I Finally Found the Perfect Driving Iron!

And it’s not even an iron :)

Like a lot of us I’ve been trying to find the perfect club to fill the gap between Fairway wood and 4 iron, it’s a tough spot to fill. Last week I pulled the S400 shaft from my TMB 3 iron as I’d like to try something else in that head because it didn’t turn out to be the club I was hoping it would be. So I decided to throw the S400 in a 19* 910H head I had laying around just for fun and to see how it would play and all I can say is Wow!! It’s everything I thought the TMB 3 iron was going to be, I was shocked. It was firing the low, straight bullets I was hoping to find in the TMB head and if you tee it up a hair you can launch it to the moon and the ball just flies dead straight. Why did I wait so long to put a heavy steel shaft into a hybrid? I just wanted to share my findings for anyone struggling to fill this spot in the bag. Have a great day everyone :)

I used to do that in the older hookier heads ... now I find 95-105g to be the sweet spot for me in hybrids

The 910 had a BlueBoard 80 in it Originally and it was definitely hook city, even cut down to 3 iron length. I haven’t tried anything in the 95-105 range for graphite, I guess I’ll have to try it out. Thanks :)

I usually have 2 hybrids. One that matches my iron shafts, the other a heavier graphite for fairways.

I always hit the steel shafted hybrids much straighter, but not as high and soft as the graphite.

I’ve just dug out my old G10 hybrid from the garage that has a steel KBS hybrid shaft in it. Maybe going old school is the answer!

I have a tour issued P790 UDI 17* with PX 6.5 and just got a TEE CB ProH 21* with Recoil F5. They're gonna slug it out for a spot in the bag. My money is on the UDI.

That should be a good battle, I’ll be curious to see the results. Those P790’s are nice looking clubs. I really thought the TMB was gonna be the Final piece for me, I just didn’t hit it very well outside of the simulator, who knows why? It’s really windy around here at times so the low bullet off the tee is must have shot in the bag, that’s the only reason I got the TMB in the first place. I’m just happy I’ve finally found a club that hits it well :)

only issue with the 790 UDI is the head is SUUUUPER LIGHT. It's not so pretty when it has a roll of lead tape on it, But it does make me feel like a gamer when it's in the bag!

They should really have adjustable weights on these hollow irons, the TMB swing weight was low too and it even had a tip weight in it, I found it when I pulled the shaft. Lead tape is all good but once you add more than 4-6g I find you start to feel the shaft flex change, even on steel shafts, it does looks cool though :)

I would have had to add 12g to the TMB if I wanted it at D2, but I do play my irons a half inch short from stock. It would have played like an R300 or softer with 12g added haha.

Winner after 1 round this morning: P790 UDI. The TEE ProH is good, but the feel off the face of the 790 is just so good.

I play my P790 UDI an inch short of standard, so basically its P790 3i length. Might give up a few yards, but i don't care. it feels awesome.

I used to have an i15 Hybrid with a C-Taper S+ 125g shaft in it. Worked in theory but the shaft was wayyy too heavy.

I’ve basically been doing construction work since I was 14, with a lot of it being concrete work and framing. So to me anything that weighs less than a 20lbs Sledge Hammer feels light. Even when I was framing I used a 28oz. Estwing, none of those little 20/22/24 oz. hammers. I love heavy clubs, usually the heavier the club, the better I swing it :)

Same here, My TMB and my 910 are 3 iron length (-1/2”) to match my irons. I’d rather be in the fairway then 10y father in the rough or worse :)

You’ll be my first message if she doesn’t pair well with her next shaft, it’s gonna be tough for her to beat this steel hybrid though I think. I honestly can’t see the S300 I put in the TMB making much/any difference at all, but I had to at least try it, It works beautifully for me in the rest of my irons.

And it's not even an iron :)

Like a lot of us I've been trying to find the perfect club to fill the gap between Fairway wood and 4 iron, it's a tough spot to fill. Last week I pulled the S400 shaft from my TMB 3 iron as I'd like to try something else in that head because it didn't turn out to be the club I was hoping it would be. So I decided to throw the S400 in a 19* 910H head I had laying around just for fun and to see how it would play and all I can say is Wow!! It's everything I thought the TMB 3 iron was going to be, I was shocked.

I literally just laughed out loud reading this, because before I read it, I was going to create a new thread about how I just put a DG s300 in my Titleist 910h that I had laying around, and it is now my go to "driving iron" on tight holes where driver isn't the smart play. By the way, mine is 21*, not 19*.

Couldn't believe how accurate it is and it gives me a nice baby draw that I can count on 99% of the time.

Anyways, just thought it was funny that you literally did the same thing; 1. Grabbed the old 910h head that has been laying around 2. Put a DG shaft in it 3. Put it straight in the bag.

Can a normal iron shaft be used for this sort of thing? I would consider it with one of the M1 hbyrids I have comin.

Great minds think alike Sir!! That’s pretty cool that we both tried the exact same experiment at the same time with the same results :)

It’s actually making my want to try putting steel shafts in my 815 Bertha Driver/3 wood heads now, they’re just sitting there on the shelf not getting used as of now. I wonder how an S300/400 would work in them? Or would you have to go to X100 in a wood to get a similar feel to an S300 in an iron?

I recently put my i15 17* back in the bag with a Project X 6.0 steel shaft. I forgot how good of a hybrid combo this was.
