Distance Control Problems. Looking for a Soft Putter.

I tend to struggle with distance control with my miss being too far. I need some putter recommendations for a soft putter that is hard to hit too far. Ive tried the Ping Ketsch, Scotty, and now EvnRoll but I hit them too far. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I would agree with the odyssey insert but best is to go with the new model that combines Toulon technology w White hot insert. Forgot the name of the putter but I own it and it’s crazy soft which I love.

I would look at the well putting mat or the puttout putting mat and the puttout tool. Those have helped my distance control considerably. Just a thought but a softer insert should feel softer but that doesn’t necessarily translate into less distance I wouldn’t think. That should be a stroke thing.

Get a lesson. Practice the right drills.

More likely your wrist are too active. Try putting with locked wrist. Not saying play with entirely locked wrist, but try it and see if you can dial in distance with 10-15 putts, might surprise you. If wrist are too active distance control is very difficult. Try a slight forward shaft lean, play with ball position, center and perhaps a ball forward of center. Let left hand lead the way without putter head swinging past it. With all that said, I am ham fisted too, lol. I have several Scotty Tei3’s that are my most used putters, very soft. Additionally, I prefer a soft feeling ball also, will never use a ‘distance’ ball if for no other reason cant stand the harsh feel off my putter. Video yourself from front view putting on phone, see if your wrist are breaking down. Assuming so, there is your distance control leak. Once I read Bobby Clampetts book, ‘The Impact Zone’, my putting really improved. Ironically the book is mainly about full swing, but really hammers in the forward shaft lean and quiet wrist, section on putting and chipping, but looks like it was mainly to take these fundamentals into full swing.

Softest putter I own, Scotty Tei3’s. This one I had deep milled insert, makes it even softer. Torrey Rat Golf in California restored this Ebay find, Scotty Del Mar.

A softer insert will not solve your problem. It’s a technique issue.

 

A softer insert will change the sound and “feel” of impact, but will not directly help your distance control.

 

Most people actually feel a softer insert actually makes the putter slightly “hotter” and makes the ball roll a bit quicker off the face.

You want soft, get yourself a Bettinardi FIT Face putter. But this will not solve a distance control issue. The type of ball you use will also factor into how soft the putter feels.

You don't need a "softer" putter. You need a putter that you feel gives you (and your brain) the proper feedback to translate your stroke into creating the right amount of energy for the distance required in each putt.

A lot of times when a putter feels "soft", that will translate (in some people's brain) that you need to hit the putt harder than you really have to.

You just need to find a putter that feels comfortable for you................................and then PRACTICE with it.

The old saying......"Practice makes perfect" hits the nail on the head when it comes to putting.

The Odyssey Microhinge is like hitting the ball with a pillow. You also may want to try a different weighted putter. But you may want to invest in a good training aid instead, that helped me a lot. Best of luck!

You may be misunderstanding what is meant by a soft putter. A soft insert is only going to change the ball speed by a couple percent at most. Probably less than that. Not enough to matter at all for your problem.

Just learn a ten yard and a twenty yard stroke with a Ball you like.

That may take 30/50/70 practice putts or more, but that is a simple solution.

You just need to learn an Automatic Stroke and maybe a Shoulder Rock instesd of a Big Stroke ?

Ive gone down this road too, couple extra thoughts you might have not considered... I would try a lighter weight putter. Seems counter to what you are thinking but could give you a better feel and speed control.

 

Also getting a counter balance grip or heavier grip could put more weight in your hands and help with distance control. I know Edel does this with their fittings when trying to get distance control dialed in.

Sounds as if you need a fitting. I don't think a softer insert will do what you want it to do. I'd focus on head weight and shaft, and counterbalancing. Whenever I have distance issues, I go back to my Edel (custom fit).

Wilson 8803 and a s*** ton of reps. Any putt over 12-15 feet just try and stop it in a two foot circle. There's no science to putting imho, just feel and experience. I always liked the story of tiger practicing stopping balls on the foul line in Stanford's basketball gym to get ready for his first trip to Augusta. Find your own version and That'll fix your distance issues good :)

It's funny, I was about to start a thread on putter MOI as it relates to distance putting. I used blades for years, but struggled with hitting putts way past. Switching to a mallet (Evnroll ER5) I rarely hit it too far anymore, but am more likely to hit it not far enough. Today in GG I tried the ER10, their highest-MOI model, and found the effect even more pronounced. Putts went straight as the dickens but it took a fairly emphatic stroke to get it to the hole once past 10-15 feet. I was kinda tempted, despite it being ugly as a bucket full of rectums, but not sure I could get a 30-footer to the hole. Switching to an ER2 or the like, it seemed again that it took more care to modulate the effort and not roll it too far. I theorize that, for me, the rotation of the face with a blade adds pop to the stroke, which, if you're good, is accounted for with feel and artistry. A higher MOI design resista or at leaat does not encourage this rotation, so there's less pop and the 6-foot comebackers are less likely, at least if you have hands of stone like me. But if you're faced with a 50-footer you'd better shower down on it.

To the OP, please quantify what "too far" means - one foot, three feet, ten feet beyond the hole?

 

And what are you playing now? What grip is on it? What ball do you play?

 

There's many great suggestions in the preceding posts, but you could easily go down a rabbit hole, purchase a new putter, and be right back at the same place with distance control issues once the honeymoon wears off.

 

And I get it if you've lost confidence in the current flatstick & just want [need] to buy a new putter.

I use a Pro V1 ball and sometimes a Z star. My putting isn't all together atrocious sometimes its not that bad its just on longer putts I tend to over roll em. Im looking for a putter I can put a good thwack on it and it wont go too far.

You didn't mention what style of putter you use, but if you use a blade I suggest you try a mallet. I don't find that insert material does as much for distance control as the way the toe closes and how that works with your stroke.
