I played Mountain Branch today and enjoyed the course. They had aerated the greens/fairways on Monday but the course was in decent condition. I had to stop on #18 from the fairway at +6 from the Black tees. The afternoon storm rolled through and cleared the course. I shot 40 on the front nine with 21 putts. I think I may need City to help me with putting a little bit....

Without reading that, would you ever have guessed this would be in there?

"Winter hat with shades" is not a thing, unless you're deliberately trying to get punched in the teeth by @baddomes

I love this quote.

If you try to wear your sunglasses under your winter hat, it won’t fit properly and will look strange, too.

Because wearing sunglasses over your winter hat doesn't look strange at all.

I played golf with my dad a few weeks ago and he was grilling me about not wearing sunglasses.  As a soulless individual I’m predisposed to macular degeneration, and should be wearing eye protection whenever I’m outside.  I’m trying to balance looking like Zach Johnson now vs having no vision in 40 years,

If I believe my IG Feed, shades have gotten much more stylish, functional and are priced within reason.

But I'm currently rocking a promotional pair of Casamigos that I got for free.  After I lost my last pair of "nice" sunglasses, I swore I'd never spend large again.

I would assume that "eye damage" comes from UV rays, like skin damage, and if you're wearing a hat that shades your eyes. you're all right.

Like, it's not just being bright and outdoors that is damaging but direct UV rays.

When I had my lasik a few years ago, they told me to always wear sunglasses when I was outside - even if it was one of the lighter lenses and even if I was playing when its cloudy. I think they told me something like "theres a reason you can still get a sunburn at the beach if the sun isnt directly out" - but I tapped out, I just agreed to do it and didn't really care about the scientific reasons. So I've got the lighter/regular prizm lenses for if its overcast and then the dark golf ones I'll wear other times.

There have always been stylish sunglasses, but for some reason 99% of golfers insist on wearing the least stylish sunglasses, which is fine if you're not worried about style.

If you ARE worried about style, there are plenty of sunglasses out there that you can play golf in.

Also do not allow the fact that they are women's sunglasses keep you from trying them on.  Women get better sunglasses design than men #equality

I wear stylishly awful sunglasses when I golf but only b/c that is the only thing that fits under a normal curved rim baseball cap....wish I could pull off the flat cap/aviators look on the course but a bald 40 year old man just doesn't look quite right in that look.

You're a sun hat guy now.

New sunglasses options have presented themselves.

Hi guys, can you recommend an instructor for a complete beginner in the Turf Valley area? My buddy tried Damon Lucas but their schedules are tough to sync up. Anyone heard of George Rogers from Anne Arundel golf park?

I recommend Jim Kardash at Anne Arundel golf park.  I took lessons from him a couple years ago and liked him.  He's also rated as one of the top instructors in MD and is reasonably priced.

Diagnosed with  Retina damage (forgot the term) from years of tennis. Never play without sunglasses.

I'll throw a recommendation for Mark Russo at Nighthawk, he's the guy I've been working with on a regular basis this year. Highly recommended.

There wasn't a question posed.  There was you assuming a hat is enough, and aiyyer saying he has eye damage.

I guess the question is: does a hat protect your eyes enough from harmful UV?  The hat will block some/most UVs.  Sunglasses will block more.  For some people, the hat might be enough.  For others, not.  You probably won't find out which you are until you're 65+.  If you have a family history of issues you should probably be careful even if it feels like overdoing it.

I actually didn't know any numbers on the reflection part, so it's interesting to look up.  The WHO is a little bit of a touchy subject at the moment, but here's what they have to say on their site:

Quote

Many surfaces reflect UV radiation and add to the overall UV levels you experience. While grass, soil or water reflect less than 10 per cent of incident UV radiation, sand reflects about 15 per cent, and sea foam about 25 per cent. Fresh snow is a particularly good reflector and almost doubles a person's UV exposure.

So ballpark it as reflected light being 5-15% of the direct exposure when on the golf course.  Not huge, but enough to matter when it adds up over decades.

I wear a hat 100% of the time and never even considered that it would give you enough protection. It is shading your eyes some of the time, at the right angles and such, but definitely not all of the time. I guess post-lasik I just got hypersensitive to protecting my eyes so wearing sunglasses even on overcast days could be a bunch of bunk for all I know.

I grew up on the water, worked every summer during high-school and college in a boatyard or on a boat.  I've just always worn both when I am outside.  Even pre-lasik, my eyes were super light-sensitive.

on the water, I always wear shades. I think my eyeglasses have UV protection even thought they're not shaded.

#Scotland2021

Obviously, our planning hit a minor snag.  At the present time, we are not allowed in Scotland without a 14 day quarantine.  That being said, here are preliminary numbers from Hidden Links for an April 2021 itinerary:

Flying into Edinburgh- stay is at Ardgowan Hotel.

Day 1: St. Andrews- Jubilee

Day 2: St. Andrews- New

Day 3: Carnoustie

Day 4: Crail

Day 5: Kingsbarns

Day 6: Try for the Ballot at St. Andrews

Day 7: Leave

6 nights accomodation, 6 rounds of golf, Breakfast included.  Transfer from airport, Driver to Crail, Carnoustie, and Kingsbarns included.

Price: $2751.37 per person.

Airfare:  Virgin Atlantic to Edinbugh non stop currently running about $1450.  Air Canada from BWI to EDI with a stop in Paris (Ah, Paris!) running approx $900-$1000.

OR

#BandonDunes2021

April 2021 rates for golf: $175 with a $90 replay rate per day.

Lodging: Lily Pond 2 bed units running at $330 ($165 per man per day) or

4 BR Grove Cottage (sleeps 8 I THINK) $1600 per night April rates

5 day Bandon Golf: $875 for 1 round a day + Lily Pond $825 = $1700.

Airfare from BWI to SFO to OTH (North Bend Oregon) currently running at $420 (its a sign!)

My Thoughts

1) I almost feel like if we can't GUARANTEE the Old Course, it would be a letdown.  This is assuming we're even ALLOWED over there in April in the first place.  If we do the walkup/ballot- then we're going off as onesome and twosomes IF we get off.  This is my current understanding of things.  But then I think if we ARE allowed to travel- would there be crowd, or would there not?  Maybe it wouldn't be an issue.

2)I have no desire to play Carnoustie.

3) But I  gotta play Kingsbarns.

4) Airfare to Bandon is so cheap I can't help but think if you're going to do Bandon this may be the year.  I ran it a couple times and kept getting the same number.  Feel like #Scotland2022 or #Scotland2023 may be the way to go, but if it opens up.....hmmmm.
