Best Driving Iron 2018

tap in birdie

Recommended Posts

Title says it all. Looking for opinions from people who use driving irons. I play blades up to the 4 iron but wanted a little extra love for a driving iron. Currently bag an mp-25 3iron on a light (nippon105) shaft. I love it and it gets me out a decent ways but was looking for something with extra meat. Maybe a 2 iron and just toss the 3.

Any suggestions?

I play the MP-64's full set with the PX 6.5s and loved my 3 iron but wanted a driving iron. I had the 3 bent to 17.5 degrees, threw a little lead tape on the sole for feel, and put in a px 6.0 shaft.

It is amazing. Mainly play it off the tee, but I can hit it off the deck as well. If you don't need the 3 iron distance in your gapping, and don't like the "clunky" look of a lot of driving irons, this is a good solution.

I still want to hit a driving iron, and see what kind of distance/flight difference it produces but for now I have a hard time going away from the set up I made...

Owned the Cobra Utility, both UDIs, and countless others. The MP18 Fli Hi is a gosh damn Unicorn. It is the most fade bias'd iron i've ever hit and it feels amazing. Best club in my bag

I’d be concern with reducing almost 4* of bounce and offset?

I have my 900T bent a degree strong to 20*.

I just picked up a 790 at 17* and that thing is almost as long as my 3 wood; easily kicked out my U45. Has good feel as well and I can swing as hard as I want with it.

I'm a big Mizuno fanboy, but did not like the MP18 Fli Hi. Felt hollow and gross to me. Performed well, but couldn't get over the feel. I haven't hit it, but the new Callaway X Forged Utility looks amazing at address.

Same for me. I’ve been playing Mizuno irons since early 2000’s but did not like the MP18 FliHi either. Tried the Srixon but the top line was too square looking and feel was ok. I haven’t really tried Titleist irons until I hit the 716 T-MBs and really liked them. They set up really nice and feel solid when compared to the other utility irons I tried.

I play MP18s and recently picked up a 718 TMB 2. I have it shafted with the same shafts as my irons and it fits what I need perfectly. I couldn't get consistent results from the Mizuno FliHi, didn't like the look of the callaway DI, and never got a chance to hit the p790 UDI. Loved the look, sound, feel, and performance of the TMB so I put it in the bag. You probably couldn't go wrong with any of these options. The TMB is taking place of my 3 iron. I loved the 3, just only used it on shorter tight holes for tee shots. Having this TMB gives me the option to use this as my main club off of most tee boxes, it goes long and low enough to give me a better opportunity on my approach.

Thanks for the replies thus far! I’m also a Mizuno loyalist. My whole bag is mizuno and callaway (not a huge fan of the mizuno drivers). My biggest issue is I play a draw so a “fade biased” DI would not suit me. I do believe in the bias, whether it’s aesthetic or tech, because I’ve had a few bad experiences with certain drivers.

Anyway I really wanted to like the mp18 flihi but was underwhelmed by it. I’m not opposed to any company, just saying I really wanted to like the mizuno and I couldn’t.

For me its a Titleist 716 TMB 2-iron (17*) Because I don't try to hit it as far as my strength allows, I always find the fairway. Set at 39.5 with Project X 6.0 Blue Tour Issue Hybrid/Driving Iron shaft.

I didnt care for the u65, the sole was ginormous and misses away from center were punished. The callaway ut is very nice, forgiving, and is easy to hit T or turf. I demo'd a tmb 20* last week and it was also a real treat to hit. Those would be my 2 picks.

I Have dibbeled and dabbled in the driving iron scene not going to kiss and tell about the sexy driving irons I've had . I have the 716 TMB now and I really love it I just ordered another one today . My buddy that loves to apply lead tape to his clubs hast the new Taylormade p790 or whatever 2 iron with a graphite design UT 95x and he is head over heals for that thing and he too has been with a lot of sexy driving irons . Start with these 2 and if you aren't happy spend money on different shafts and then fall in love .

It’s really not close. Gonna be a p-790 or PXG. Done, end of story. If you haven’t played those clubs or hit them for a period of time you just don’t know what you’re talking about.

Whatever lol

Tried the 718 TMB the other day and just was NOT a fan of the feel - felt really hollow and couldn't get use to it. Still searching for my unicorn.
