Too low of a spin rate? Apex cf16 (MERGED)

mefnocerous

Recommended Posts

So I recently got fitted for the callaway apex cf16 irons because they were so much longer than my gamer ping s55's.

6 iron average carry went from 167ish to 180ish while launch angle stayed at 17.

This is all well and good and seems like a great upgrade except my spin with the cf16s averaged 3955. I feel like that is really low. Approaching unplayably low for a 6 iron.

Granted the spin on my s55 was only 4500 avg, so I'm not generating a ton of spin anyways.

Question is what can I do about this?

Go apex pro or epic pro or something like that?

Put in a higher spin shaft?

Stick with it and see if I can actually hold a green?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Sounds like it might be more of a golfer issue rather than a golf club issue.

Wrong forum

Best to move this to equipment.

But since it’s here I’ll say this:

Move on, I got rid of my CF16’s for that reason, great irons but it didn’t hold greens. Apex Pro’s are way better but gapping on both sets can be messy so maybe take a look into some JPX900 Forged or Srixon 575-765 combos

Maybe try looking at the spin for a specific distance hit, rather than the number on the bottom of the club.

Iron numbers are just a number you use to reference your distances. A 150 yard club is still a 150 yard club regardless of the number on the bottom.

A fair and realistic comparison is to compare the spin, height and dispersion of your new 150 yard club to the spin, height and dispersion of your old 150 club. That is how you can see if your new irons "fit" you better.

Were those numbers taken hitting off a mat?

They are low spin irons, that is why they go so far. Same for Rogue irons, also known for low spin and questionable stopping power.

And you may be low spin to begin with. Do you hit ‘up’ with your irons at impact or flip your hands? Both moves will reduce backspin.

Could try a softer shaft with a higher spin profile or weaken the lofts 1-2 degrees or work on hitting down and through the ball more.

Shaft. Shaft. Shaft.

I had t-mb with amt x100s. Great clubs, but being silly I swapped in c-tapers, as my last three sets (FGV4, apex pro 14, anser forged) all had them and I love the performance and look.

I went one round and missed greens both left and because I couldn’t hold 3-6i.

Put the amt back in and stop the 5i within 12’ in any green again.

Shaft. Seriously. Changes the world. But go get fit with the right head.

The cheapest way is to change the lofts by 2 degrees and get a high spinning golf ball. Problem solved.

True, to a point. You would change the bounce 2* and still spin less depending on what shaft you were considering. It really changes a clue, and all head/shaft combos are unique IMO

A couple of things you could try:

  • Have the iron shafts softstepped. This would put a longer flex length in the tip, and increase spin.
  • Go with a higher spin ball.

Unless I missed something, what shaft do you have in the irons right now? Also, what is your driver clubhead speed?

In your sig line, you show TM Tour Preferred irons. But, you have no mention of the Ping or Callaway irons, or their specs.

Chip, in my garage I've got all 3 sets.

Ary, I did not have problems stopping the s55's.

Shafts, i have the rifle flighted in my TPs, Nippon 950s in the s55's and Oban CT 115s in my apex's.

Driver Swing speeds lurks around 99... id love to say 100 but i really live at 98-99.

On the trackman my 6 iron ball speed 119, club speed 82.

Specs wise the pings are red dot and apex are bent one flat so comparable lie angles.

Lofts are currently unchanged so apex runs about 3-4 degrees stronger through the whole set.

Which would certainly account for the distance on its own but launch angles were identical. Sadly I don't have peak height numbers.

When we say high spin balls- proV1/x? What's known as the spinniest ball out there?

I'm sure I can find spinnier shafts than the obans but they are rrallly really smooth (and expensive) so trying to find some other variable I can change instead of shaft.

Might get a reference point from here, http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1623768-2018-golf-ball-spin-chart/page__st__30__p__17626782__hl__+spin%20+chart#entry17626782

You need to hit a few balls at the range and on course to see if you can "hold" a green.

Always interesting when YouTube reviewers and forum posters worry about spin. Proper gap testing gives you your distances full, half, partial swings. Unless you over club you hold the green. Just because a 6 iron has a 5 iron loft shouldn't change anything.

If they didn't hold greens no one would ever buy them. You take the correct club for the distance. That's golf.

Hey Jonny, I don't know what your deal is but I moved my post to the correct forum and you still felt the need to comment? Go take your SLDR and get lost man. A lot of people provided me very helpful and knowledgeable feedback (which is what this site is for), and I appreciate them taking the time to do so. I always try to help out others if I have some useful insight on the topic.

What did your comment here, or on the other post, bring to the table? I didn't mention jacked lofts or gapping issues. I didn't say it was a flawed product. I asked if people thought my spin rate was low enough that I needed to change something. Good luck trolling tho, you loser.

Wow. That's a pathetic response. Asking about spin and holding greens and you haven't bothered to test them? Yeah that's a crazy idea, silly me.

If you can't hold a green you've not clubbed correctly is the point. If your brain hasn't figured that out then God knows youll need all of that helpful information you're getting.

Public forum too so tough. Don't like common sense go elsewhere. Maybe you're doing the trolling though. Especially if you don't know the answer to such a simple question lol. I'll know not the bother with such a simple minded person though.

Good luck holding greens, hope you give everyone a laugh trying.

Ya! Why do all those "YouTube videos" and "professional golfers" even care about spin rates?! Someone contact trackman and tell them to take spin rates off there- just replace it with a feature that says "try a half swing!" Million dollar idea. Revolutionizing the industry. It's the equipment forum, I'm asking about equipment. I'd point you to the instruction forum, but I'm sure you're already all over that one Jonny. Would have preferred if you said keep your head down.

Well, I see the nastiness is gone. Good.

OK, here are some thoughts.

You're a 5 handicapper; a "player". And you think 167-180 with a club 3-4 degrees stronger and less spin is "longer" because they're both "6 irons" ? And you got them because they were longer than your S55s ? Hard to believe. No offense but dispersion is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than length, even if they WERE longer (which they really aren't).

But my main thought initially was "do you actually HAVE the irons or was this just from a fitting" but it seems as though you do HAVE them.

If so, why even start the thread until you've hit those irons TO a real green and see what happens. Since you don't have peak height (AND angle of descent ?) EVERYBODY is just GUESSING. and you have the answer yourself - you just haven't tried them out yet.

You haven't even hit the club "live" yet and you're asking whether you should get a different club head ? Seriously ?
