Mizuno MP650 is the real deal

I love reading about great golf clubs that flew below the mainstream’s radar. I enjoy discovering things from the past that most folks missed the first time around—things that I missed the first time around. And if that is my addiction then golfwrx is my crack, because this website has an incredible wealth of oldie-but-goodie golf club knowledge. Over the years that knowledge has guided nearly all of my golf club purchases. Golfwrx is the reason I started collecting Sonartec hybrids and fairway woods. Without golfwrx I would not have even given Bridgestone clubs a second look and now they are my favorite manufacturer. A 975LFE driver here, a Redwood Zing putter there. Because of Golfwrx I have managed to go back and discover tons of great clubs that still hold up performance-wise to today’s offerings. And of all the amazing golf clubs that this website has turned me onto there is one that stands alone. One that not only holds up to today’s clubs but far exceeds them. The Mizuno MP650 driver. Sure, your mileage may vary. And there are plenty of great 'older' drivers out there (the J33 460 comes to mind). But, I can tell you as someone that has obsessed over superlative golf clubs—softest, most solid, furthest hitting, most forgiving, etc.—that in my experience there is no better all-around driver. And if there is anyone else out there like me—anyone who likes to pick through older drivers in a quest for the holy grail—all I can say is give the MP650 a try. This thing is the real deal.

Glad you like the driver. Any thoughts on the 650 hybrids?

Solid club. Forgiving on mishits but the club face is pretty small so you'd better be a good ball striker to begin with. As the poster above said, you need some game to play it.

I had all 3 mp650's. Driver, 3 wood, hybrid. Extremely good, but the 2d. open face on the driver and non-adjustable, makes it for better players only. The same goes for the 3 wood, but the hybrid was fine. Lower spin and launch on that though. Agree with the OP on vintage clubs. There are some timeless offerings, that are better than anything current. Ironically, I played a 975 LFE. It was probably the best Titleist driver ever. Long story, but the head broke off at the hosel, and TItleist ruined it trying to extract. They gave me a brand new 983K. I hated it, no where near as good. Sold it after 1 round.

There's a reason the 3W is going on 6 years in my bag. It's been through a few reshafts (the current one is the longest). But I've found nothing that can beat it for feel, sound and distance. And it's so easy to hit off the deck.

I've cycled through the driver a few times, always seemingly chasing something better. But then I end up picking up another and feeling back "at home". Finally I gave up because I can't find anything that i hit better. And both feel and sound amazing.

Funny you mentioned the 983K. Over the past couple years I have purchased nearly all the 'older' Titleist drivers spanning the 975D up through the 905R. Fairly cheap venture, actually. Beforehand I predicted the 983K would be my favorite. At the same time I figured the really old ones--basically anything beginning with 975--would feel solid but would not compete distance-wise with newer offerings. As it turns out I don't much like the 983K (ymmv) but I am in love with the 975LFE. And not just because it is so solid. This thing hits bombs.

I love seeing these threads! I still have a MP 650 driver and 3 wood that I break out from time to time. I was just thinking about trying it up against my M4 that I've been killing. The MP650 is legendary!!!

Been playing the 650 driver for a few years now with a Diamana Whiteboard 63x and it's the best driver I've hit so far, but I'm not a huge driver ho. I did pick up a 2016 Taylormade M2 for craps and giggles to try out. The 650 3 wood just didn't work for me, but it could be the shaft. I may be selling it soon, but won't get much I'm sure.

I have a MP-600 Driver which is actually the 1st movable weight driver on the market and although it doesn't get gamed any longer it was a great driver. The thing that

always amazed me is that not one of the Mizuno Staff players ever managed to play their drivers. I think Mizuno was also the 1st Titanium driver in the market as well.

I too had the MP-600. I thought it was an excellent driver, but the thing I most remember about it was, moving the weights did absolutely nothing other than change the sound and feel. I much preferred the driver in the neutral setting.

Ditto..... and to be fair I found the same result with other movable weight drivers so that's why I have played Ping Drivers the last 5-6 years.

Would tend to agree there as well. Given the choice, I would much prefer a more intricate level of adjustablility over movable weighting. Although, even adjustability has it's limitations. If you look at most driver adjustment charts, they'll advertise 40(?) possible combinations of settings. The problem is, I've found that 90% of those I would never use.

Recently picked up a mint MP 630 and it is absolutely fantastic, best driver I've ever hit. Looks great, goes like a cannon and sounds incredible.

It seems to love being swung hard and when you swing it up towards 120 the "CRACK" sound it makes is amazing and addictive.

Love it so much have just bought an equally mint MP 650 online which is arriving tomorrow - can't wait. Can it possibly be better?

Thought the 630 felt better than the 650 but it was not by very much really. More of a kush sound on the 630. Plus he liked the stock fubuki better than the orochi (?) shaft. Really, the last two drivers made by Mizuno that were excellent, nothing recently has come close. Decent, even good but nothing top notch according to Jack Pearsall.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I wanted to comment on this. Bought one from Fairway Golf for cheap with the stock Orochi shaft. Took it out yesterday for the first time. I was ripping this driver. I'm talking 25 yards further than my M2 and I don't know why. Didn't have an issue with the open face. The feel is excellent as well. I'm surprised like everyone else that this club didn't get more praise. I'm happily putting it in the bag.
