Owen is ALWAYS giving lessons. I think that's a good testament to his ability as a teacher. You can hit off grass as well.

If you have irons made of soft metal, get those freaking things checked! No wonder I had gapping issues. This was especially noticeable on my PW and 50 degree.

I learned that lesson once when I played forged clubs.  I'm playing cast clubs now, so I'm not paying attention to it any longer.  I recall that the clubs I used most at the range were the ones most bent out of shape, and I started rotating club there more than I was doing at the time.

Does anyone here play a 'soft ball'? Looking at Titleist TruFeel and Taylormade Tour Response or Soft Response. For as long as they were made I played a Titleist NXT that worked well for me, specifically around the green. It was fine off of the tee even though I have never been a long hitter.  I feel like my SS has slowed even more in the last couple of years and I haven't found a ball I like tee to green.

Last winter, I played the Srixon Q-Star Tour and liked it.  It's a 3 piece urethane cover ball and you can find them on sale for $20-$25 a dozen.  In the spring / summer, I switched to the Z-Star, but probably will go back to the Q-Star again this winter.  The Q-Star is a 72 compression ball, while the Z-Star is 90 and the Z-Star XV is 102.

According to the site that shall not be named

A soft ball is a slow ball; it’s that simple. If you are playing a “soft” golf ball, it’s probably costing you distance off the tee (unless you swing under 85 MPH) and spin around the green.

A growing segment within the market, the soft (or low compression) segment of the market includes familiar balls like Callaway Chrome Soft, Wilson DUO, Bridgestone Tour B RXS, and Titleist AVX.

Firmer balls are faster, generally longer, and as an added benefit to many golfers, they spin more around the green.

We get that some of you love soft feel, but the reality is that the only golfers likely to see real performance benefits from low compression balls are high speed, high spin players. That’s probably not you.

The site that shall not be named also said:

"In general, when you can, you want to avoid severe temperature shifts as it can cause balls to degrade faster. We haven’t tested it, but certainly here in NY there are guys who switch to softer balls in the winter (when rounds often start below 30°) because their normal ball feels too firm. From an actual performance perspective, it’s not something we’ve looked at. I’ll ask a few of the ball guys."

Here's some weather nerds talking about golf ball distance in cold weather:

Q star is a really good ball, I play it the majority of rounds and really like its performance and price point.  Durable too.

The tour type of ball feel like rocks when I hit them. I just don't compress them enough. I do like a Pro V1 from under about 80 yards but off of the tee I think I lose distance. I may try the Tour Response since it seems to be a 'mid' when it comes to feel. Maybe the Q-Star too. I try to play several rounds before picking something to stick with although there have been many that I rejected after a few holes.

Not a lot of golf for me the last week or so. Leave for Bandon in 10 days, definitely resting up the back for 8 rounds / 4 days. Yoga and spin classes, thats been it.

Anyone that watched Fauda or Homeland should definitely check out Tehran on AppleTV. I think its $4/mo but I bought an ipad that came with a free year of it. Watched the first episode last night - its fantastic.

We'll want a full Bandon recap.  We have a gaggle planning a Nov 2021 trip so we'll be interested in your trip!

I'll check out Tehran.  We still have a few months left on our free year subscription for buying an iPhone last year.  Ted Lasso is pretty good too on Apple TV.

Awesome! I know its not cheap or easy to do but definitely do it sooner rather than later. I booked over a year ahead of time and tee times were already filling up and the Lodge rooms were already completely sold out. But especially if you have a larger group and need more than one tee time, dont wait. You have to put down a deposit equal to one nights lodging and your first day of golf per person - so I know the number of people willing to do that is not huge.

So much for the forecast, it rained for maybe 15 out of 18 holes today and was just sloggy all around. The greens crew must have used pry bars to aerate because there are still a bunch of spots not yet healed, and the reseeded fairways are taking forrevverrrr to become playable.

I have a case of the tops-long game is in the dumpster right now, thankfully I can still putt. Lots of great bogey saves, I guess?

One round in using the Taylormade Tour Response ball and so far so good. It didn't feel that soft off of the driver although it did sound different. Nice response around the green, felt good chipping and putting. Good spin for me, the ball checked nicely when it was supposed to. A urethane ball seems to help even old hacks like me.

Waverly is a course that I really enjoyed but it is just too far to get to for me. I remember it being in really good shape when I played there though.

Went out to hit balls for ten minutes last night before packing the clubs away to dropoff at ShipSticks this afternoon. Back seems to be healing up nicely, rotator cuff hasn't completely blown apart just yet. Rest this weekend. Bandon Tuesday.

How much is ShipSticks round trip from here to Bandon?  Any good coupon codes?  We may use ShipSticks for #bandon2021

ShipSticks periodically puts out discount codes.  And I think they'll pretty much always give a discount code for your first use of the service, but I may be wrong about that one.  I used it for Bandon.  It's a pain in the a$s of a trip, so not having to lug clubs around was a very welcome convenience.  I think it was maybe $150 round trip or something?  I could look back and get an exact number.

Oh yeah if you sign up they will send you a TON of coupon emails. The one I used was if you pay for express shipping on the way out, the return ground shipping is free. So I think I was in for $179 round trip - which was the one way express cost.

But usually around every holiday and every major they will have some sort of deal going on. Ground shipping was around $75 each way?

Thanks, sounds like ShipSticks is the way to go especially if we fly into North Bend.

I can't recommend ship sticks enough, especially if you are going through north bend. It is just so nice to show up to the resort with your clubs there. The bag will be right where the van drops you off. So nice!
