It happened on my front porch.

 

1. Bought a club head through here, member shipped immediately

2. The package spent 10 days "in transit", and was scheduled for delivery on 9/10

3. I checked the tracking yesterday morning and it was noted as delivered, front porch, on 9/9 at 7PM. This alone is ridiculous, I was home making dinner and there was not even a knock. I also have a side gate that packages can get dropped in.

4. I gave it until the evening to see if it was tagged wrongly as delivered, but walking back from a shop up the block I saw a box ripped open on the sidewalk that was addressed to me.

Ahh okay I missed the porch part. Its like they were walking by and saw the truck drop it off and grabbed it. My friends' car window was smashed in Tuesday night and ransacked. Desperation is high right now I guess

Since no one else has, I shall give you the OCGolfRick version of the CC.  First congrats to the winners: MossyFerguson24 for gross with a 75, and Meat Chase? (great WRX handle if he doesn't have one.) with a scintillating net 69 (awesome!) for the Net division.  

Course was playing tough.  Blue tees were well back, and course was soft enough that you didn't get a whole lot of rollout.  Thick rough as well where they've not been able to mow.  I played Whites, which I was thankful I chose. I hit a great drive on #2, and...had 189 left, which I promptly hit right into the trash to score a quad bogey.  Go Rick. 

Was paired with Gscjr, MeatAsh, and Female.  We got along well even though none of us played well. GSCJr struggled with the driver, but almost had a hole in one on the par 3 #13, leaving him an 18 inch putt for birdie.  Ash eagled #9 and ALMOST eagled #12, just grazing the left lip for tap in bird.  Some blowup holes cost him, he really could have had a shot at it. Female can flat out play. Former high school player, great looking swing with driver and off the tee. Struggled chipping, but when you only play 2x-3x a year I guess you can expect that. If she played more often she's in the 70's to low 80's easily.  

I really like the course and layout, would love to play it again when its drier.

Great weekend of golf. 

 

TLDR: played well in the Hive CC at Blue Mash, shot even par 72 on Sunday at my home course.

 

Saturday

Been thinking about this round for a long time.  I played hurt last year and put up an 89 at Worthington from the tips.  I've been playing really well recently and wanted to improve on that.  With a stacked competition featuring two legit plus handicaps, I wasn't under any impression that I could win with my best versus their best... but this is golf.  Stuff can happen.  Figured I needed to be under par/around par to have a chance.  Conditions were brutal.  Course was beat up from recent weather.  Thankfully, the greens were rolling decent.  Rough was thicccc and and long and wet (insert joke).  Chipping/pitching around the greens was very very difficult... I saw more duffs and flubs from excellent golfers than I've seen all year. The uncertainty of how the club was going to go thru the rough as well as how the ball was going to react led to some atypical results.  Blue Mash isn't the longest course we play, but they had us tipped out on every single box, until 16, which played 1 up.  Fairways were still sodden, so not a lot of roll.  Guys were getting their drivers to back up on some holes.  Wind was opposite the normal.  And, we played it down.  Playing length on Saturday was likely the longest conditions we'll play for some time.  Rating from the back tees was 73.0/134 which pales in comparison to Worthington's 74.7/145... but it was much more difficult this year than last year when we at least got some rollout.

 

The gist: Blue Mash bared its teeth.  If you haven't played there before, the first 4 holes are a brisk slap in the face.  First hole: par 4, 449 (played into the wind).  2nd hole: par 4, 452 (played into the wind).  3rd hole: par 4, 478 (played downwind).  4th hole: par 3, 206 (played crosswind).  5 was no bargain either: par 5, 580 (played into the wind).  I mean, good effin luck.  I went Driver/hybrid on 1.  Driver/3w on 2.  Driver/duffed 3w/wedge on 3.  Hybrid on 4.  Driver/3w/wedge on 5.  With some good putting, I made it through that stretch at +1, which was as well as I could have played it.  Parred 6, couldn't get up and down on 7 from an ideal spot but with tough rough, bad swing with a wedge on 8 (bogey), by-the-book par 5 on 9.  So, at the turn I'm sitting at +3, and I'm thinking... it could have been maybe 1 or 2 better, but it could have been a helluva lot worse.  I don't think I'm leading, but I'm not dead.  Proceed to duff-hook my drive on 10 (bogey) and bail way left on 11.  I'm out of the bunker there, but have an odd lie to a green that's above me, running away from me, and has water on the other side.  Squeeze a sphincter-tightening flop out that stays on and 2 putt for a pretty good bogey.  Missed an opportunity on the next short-ish par 5, but save a great par on the following par 3 (after 2 horrid shots) by rolling in a 30 footer.  Catch a break by having the ball kick off a tree onto the fairway on the 14th, but came up just short and again failed to get up and in with a pisspoor tentative pitch shot and just missed the lengthy par putt.  I catch up with the first group and find out how the plus-caps are doing... just above par.  Sigh.  Hit a heely cut into the fairway, then stripe a 4i from the mud to 15 feet.  Came up short with my last-gasp birdie putt, which was really disappointing.  Break out the flask on 16 tee, smash my best drive of the day, but leave the 6i right and (again!) can't get up and down.  Best shot of the day was on 17tee, a 4i from 200 to 10 feet.  Left that one short as well.  18 was 550 playing downwind, and I went Driver-3w to equal but left of the front edge.  Got up and in for my lone birdie of the day.  Winner was Mossy at 75, the Sheriff at 76, then me at 77.  Great day and I felt very good about how I played overall.  Had some chances I wish I could have converted.  It's not often that I wake up feeling nervous to play golf... gotta relish those times and embrace it.  Looking forward to taking on those guys in the Club Championship again next year. 

