G400 Max...Holy Cow!!!

Recommended Posts

I've been keeping an eye out for a lefty 10.5 head. Literally none on eBay or the BST.

That is the best indicator of a good club if you ask me.

Or that everyone on ebay is a slicer....

I hit the G400 LST on Saturday against my M1, and M4 and the Rogue SZ. Just wanted to see if the "new tech" drivers had anything over the trusty M1

The Rogue SZ was the clear winner - at least 25yards longer than the G400 which felt dead to me. And I'm a Ping fan - played the G driver, 3 wood and Crossovers previously.

I was very disappointed with it as I really went with the intention of loving it. Didn't bother trying the Max and won't bother, unless someone tells me is much longer than the LST.

My trusty M1 came in second, didn't like the M4.

In the end though, couldn't justify £430 for the Rogue for just a 10 yard gain and given I'm hitting my M1 well at the moment (touch wood) I'll stick with that. at least I got it out my system...

My LST is every bit as long as my Rogue SZ was. Yes, when hit on the screws the SZ was about 10 yards longer, but when I missed the sweet spot with the SZ, I lost significant yardage. Close to 25 yards and missed the fairway pretty substantially. The LST is by far and away more forgiving than the SZ. Misses with the LST, for me, are losing maybe 10 yards and are still in the fairway. My worst shots with the LST are no more than 5 yards off of the fairway and that's not an exaggeration. It is hands down the most accurate driver I've ever played.

You ain't getting mine...lol. Now that I have played a few more rounds, still loving mine. As expected, it is not bullet proof, but boy does it perform when you put any sort of a decent swing on it.

PM me when you are selling it next week ;)

Ha, not happening. G400 Max is a real game-changer. Feels so solid and forgiving. Good luck finding one, just not mine. :)

Agree with the comment about not a lot of used ones being sold. I ordered mine from a local shop that sells mostly used equipment. The owner says he can always tell how good a new club is by how many get traded back in.

He sees very few PING G400 Max's being traded in.

Just got the Max! It arrives in a week....game a g30 LST which I really like so its gonna have to be awesome to kick its grandpa out the bag... hope it sounds better, my poor ears

So took it out yesterday on course and wasnt that impressed compared to my G30 LST ..... still testing tho....had a couple of those drives that rise up on a curve which Im guessing is spinning too much and G30 never hits that shot

Can't figure how to like my own posts

Low on the face spin like crazy for me.

Took me a couple rounds to figure it out and adjust but I’m teeing it up much higher than I did with the F8 and it’s a much better flight and lower spin. Seems to go forever with the Evenflow Black 6.0. I’m tempted to try the 6.5, actually and see if it’s possible to get any more out of it.

Sound is great-not loud unless it’s off the toe-then it sounds like the G.

Just a great driver, really.

Only PING I have in the bag but it’s a good one!

Got fitted for a Max with the Tour 75S. Love the driver. As many say does not fix a bad swing but masks small errors nicely and have found parts of the course I never knew existed (center of the fairway! LOL) Love this driver. Still adjusting to lining up to the middle of the fairway then the far left expecting the ball to make a hard right.

Why are you saying "new tech" when comparing your m1 to this year's offerings? One of the main reasons nothing could really impress you is because your old driver is only 2 years old lol and packed with "new tech". Carbon crown, sliding weights, adjustability, etc etc.

This G400 MAX has been getting rave reviews on here. Can this many people really be wrong?

I'm not saying anyone is wrong. The G400 drivers are great drivers, they just didn't work for me, even though I went thinking they absolutely would. Besides, I'll take my own monitor numbers over WRX forum opinion, thank you very much, regardless of the weight of it.

As for new tech, I'll rephrase to newER or alternative tech, ie. No sliding weights. TBF though, jailbreak, Twistface, etc. they're all "new" tech.

Have to say after my honeymoon period with my max it’s been moved on on eBay.

Just found it delivered way to much spin for my swing . Gone back to my trusty GBB epic.

Both me and my son play the epic and on normal days I’m always around 10 yards back from him .

