Can anyone comment on the playability and performance of the MMB-17 versus the TS-1?

I know that the TS-1 are 3* stronger loft in 7-iron, almost a full club different.  I'm currently hitting my old MMB-17 black in AMT White S400 and really liking them.  But, I'd like to move to the TS1 in a higher swingweight (D5) with ability to adjust the lies.

The MMB-17 was an amazing design that allowed a blade to play like a cavity back. It was precise and consistent and I've shot some of my best Golf with them.  Problem for me.... that sharp leading edge would create massive divots with my steep swing. Sometimes I wouldn't even get through the turf. If I was playing on an elite course they would Glide through he turf. But most of my golf is on a muni. So those clubs would punish my game and wrists.

Now the TS-1s come along and have this amazing 4 way sole that seems to laugh at fat shots. The difference in sole design is drastic in how they play.

If I could combine the sole of the TS-1 to the MMB-17 then I'm pretty sure I would never play another iron. The Hogan Icon/PTxPro is 'that' club-ish... but it's a much smaller head than anything Maltby would make.

I'm hoping the TS-4 is that mix of MMB-17 with the TS-1 sole.

If you are a purist the TS-1 might leave you wanting a bit. While close its just not that same solid forged feel... but its close.

For a players design the TS-1 is a really tough club to beat. For its size its extremely forgiving. It's plenty long enough and precise.

As with any Maltby club its very easy to aquire just one and test away.

Sorry that got long winded.

If I followed if earlier Golf Galaxy Owned Golf-works and was bought by Dicks. Dicks Owns Top Flite and Maxfli. Dicks really only carries a few Golfworks things in store.

Golfsmith was bought by Golf Galaxy then Dick’s bought Golf Galaxy.
Not GolfWorks…

Golf Galaxy bought Golfworks

from Ralph Maltby. He created a line of irons MHS and some other clubs for their stores. When Dicks bought GG they discontinued the Maltby lines in the stores.
Dicks bought Golfsmith in bankruptcy and closed them out for the most part.

Do any you blokes know what happened to Ralph?   he just disappeared from the forums overnight (or when they rejigged them) and it was around the same time he was releasing or rewriting a book.

I am hesitant to ask Britt on the forums, there might be reasons why they have never said so given then Ralphs name is still plastered all over the place.  I would have thought if he had retired they would have said so.

its not that Britt isnt as engaging or knwledgable,  but I had several conversations with Ralph and its not everday that you get to know personally the designer of your golf clubs.

So I have stumbled onto this thread and my head is spinning.  lol  SO much information.

In the spring I decided to get new irons and I just cant get use to them to save my life.  Being dumb, I sold my old ones and regret it.  My old ones were Callaway XR OS irons.  After finding this thread, I am considering getting a TS-2 7 iron in my specs to try out.  Where I am lost is shaft.  Seriously considering going graphite.  The XR OS had True Temper SpeedStep 80 stiff shafts in them.  I really go along with those clubs and not totally sure why I got rid of them.  Anyway, considering going with the UST SmacWrap 780 in stiff.  Anyone have any insight for me?

Have you considered the maltby pro series graphite shafts?

I play them in the sti2 heads. Like them alot and they are approx same weight as your present shafts ie 80 gms.

Note the maltbies play stiff to flex.

Have you played the Kuro Kage? Ordered in my 54 but I also ordered a Maltby R flex to try in a 7 iron

Are you sensitive at all to shaft flex? Weight? Only reason I ask is I might recommend other shafts before that one.

I have the TT Elevate 95 shafts currently and hate them. The speedsteps were in my old ones I should have kept.

Honestly, not sure. Why would you recommend something else?  Just curious

I haven't. I didn't see them as an option when I looked earlier today.

Maltby pro series could be a great option as well as the Mitsubishi kuro kage. The Maltby shafts tend to play just a touch firm. I’ve hit the 95 and 110 Recoil (not the smack wrap) before and personally I’m not a fan.

Don’t see the pro series as a option for the TS2 but do see them for the STI2

that being said these are just club paks. You can alawats go into the custom shop and build whatever you want.

I haven't hit a graphite shaft in about 15 years. I just know the Elevates don't agree with me. Graphite is appealing as lately I've felt the effects of steel a day or day after playing. I'm sure 30 years of hockey doesn't help

Trust me I know exactly what you’re feeling 😂 I’ve got years of heavy powerlifting on my body. Along with being a heavy equipment mechanic for the last 28 years of my life. I don’t regret switching to graphite iron shafts one bit!