 

 

 

Sunday

Had a bit of a golf hangover from the previous day, unsurprisingly. I was playing with a couple good guys, 90s shooters.  We were enjoying the beautiful weather and deserted course due to the NFL starting up again.  I'm plodding along, not doing much.  Par 1-3, bogey 4, par 5, then get going with a 40 footer on 6 that rattles the pin and stays in for bird.  Big drive on 7 left me an iron in and I stuff it to 15 feet.  Just miss the eagle but tap in for B2B tweeters.  Par the tough 8th and then have 6 feet for bird on 9... DCFS.  The worst.  Still, I'm feeling good, I know where I'm at and I'm looking forward to the back because I typically play it pretty well.  Bad start on 10 with a needless bogey, good birdie look on 11 that just misses, another good look on 12 that lips out. Big downer, because there are 2 toughies coming up.  The 13th requires a layup off the tee due to a crossing water hazard and I do ok with the tee ball, but bail right on the approach and can't get up and down from the sand.  the 14th is a long par 3 slightly uphill and I am happy to be on the front then completely misread my approach putt and have 8 feet.  At this point, I'm +1 and there really aren't 2 good birdie chances coming in. Happy to pour that one in for the par save.  Smash a driver down the next hole and have 230 into the green (par 5), hit a bad 3w that catches tree leaves and scuttles into a bunker about 60 yards short and right of the green.  Had some overhanging branches.  This was another Big Moment.  Semi-purposefully blade a GW that was 1 yard from being perfect, then get up and down from a squirrely lie from the front of the green to save par.  Good par on the par 3 16th, then had a wonderful look for birdie on 17 that kissed the cup and stayed out.

 

So, it all came down to 18.  I knew I needed a birdie to shoot even.  Par 4, that goes straight up a hill on the approach.  Laid back with a hybrid off the tee (so I had a flat lie) then with 127 in to a front flag, played a beauty of a cut 8i that nestled 5 feet past the hole.  Downhill, left to right slider... rolled it end over end for a no doubter 72.

 

I did the math.  It's been 15 1/2 years since my last even par round.  If I am to be frank, I never thought I'd have another one.  Until this year, when I rediscovered my game.  Had lots of close calls leading up to it.  Knowing I needed birdie to do it, and then doing it is a great feeling that I'll never forget.

I may be bordering on crazy town here, but watching the latest edition of No Laying Up Wild World of Golf really piqued my interest in learning to play lefty.  I think it would be fun, and certainly bring a sense of wonder, trying to learn the game all over again.

This weather today is absolutely money. It's so nice to have some windows open and cool dry air to breathe.

 

It was nice to get out to the old club over the weekend, but I really should have taken the extra time off. I tweaked something in my neck a couple weekends ago trying to launch a wave runner and I've had some nagging stiffness/tingling when I move the wrong way. Looks like the greens haven't had the best summer at SPCC but the fairways looked much better than years past, and the course has some neat new looks since they've stopped mowing portions of the property.

I shot my worst differential since 2016.  Painful.  On the practice range I toe shanked one with driver and showed CJ the mark for proof.  Never really recovered from that.  All of my triples or worse:

• On 5 I lost 2 off the tee and made a 3rd ball bogey for a 10.  Hitting 5 off the tee when you just lost the last two drives is a tough feeling.  After this hole I figured I had no chance unless I played great the rest of the way.
• On 7 I flared my drive right and then hit my recovery in to a spot I had to take an unplayable.  This is where I knew I had zero chance.
• On 12 I hit 2 in the water to make triple.  This is where I figured I was coming in last place.
• On 14 I hit a tee shot left, screwed up a recovery shot, and flubbed two chips.
• On 17 I hit two in the water for an 8. 
• On 18 I hit the cart path left and never found it in the tall grass.

I also 3 putted for double twice in there.  Topped two in a row to make double on 2.  Second ball par on 16 for double.

 

The swing was really bad and then I was trying to fix it a different way each time since it wasn't getting better.  I had a round earlier this year where I played with one swing the entire round.  This was the complete opposite.  Back to the drawing board.

 

I did get to play with two Hive guys that I've never played with before, so it was a fun time at least.

In spite of the pandemic, 2020 has been a really good year for so many in the thread in terms of golf improvement/achievements.  DC, Fabb and City shot under par or even.  Lots of negative differentials from everyone.  Guys playing well overall and in winning at their home club tourneys.  Plenty dropping their caps to record-low levels.  Great to see.
