Maltby TS2

Hi all, not sure if this is the best place to ask but it seems to be the place people are discussing Maltby product on these forums. Do let me know if I should take this question somewhere else.

I'm looking to replace my current set of irons (Callaway Steelhead XR w/ TT XP 95 R flex), mainly because the stock shaft feels too light and whippy to me, especially on the long irons. Originally I had just planned on buying shafts and having someone reshaft the clubs for me, but I got to poking around Golfworks and reading up on Maltby and now I'm thinking I'll sell the Callaways and get a new set of Maltbys.

I'm thinking either the STi2 or the PTM with the standard Score shaft trimmed to stiff. I swing pretty shallow and don't take much of a divot so I figure I should be looking at an iron with a low CoG. I'm 6'3" with a 36" wrist to floor, so I'll be ordering +0.5" length and 1.5° upright (according to Ping static fitting chart). I'm a high enough handicap (typically shoot around 100) that I figure I should get an affordable set of GI irons until I get some consistency then go in for a proper fitting at some point.

That's a lot of text that isn't really related to the question I'm asking which is: would the STi2 or PTM be better for a high handicap shallow swinger?

Thanks

5427d367-a0ea-43ae-85aa-7ea88e09c158.jpegAren't they pretty ???. Just unpacked them and hit few balls into the woods. Not bad, not bad at all... I wish the top line was a hair thinner (they are actually little thicker then the XTD Tours/S58s I’ve been playing), but since the offset is very minimal, I don’t think I’ll have an issue getting used to them. Interestingly, the 8i in the TS-2s is about the same length as the 7i in the Adams set.

You found the place for all things Maltby. I think you will like the TT Score LT shafts. There will be a good 10+ gram jump with the LTs. Plus have them cut to Stiff might also help bring the flight down.

The COG of the STI2 is just slightly lower than the PTM but not enough to really effect flight between the two.

The value in the STi2 club pack is tough to pass up. They would be a great set to tide you over till you get a good fitting. Good luck.

Had a chance to hit them at a driving range. First impressions are quite positive. Unfortunately, only mattes were open, so not quite sure how they interact with the turf. They definitely like to go straight. Distance-wise, I didn't notice much difference between them and my old gamers (S58s and XTD Tours), but it was HOT and STEAMY - my hands were sweating like crazy and I was afraid to lose the grip completely after few shots. Next stop - grass range :).

Oh, almost forgot - the TSW wedges appear to be keepers as well. For a LONG time, I've had a phobia of hitting my 56* SW. I don't know if it was the bounce, or what, but I literally stopped using it altogether in the past year or so. Anything over a stock LW (80-85yards) was a half or 3/4 GW. I'm really hoping the 54* TSW will fill the ~100 yard spot.

I’m wanting to pick up a used set of TS2 heads just to give them a try. I’ve been looking and not much out there which tells me maybe they’re that good?!?!?!

Cole-- most likely the case. I am a club ho and never have stuck with the same set for over a season. Usually swap 2 or 3 in a season. That is just not happening with these. The only swapping would be looking for "shaft perfect"...

I hope you get a used set.. It won't be from me

The ISO-T is a fade biased driver but can be a monster with the right golfer. The KE4 TC is a better option. Of course your right miss might be shaft driven.

I've been slacking in picking up the two new options. The STi2 from what I hear is a solid lower cost option. The 890 is for a senior, woman golfer that needs help everywhere.

KE4 TC with even the stock Maltby shaft is a solid option. The adjustable hosel is a nice touch. The weight port in the sole allows you to dial in SW it also helps spin numbers as well. KE4 has great feel as well. Being Ti has more of a classic driver sound rather than the dull Thwack of a carbon crown.

My honest opinion......

I could t hardly get the KE4 driver to turn over for draw ball flight no matter where I set the hosel. I can literally pick up 2-3 other drivers I have and turn them over no problem. With the KE4 driver I got straight ball flights or fades. I even tried the exact same shaft in my STW2

the STW2 driver is a different story. Nothing but straight to draw ball flights. I didn’t fade one ball and I didn’t hit big hooks either.

I know that you know the reason they fit your game so well. There is some serious bounce built into those irons. Which is good for a digger.

I had another brand with similar bounce specs and had trouble with them on firm turf in the Winter in Arizona. Eventually gave up even after grinding some of the bounce away.

The PTM'S may not fit a sweeper.

Don't be fooled by pictures. The grind on these is perfect. The sole is nothing like other wide sole clubs.

For comparison- my son plays Cleveland RTX 4 wedges. The sole is quite comparable-- the polished finish seems to make them look larger in photo's is my OPINION.

I like to play the low driving one hop approach and flighting these is quite easy. They really are all that and a bag of chips IMO. I am contemplating a 56-60 configuration for my back up bag..

@GolfSwang with the beveled sole you are able to play these sitting normally or really lay it open. Ill post some close ups of the sole. These are hardly a Vokey replacement as they are meant for Joe Average. The MG Tour will run with a Vokey. This sole has been evolving for a while and the smaller head is a nice improvement as well.
It has a shorter blade length but a slightly higher toe. In hand they are as good looking a head as anything on the market. I love the new small Maltby medallion.

You hit the nail on the head. I have been deadly with these. I have yet to leave one in the turf. I have so much confidence in every shot im standing over. Also the shafts which are the Xcaliber Pro X is a shaft i have been playing for so long. Tinkered with steel again for a year but went right back to these. Benefit of steel, distance of graphite and far easier on the joints.

For a sweeper I don't think you could find a better iron than the TE. There is a huge reason these have been in the catlog for over 15 years. Low CG, butter soft feel and pretty forgiving.

A Vokey or an MG Tour has a fairly sharp leading edge and a flat grind. Great on County Club turf or the Tour for that matter.

The TSW should be a very versatile grind. Im waiting on some Spin Wedge shafts that are sort of lost in shipping. But I will put these in play in two weeks after I go back out to sea and home again.

If you are a true scratch golfer that needs no help whatsoever buy the MG Tour. If your like the rest of us buy the TSW or the M-Series +
