play to stiff if it's inserted too far. any ideas? i'll be playing this combo at 45" thanks in advance folks.

Most shafts are designed for a bottom of bore to ground of between 1" and 1 1/2". When you have a bottom of bore to ground of 0 - the shaft will play as if it were tipped between 1" and 1 1/2" when you insert it fully in the bore.

 

You can make up for this by installing a softer shaft fully in the bore, or installing the stiffer shaft to a location that mimics the "standard" bore.

if i understand this correctly then, in order for the shaft to play at it's stated flex or as though it had not been tipped, it should be inserted at 1 to 1.5 inches?

 

can anyone confirm or correct my thoughts on this (or just comment further)? I'd appreciate as much feedback on this as possible as this will be my first Titleist driver and i don't fully understand all the effects of a bore thru design.

I just installed a Diamana Whiteboard 73s in a 907 d2. Install info from Mitsubishi said 1-1/2" for true to flex and 2" for stiffer play. I installed the Diamana at 1-1/2", 44-3/4" playing length and when I checked it, the frequency was 255. Hope this helps

Read what I said again.

 

The distance you care about is the bottom of the shaft to the ground, not the distance it's inserted into the head.

 

A bore through head has a bottom of bore to ground of 0.

 

A standard bore has a bottom of bore to ground of 1-1/2"

 

If the shaft is designed for a standard bore - and most are - you want to insert it into the bore through head far enough to mimic the design of the standard bore, so stop 1-1/2" from the ground.

 

Note that this will change the playing characteristics of the head. The head is designed for a shaft to be inserted all the way, so the feel of the club will be different - though most people probably will not notice.

 

The way that Titleist gets around this with their stock shaft is by having a shaft designed for a through bore - or by using a shaft that's 1 flex softer and inserting it fully into the bore.

Many people, myself included, use a 1-1/4" or so shaft tip in the very bottom of the bore (angled to replicate the bottom of the Titleist head. With this method you can install the shaft without worry of placement in the head. The piece of shaft already installed serves as a stop.

If you look around at trimming instruction and shafts you will see that some shafts, mainly True Temper and Graffaloy, have trimming instructions that call for standard bore, blind bore and through bore. In that case you have the option of trimming or not (if you have the resources to angle the shaft tip)

Some people will cut the old shaft flush with the hosel and drill out the old shaft until they are left with 1-1/4" or so left in the bore. That method works fine also, especially if you do not have the resources to angle and fill the shaft tip.

if i do a custom order from Titleist, a 907d2 9.5* w/ v2 86x, will they do a full bore insertion or do i need to specify how deep when i place my order?

Would depend on whether or not titleist are using shafts purpose built for them with placebo tips or not. You'd probably have to call and ask. Titleist won't do blindbores nor will they tip shafts.

If you get the combo via Titleist, you will have a manufacturer's warrantee on the club. If you get a head and do a reshaft, you will probably void any warrantee.

Hi, I am newbie here and was searching for d2 reshafting info which brought me here.

 

And after reading this thread I think I did a mistake when I shafted my 9.5 D2 with a Diamana red board 73 S (not oem Titleist), inserted 2 inch from the top as I thought the info on Diamana website meant 2 inch from the top?? Anyway, my D2 played so badly during my outing with it, high balloning with flight tendancy of right fade (I am right hander), and sometimes low hook. In another word, the D2 now just doesnt feel right.

 

So I am planning to pull it out and reinstall 1.25" measure from the bottom sole as per recomendation here. Will there be a problem in re installing a pulled shaft and what should I expect or am I doing the right thing?

 

And advice or more information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I thought that if you get a 4" tip section that it would still play true to flex in a Titleist bore-through?

That is a generalization. If the shaft has a 4" parallel tip you can fully install it in a bore through head. It it is designed to be untipped in a standard bore it will play stiffer with the short BBGM. That may be what one is trying to acheive. Many GD, TT and Grafalloy shafts have tipping instructions of 1" to 1-1/4" for a standard bore. These will play "true to flex" in a Titleist head.

And after some research, here's some info that I would like to share. Titleist 907D2 head are designed as a bore thru, so one a need a 4" parallel tip shaft in order to achieved the desired effect.

 

As for my case I think I bought the 'wrong' diamana for my d2, apparently there is two model, each ending with 5ct and the 4gt, the latter is the correct one for full insertion to the bottom sole of the club to have the correct/true playing characteristic.

 

As mine is a 5ct and I naively installed it 2" from the hosel top, it played horrible. So is there any remedy to salvage this shaft? Should I try re-installing it 1.25" blind bore measure from the sole as mentioned here?
