Any News on a TaylorMade P770 Replacement? (Pics added pg 8)

Recommended Posts

The above photo of Karl Vilips looks like the 760 but hard to tell. He has always been supported by TM and I could see him testing them. So cool to see him growing up. We will see him on Tour one day.

OT, but I provided some transportation for Karl when he played in the same AJGA invitational as my daughter here in NJ. Very nice young man and incredibly focused and intense about his future in golf for such a young guy.

Remember on the Pxxx models, the number referred to blade length - 730 being the smallest and 790 the longest.

760 will fit between the 750 and 770. The tech if you will is the use of speed foam and tungsten.

Pics cannot be released yet sorry

As you are someone who has seen them. How did the long irons look? Think I’d like a combo set of 770/750. Or now maybe 790/760. I play a full bag of the P790 currently. But find it really tough with any workablility with the shorter irons. If the P760 long irons are not 750 size id definitely consider putting a full bag of them in play. As per your top line post, looks as if they are more Ap2 size maybe a hair smaller?

I don’t think you will need to mix the 760 with the 790. The 760 long irons do not look that small to my eye, more 770 like. The 760’s look a bit thicker in the top line than PSI tours with what looks like a more progressive offset. The 790’s may be a 1 off club like a 3 iron added to the set for most I would guess.

I’ve heard it said that the 760s are much like a combo set up. Is that how you would categorize them?

I've heard nothing but good things about the 760's. It should be a winner for TM for sure but it'll be weird to not have a traditional MC to choose from.

I agree. Which is why I think it would be best if they did a two model release. 760 (w/ mostly player qualities) and 780 that would still offer the player dispersion but they could mix in some forgiveness. For the people that can’t handle the compact blade length. And for the compact crew, they could combo the 760/780.

Redundant. As long as the P790 stays in the program no need for a 780 for combo purposes.

The 790,770 and 750/730 were a great combo set and easy to set up from the lofts for proper gapping.

If the 730's stay in the program, you'll be seeing 790, 760 and 730's as a possible combo.

I don’t think it was redundant. The 790’s just went too far with too little spin. A 780 (bigger 770 with slightly more forgiveness would basically be the new 770 replacement.

Similar to pings I 210 and i500 or Titleist Ap2 and AP3. You’d have a “control club and a distance club that are similar profiles (780/790)

Good catch sir!

Nope, staying with the P790/P770 setup which I have, and will pick up the 730's for the bottom end of the set and add a 790 4 iron.

Then it's

3 & 4 790

5/6/7 770

8/9/PW & AW 730

Don't like the idea of speed foamed mid irons. For me as a short hitter can't take a chance with my distance control

1. Not a forged head...probably cast like the P790;

2. The carved back is likely to provide some perimeter weighting...prefer the clean look of the P790 myself;

3. With the 7 iron at 33* the lofts appear to be more reasonable for a normal distance...no more 220 yard 7 irons..,.. lol

It says it’s forged in the photo

So does the P790, which is cast body...hardened steel face only.

Here is another "forged" iron....Ping i500. Problem is it is a "cast" head with a hardened steel face.

Come on guys, just because it says Forged on it, doesn’t mean it’s a true forging. The face is forged but the body is cast like a bunch of other irons (p790’s i500’s)

As long as the iron has some sort of forging process in it, they can get away with putting forged on the club, don’t fall for that BS

It says it’s forged in the photo
Like the 790 it may be a cast body with a forged face.

On the contrary, the Japanese words say it has a S25C forged body with a cast SUS630 face.

Probably an error since both the Titleist T-MB and Ping i500 use S25C cast bodies not forged. All of these irons have hardened steel faces to avoid cracking due to the flex they have.

On the contrary, the Japanese words say it has a S25C forged body with a cast SUS630 face.

Would this mean a thinner face a la p790?

Yes, it will have a thin hardened steel face like the P790 that is supported by the Speedfoam.

I wonder if the design in the picture continues throughout the set or are the 7 iron down fully forged? If the design shown is how these clubs are constructed I can see lots of YouTube reviews between the P760 and PXG 0311T Gen 2 sets.
