Why do caddy’s throw range balls to players?

I remember when all players played persimmon drivers the caddie would toss the ball to the player. And if the balls were damp the caddie would dry it off with a towel. I think it was the player didn't want any dirt or sand particles to damage the insert on their drivers. When they hit irons the players always rake a ball over from the pile of balls to hit. The irons were going to get the faces marked up anyway so it didn't matter that much. But a good persimmon driver was so hard to find and once you did that driver might stay in your bag for 10 years or more. I did the same thing in tournaments when I would have a caddie. Or if I didn't have a caddie I would clean each range ball if I was hitting my driver. The players probably do it now for the same reason. It's easier to find a driver today but a small grain of sand on a ball can still do quite a bit of damage to the face of your favorite driver.

The range balls are usually washed and still wet, and it's easier

Than getting your hand wet when teeing the ball and having to dry it

Makes perfect sense if you’ve ever seen a Driver with a sand blasted face. How else would you get them to the player ?

Drivers have very thin faces and tour pros hit the ball very hard. A couple grains of sand on the ball can damage the driver face.

So they don’t have to bend over to grab it and tee it up? Who knows really. Maybe it controls the pace so it is in a credence and helps their rhythm.

They tried using potato guns but while popular with caddies it quickly fell out of favor with the players.

Incase the linebacker job ever dissapears they will be ready for the WR position. If you can catch a tiny golf ball a football will be easy...just sayin. Man, these guys are good!

Not quite. They only explained why the player wants the balls thrown to them. I think the reason caddy's throw balls to the player is because the player tells them too :taunt:

Try hitting a wet ball with a driver, it tends to fly a lot lower.

Their range ball is their gamer. They pick up their own brand (and presumably their own type) when they go to the range.

All the brands and models played by the field are at the range. They, the event organizers ask what ball and model each pro will be playing.

 

What isn't available are the prototypes and testers a pro will do for the mfgr.

I always thought it was to control how quickly they were hitting the big stick but cleaning the balls prior to hitting makes a lot of sense for the longevity of the face

I've volunteered on the range at USGA national-level tournaments. A couple of reasons:

• Dry off washed but still wet range balls.
  
• Keep track of warm-up shots. A recent PGA tour clip described the pre-round warmup of one of the younger male pros. A total of 76 partial and full shots, with a specified number for various clubs. The caddie would need to help keep track of shots on a rigid checklist.

Almost all, my pros ball is never on the range.. We choose the lower spinning ball of the 2 available and hit them. When we chip we use the old ones out of our bag that we used yesterday, and we also hit the last few drivers with our old balls.
