McDowell loses clubs, can’t play tomorrow, why?

I didn't get his logic, he stated he was better off not playing and preparing for the Irish but how much preparation can he do if he wont play without the missing set of clubs. I'm sure he feels it would decrease his chances but its not like an injury where if he played he could be harming the remainder of his season.

To me it seems a like a nothing to lose situation.

Because he will have a set by today, Tuesday, and can play a practice round and prep for the tournament while also conserving a ton of energy.

Fair enough but what was preventing him getting a set in time to play, purely logistics?

Links golf can be very energy sapping especially when the weather is poor but the UK is experiencing very good spell of weather at the moment and its one day of golf.

I'm not going to bash him as I don't have an inside track but I stand by my assertion that its seems like a nothing to lose situation but he's the best judge of his chances.

Absolutely logistics. He probably didn’t get a set made/shipped until 1pm today. I had a player if this exact same predicament at the actual Open and they actually had his heads on the van and took til about 12 the next day to get an entire set made. It’s a 36 hole qualifier which started early in the morning. No way you’ll get a set in time when you don’t realize they’ve been lost until mid day the day before.

he was committed to play in both the qualifier and the irish open (as i understand his tweet and other sources), so he obviously wanted numerous chances ... i'm sure he's not the only pro that wouldn't have wd from the qualifier, but it still begs the question why not give it a shot since you were already committed to both ...

iteach, a pro who works with pros, has already spelled out a few times why it does NOT beg the question.

An awesome range just south of Lytham and one of the finest club fitters in the UK near Warrington. They could have fitted him up in half an hour.

This is his WITB from last year - do you think that any club fitter in the world can make a complete set in 30 minutes, with 4 year old heads that they probably don't have in store, plus swing weight them and do whatever else he needs you to do in terms of loft/lie adjustments? It will take longer than that for just the grips to dry.

Such a great thread to show just how oblivious people are when it comes to tour golf on several levels. So many experts with so little knowledge. Thanks for never disappointing. Now off to the instruction forum to read 15 handicaps critiquing paid instructors.

It's like posting on a car forum with no knowledge of the internal combustion engine other than it goes vroom vroom

At the open if you need clubs they will be built asap, unless using some Radom clubs that are not vans?

They were built ASAP which meant early afternoon the next day. That’s literally as fast as they could be made. I was literally standing right there the entire time and the story got worldwide coverage. He was one of 3 players last year who lost their clubs and it took until mid day for all of them to have sets built.

But please continue telling me I’m wrong.

is it the epoxy drying time that took over 24 hours to build? Im not sure they could use those curing machines with ferrule. Probably have a lot of club work to do as well for other players but I know at my job in emergency situations like Julian's, we work round the clock till resolved

Iron heads had to be shipped to the site, got there around 9 am Tuesday, and then they took a few hours to build and cure. Woods, wedges, and putter were done Monday afternoon. The cans don’t travel with a ton of iron sets in their drawers. Ryan Mcarthy who plays Titleist clubs that were the current models lost his on the same flight and his irons also had to be shipped next day from Titleist. They are also VERY busy working on stuff for other players. There’s only a few guys working on clubs in each van.

I remember seeing an interview/program with Goosen.regarding this sort of thing.

They were talking about his back up driver. I think it was possibly R9 era.

Anyway, Same head and shaft type, it took over 200 attempts to get one with the same playing characteristics that he was happy with.

Pro golfers get a whole different level of fitting compared to us mere mortals.

I call bs ... The way GMac has been playing it might have been a gift if he tried something new. If it didn't work the end result would have been the same...not making the tournament.

And before you flame me -- he is below the top 125 2017 and 2018 ... and seems to make his money having a few decent finishes each year...

Finally .. love his Nona Blue Bra/Grill and really like him as he seems to handle himself with a lot of class... just saying something new might be what he needs.

That's shocking was just seeing if there was a reason, vans are busy but special cases normally get priority

Wasn't having a dig, just very rare that they run out of iron heads those weeks as most the top players are already into product, played in 09 and a set was built for another player from scratch in about an hour, that's why I was surprised and assumed they were rare model or an unusual product

They simply didn’t have any on site. Next day aired them but that wouldn’t be fast enough to play first thing Tuesday morning. And because they got he run around with the airline they didn’t start trying to put together a new set until mid afternoon Monday. They thought they would simply come on the next flight later on Monday.
