Hats that can withstand a heavy sweater

Recommended Posts

I have gone through too many hats to count. After a few rounds and a lot of sweat they get crusty and shrink where they aren’t even comfortable to wear anymore. If I wash them they usually shrink enough where I can’t wear them anymore too. The only hat I’ve had success with is the older Titleist flex fit mesh back ones from around 5-6 years ago but since they changed the material those are the same for me now. Any suggestions on hats for a sweater?

Why not any one with performance material? None of those will shrink? Sounds like you like Titleist?

Titleist has a bunch of non cotton ones, but they don't make most of them big enough to fit my melon.

The polyester dri fit Nike ones get crusty and shrink. The Ping and new Titleist ones with their "performance fabrics" also get crusty. It's the same for any Nike mesh back ones. Visors are the best for me but with thinner hair and playing in the Florida sun the top of my head burns easily.

Wow, never heard of the poly ones shrinking, and I've soaked a few

I was gonna suggest exactly the nike ones, I've had few for at least a couple years now, and they look pretty darn new?

I was expecting a thread about wool vs cashmere sweaters lol

To the topic... my PING Tour Light hats hold up significantly better than my Titleist hats.

Surprised the poly hats give you issues. The best hats I have used in the South Florida heat is the vineyard vines performance hats. They even wash great in the washing machine and come out new.

American needle has great poly performance hats too that have a similar cut the to the vineyard vines hats. They are hard to find as they are usually custom order for pro shops at a lot of nicer courses. They make some of the Masters official hats too.

I've ruined my share of hats too and came across these disposable liners in my research for a hat that would hold up to my sweating in hot weather.

I can usually get 3 rounds in with 1 liner and they've worked great so far, no sweat has made its way to my hats. I was a bit worried that it may affect the fit or feel of the hat but I hardly notice its there.

Yep, those disposable "pantyliners for hats" work great. (cool)

I've worn Taylormade Tour Radar mesh hats since 2014 here in the Desert SW where I play most of my rounds in +100 degrees, full head of hair underneath.

They breath and fit my odd-shaped noggin good - that was my key. They are of the "unstructured" version, I hate high profile hats being a skinny fella. I always hand wash them post round with a few drops of laundry soap in the sink post round, hang to dry on my back porch. 5 colors in rotation.

There has been no shrinking or staining on any of them, although I keep the white one at home for cooler days below 85. These are adjustable straps with a buckle clasp.

Exactly. If he's ruining hats I would bet he's not washing them right. I sweat quite a bit in the heat and immediately after I get home I soak them in the sink in cold water with the woolite dark detergent. Hand wash after soaking for a bit, then rinse with cold water and hang them to dry. I have two year old hats that look almost brand new. Only buy performance material hats, as they shouldn't shrink and will retains their looks through many washes. I only wear Travis mathew lids.

Hand wash in the sink.

I usually do 3 or 4 at a time, into a bucket chuck in about half a cup of bi carb soda and a cup of white vinegar, you'll get a little reaction, add enough cold water to cover the hats, let soak for 3 or 4 days, drain, rinse with running water, place somewhere to drip dry for a couple of days, depending on where you live, I find this cleans them of sweat marks and any odours that might develop over time from sweat, then they're good to go again for a while. I mention odours because I've had a few hats that have got smelly from sweating, most haven't but I have 3 or 4 that seem too.

No joke, the imperial x210p I have sweated through 20 times and I just wash it with a wet cloth and it comes back looking new, very durable.

I was just going to say this. The Imperial Headwear Performance hat (which is the x210p) is the best hat for heavy sweaters on the market. I sweat like crazy. I basically can't wear a cotton hat without ruining it... even just walking around. I bought a hat at Forest Dunes back in 2015. It happened to be a Imperial performance hat (I just bought it because I liked it)... I have now played probably 100 rounds of golf in that hat. I just rinse it in the sink or shower every few good sweats and it's back to being new. I even wear this hat hiking, biking and even wear it to the gym for those early morning workout sessions.

I have since bought 3 more of these imperial hats because I like that one so much. All 3 are holding up just like that Forest Dunes hat. In fact, I just bought a white one (I haven't owned a white golf hat in probably a decade). I played 2 rounds in it this past weekend, one which I was dripping sweat in (it was 100*) and you can't even tell I wore it.

I also have a big head. These fit great. I can't sing their praises enough. It's a great product. You can buy custom ones on their website or find them in many proshops at courses everywhere,

I now have the one from FD, one from Kiawah, and 2 with the state of Arizona as the logo on the front.

I use this on all my hats, spray it on the outside. Hats look new on the outside, now the inside and under the bill get stains but that is going to be hard to stop in the 100+ heat we get.

As soon as you get home, just rinse the hat with water and set it out to dry. The problem comes when you let the sweat dry in the hat. If you rinse it out before it dries, the salt stains from the sweat won’t be there. Wash it with detergent (by hand if you are having shrinking problems, with cold water) every so many rounds.

I have a big melon, and have never had a problem with a hat shrinkin when washing them. I spray them with spray-n-wash and chunk them into the washer with my clothes. When they come out, I stuff a full size shower towel in them to help reshape them while they dry, and just set them up somewhere for the day.

I'm a sweater as well, and have been purchasing almost exclusively performance-fabric hats over the last several years.

One of the main reasons is that they wash out really well. Washing in cold and letting air dry hasn't ever done me wrong, even with various colours, with little to no shrinking or fading.

Personally, I also have a decent collection of hats overall, so keeping a rotation going is good as well to avoid over-saturating them. I usually wash a couple times a year, and only have had to replace a few of them, and only when they've seen their time (i.e. more than a few years old with some wear and tear)