But from the minute I had the max was as much as 20 to 25 yards back from him , always nice and straight but such a loss in distance compared to my epic I could just not live with .

But I’m not for 1 minute saying the max is a bad driver just not a fit for me .

Quick update from me, selling my M2 because the G400 Max is super impressive. Originally ordered with the Tour 75x, not a great fit it was just too whippy, switched to a black HZRDUS 75 6.5 and the combo is really impressive. My normal miss is a heel shot that goes high + right and seems to spin off the planet, with the G400 it starts to fade then is just a gentle fall to the right. Played 36 the other weekend and hit 21 of 28 fairways, this thing is staying in the bag for sure.

Any slower swinging mid-caps playing the Max? If so, how are you getting along with it? My SS is low 90's. Curious about what might be a suitable shaft. I will get properly fitted for sure but just asking the group.

I have a sub 90mph driver SS. 400 Max has been fantastic for me. I have had confidence in this driver from the very first swing. I started with the stock reg. flex Alta and would hit the occasional balloon ball.

I took a GD DI out of an old tour exotic driver I had laying around, put a PING adapter on it, tipped it about half an inch, ordered the 18 gram weight from Golfworks and went to town. Still regular flex Graphite Design, but it brought the flight down.

Did it instantly add 50 yards to my drive, of course not; but it did get me in the fairway 240 yards away from where I started more consistently than any other driver I've ever hit.

I swing at 93 - 95 mph. I have a Fujikura Vista Pro 65 Tour (5.7) shaft (44.75"). It's a high launch shaft for old folks who struggle to get the ball airborne.

I find the G400 MAX is so forgiving I'm swinging faster and faster at the ball and still finding fairways. I've never had a driver I could use close to 100% effort with and be rewarded. I hit a few today 280 (had some wind at my back) but I am hitting more at 260 than 240 because i can just swing away with it.

Well I was over spinning my max - sold to my buddy that loved it w the Aldila Phenom TX - and today I took out the LST

Fitter says common with guys swinging over 100 fwiw

Sadly the 8.5 head. .. I turned it up to 9.5

However, with my purple oban 55x I hit flat dead straight bullets ... that wouldn't go left

Comments:

- nicer footprint than max

- better sound

- the carry could've been better

- spin felt low

I'm going to find a 10 to try but also wiil try a heavier weight as well

The lst seemed to drop spin way more than the 300 Ping claims on its site

I had the Ping G400 and liked it. Then the Callaway Rogue came out and I was curious, because I read how long it was. Well my handicap starting rising from a 6 to an 8, because I was not finding the fairways as much even though I was 10 yards longer. Decided to exhange the Rogue to a Ping G400 LST and haven’t looked back as my hdcp is down to a 4. Best driver I ever had and have no interested in other drivers at the moment.

Now the new Mizuno JPX irons is another story.

Anybody have success with the LST at 8.5 and cranking it up to 9.5 to close the face?

I had been playing the LST 8.5 on the little plus setting, think that makes it 9.1, and had good launch numbers around 13 but was spinning a bit more than I want so dropped it back to standard 8.5 and I had one of my best driving rounds of the year.

The jury is still kinda out on this driver for me.

trying to find the perfect combo. I've got a Kuro Kage TiNI X and a HZRDUS Black 6.5. Still way early in the testing but so far the KK is launching too high and the HZ is too low. I'm going to mess with the settings some more and try to dial it in.

The one benefit of it over the Epic SZ with the Evenflow Blue is the two way miss is gone.

10/13 Fairways hit yesterday, including a 343 yd drive (downhill once you hit a certain distance) Makes the game so much more enjoyable. Two of the three misses were on the first two holes with no warm-up and were slight misses. The third was also just a few feet into the tall stuff.

I mentioned in another post that I had some difficulty with the Alta shaft and just switched to the Tour 65 and what a big difference. You can really feel the'speed' off the face but you need to match it up with the correct shaft. Hopefully I did with the switch. Hit some bombs this past weekend which was really nice.
