Hawkshead in South Haven. Just played it on Thursday, its in good shape, especially tee to green. Very generous off the tee.

Ravines in Saugatuck is another option. I've never played it, but it gets high marks from guys here.

From Grand Haven, Grand Rapids is pretty close and there is The Mines and Thornapple. I am not a huge fan of Grand Haven Golf Club, but some people like it. If you are a member of a Private Club, you can probably get on Muskegon CC which is fantastic.

Anything decent around grand haven? We're going there next year

Grand Haven Golf Club is a nice layout in my opinion. Forested, not too tight, big greens. Maintenance is not top tier but is adequate and the greens tends to be slow.

Macatawa Legends on the north side of Holland is pretty much the opposite - open links style, well maintained, fast greens. I'm not a big fan of the design, but it's challenging especially if the wind is up.

The Meadows at Grand Valley State University would be another solid option that's within 20-25 minutes. I haven't played there lately but it's well regarded.

If you're going to drive to Grand Rapids, I'd skip the Mines and Thornapple personally and go to Pilgrim's Run. It's about an hour from Grand Haven (versus 40 min to the Mines, 50 to Thornapple).

Agree with knickerbocker that if you can get on Muskegon CC, do it. Ross course, always in fantastic shape.

Sticking with the private idea I recommend Wuskowhan Players Club.

I played ravines for the first time on Saturday and it was awesome. Highly recommend it, my brother and sister both said they preferred it over hawks head.

I’ve always enjoyed Lake Michigan Hills GC, but don’t know what type of condition it’s in these days. They use to host western am qualifying back when it was at Point of Woods...speaking of, you might be able to get out there if you inquire. Enjoy!

I don’t know for certain, but when I go on their website I can see they are offering stay and play packages for non-members as well as 2018 trial membership packages. Which leads me to believe they wouldn’t turn away a paying guest(s) for an afternoon round - just speculation tho

Thanks for the tip. I might try and get on it.

Can't go wrong with Hawkshead or ravines IMO. Haven't made it to HH this year. Played ravines 8/19. Only bad words for is it seems they've given up trying to keep good sand in the traps. Also, they had problems with tee boxes. Still good grass to hit from just a bit of an eye sore behind you on some of the tees. "Normal" white tee distances were pretty bad so they were up and it played pretty short. Didn't check the blue/black tees much but the ones I saw were normal. Rest of the course was in solid shape.

Played and enjoyed both. They were punching the tee boxes on Ravines the day I played. Loved the Ravines layout. Hawkshead was pretty awesome as well. The only issue I had was a lack of familiarity with the course. I put some tee shots in some wierd spots.
