G700 Irons - Taking apart

Anyone else take apart any G700 irons and find a tip plug in the bottom? Didn't really expect that from Ping.

 

In the S wedge with a LZ steel shaft, there was an aluminum plug/tip weight that took up about 1/2" in the hosel and had a "7" on the bottom (I'm assuming grams but I drilled it out so I don't know for sure).

 

Sure messes up the re-install since now I don't really know if I should install the next shaft to the bottom of the bore or guess at how much I need to fill to make it play the same.

Just reshafted my G700 5 iron. No surprises or anything different from any others that I've done.

 

Of course that is the only G700 I have. The rest of the irons are i200s.

That's why it surprised me. That and the bottom of the shaft comes nowhere near the the bottom of the hosel. If this guy ever wants the original shaft put back, it will be tough. Not sure if they just installed the shaft on top of the plug or tipped it to compensate or if some of the weight fit into the shaft (like a graphite tip weight).

 

Hoping that some others have pulled a few apart and can relate their findings. Maybe the SW was a one off?

Having done a few more G700's this week, they all have tip plugs in them. They take up 3/8" at the bottom of the hosel (at least the 5 I've done).

 

Have to say the engineering on this design leaves a lot to be desired. Even with the recommended ferrule from Billy Bob's the fit is so sloppy you really have a hard time getting a non-cocked fit. Even if you drill out the plug and insert the shaft all the way to the bottom, it really isn't acceptable. You need to jury-rig something to get a straight shaft.

They do this so that they can add equal weight to the toe screw and hosel. For example: When building the clubs, if you need an additional 4 grams, they will add 2 on the screw side, ad 2 on the hosel side. It's how they get one head to fit so many color codes. I suppose you could actually request the weighting to be toe/hosel biased.

I just wish billy bobs or one of the other component companies would produce and sell some of the toe screws in different weights.

I should be able to easily swingweight my irons with these if they were just available.

The ones I've seen don't have anything in the port. You would think that they would use the port first rather than complicate the build process with weird hosel weights.

Right you are. Took out a few screws and while they look the same, they are using different densities of material. Still only a few grams of weight. Not like the 20+ they got out of the CTP weights.
