MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

So I love watching tournaments from different courses that I've never heard of and/or getting travel ideas of places I might want to go in the future. But this event in the Bahamas, every round I've watched in the last few years of this event has been 25-30 mph winds - or higher - and the course mostly looks narrow as heck. Nothing about watching this has made me want to go there - and we've enjoyed a couple different Sandals n the past. But this looks like an absolutely miserable resort course to play.

I wish the Korn Ferry did more Sunday - Wednesday events though, its kind of nice to have golf on during the week and I'm guessing would get more eyeballs on their events.

every company has to market their product but not every company draws the same lines in the same places. not even close.

the titleist t300 irons were confusing. they had all these different clubs with different markings including one that included the number of degrees. they made an awful hollow type sound.

metal baseball spikes made me feel like such a baller (before i sat on the bench due to my lack of skill)

Got mine today too, very comfy. With the weather coming up, may have to hit Pinecrest next week to test these out.

I can't play in spikeless. I've tried several times, but I slip all over the place. Trues seem like they have some of the least aggressive nubs of all the spikeless options, so I wouldn't stand a chance.

I broke the seal on my winter golf break, and hit up Waverly with City yesterday. It felt great to be out on the course. Being able to play in short sleeves was the icing on the cake. We came darn close to getting all 18 holes in, but settled for skipping 16-17 in the end. I still don't anticipate playing much until the season starts, so I can focus on building up vacation time at work, and exercising to build up my resilience. But I'm definitely jonesing HARD for golf again. Hopefully the occasional round will crop up, and I'll be able to at least start ramping up some practice at home.

Fabb wanted to play for something and I was game. I've been playing a ton (and playing pretty well), but he hadn't been playing at all. So we played a buck a hole with junk and carryover.

He came out and went birdie, par, par, par, birdie, par, par, so yeah.

I finished the front winning a 3 hole carry on 8, then got a bird on 9, but he came out and won 10, 11, 12, and 13. It was a rough day.

We could have finished 18 if we weren't behind a slow threesome all day which became a slow twosome on hole 12. They were in no hurry.

Fabb, please share your recent handicap "issues" so everyone can point and laugh. Don't need to bring names or places into it. It's really astounding, though.

Oh, boy.

I wanted to play an MSGA event or two last year, which requires you have an active handicap at a MSGA member club. I obliged, and established a handicap at REDACTED.

Fast-forward to about a week ago, and I went to look up my index on the MSGA site, once they had updated to WHS-compliant indexes. I no longer show up in their database. Great.

I figured maybe whoever manages the roster for REDACTED had pruned me from the club, so that they could collect their handicap fee bounty for 2020 if I wanted back in. I sent a polite email to the shop, asking if I could call in to pay up for 2020, so they could turn me back on in their system.

Their response: Handicaps for MSGA are valid from mid March to mid November. Scores in are not valid in the other months. All handicaps have been deactivated. You can activate now if you would like but handicap season starts mid March.

Me:

I don't want to get into an argument with the dingus over email, so I respond that I'll be out there sometime in the next week, and will just settle up with them then. I get back a "Sounds good."

Fast-forward a little more, and I show up at REDACTED one day, and head into the shop. The guy behind the counter isn't the dingus that answered my email. It's some guy I've never seen before. I told him I'd like to pay my handicap fee for 2020. Without missing a beat, new dingus starts telling me how handicaps are inactive in MD until March. Blah, blah, blah, toeing the apparent company line.

Me:

https://media.giphy.com/media/wODxPdYYSq31C/giphy.gifI'm at irritated enough at this point, given I showed up at REDACTED to pay my fee and get it resolved, that I'm willing to back and forth a little. Despite my best efforts to explain how the handicap system works to new dingus, he won't budge. He won't even take my money at all. He said he'll talk to the GM and get me an answer, if I can stop back in the shop in a bit. Fat chance, donkey.

I don't know how they're under the impression that handicaps cease to exist during the posting off-season. I sent an email directly to the GM this morning, so we'll see what happens.

Well they are really taking "off season" seriously LOL. I dont understand - so no one had access to the system at all? I thought in MD you would still have full access to the system - you're just not posting rounds played in a state where they were currently in the off season.

Exactly, DC. If you're in Maryland you still need access for

1) in case you play out of state so that you can see what your index is.

2) If you play out of state, you still post those scores.

They took "inactive season" to the point of "deactivate handicap system for the club". I don't even know how/why a club has that capability. My MSGA cap is behaving exactly as it should (well, the transition has some issues, but at least my handi still exists).

Yeah. I tried to reactivate/renew this week via phone and got told I had to come into the shop (40 minutes from home or anywhere else I am on a regular basis). After reactivating by phone for the last decade. It's not the biggest deal, but come one. I play at my "club" 10 times a year, but frequently won't make it out there until March or April. Annoying.

Right, thats what I was thinking of, if you play a match out of state you would still need a current index - even if you cant post rounds played in MD.

I'm a little surprised, it seems like something that GHIN/USGA or whoever monitors those things now would keep an eye on. Oh, an entire course just deactivated all of their handicaps?

Maryland clubs have a long history of shutting down the system over the winter. It was habit from around the turn of the millennium when there was second hand computer running the program. And it worked because MD was out of season anyway. (And if I recall correctly, so was VA back then, so little chance you were posting anyway.) Some older clubs just haven't moved into modern times. Or bothered to understand the new rules. And believe that club members at their club ONLY play rounds at their club, so during the offs season, no need for the computer to be on. Antiquated.
