Hey guys, looks like I made it through my first winter in MD. Weather looks good for next week and I'm excited to start getting out there to some new courses. Last year I only played Waverly Woods, Blue Mash, and Hobbits Glen. I hear all of the nice courses are out toward Frederick, any recommendations on some good tracks to check out this year? What are some of you guys' favorite public/Semi-Private courses? cheers

Just my .02. Worthington, Whiskey and MD National are the best of the bunch. Again my opinion  Musket is over priced. I'm lucky I live within 10-15 minutes of Whiskey and Worthington.

I've not played with anyone from this thread but all they all seem like a good bunch.

IMHO Worthington is the best for the combination of challenge/conditions/price/service in the region. They do a great job.

What general area are you in? There are plenty of other decent courses around that are worth giving a try, it depends how far you are willing to travel.

Teed off yesterday at 10, and for whatever reason the frost delays and group cancellations made my threesome the first on course. We all played like crap but being able to get around in 3:20 really helps to keep you warm when it's 35 and windy.

Ah, yes. My favorite part of the season, when trying to make a full swing and my brain just goes "does not recognize, how do I do dis" for about 3 weeks.  I guess that's to be expected, but I was pleasantly surprised about my short game all day. I made a ton of great bogey saves and hit some touch shots that I couldn't hit a year ago.

I am in Howard County, close to Columbia. I have heard good things about Worthington, def looking to give it a run. I am not against traveling at all, I actually want to check out some of the courses in Northern VA and across the PA line this year. Have heard good things about Wyncote in PA

I actually played 18 @ Hobbits Glen course today. Course is still pretty dry, but it was good to get out. I love Blue Mash, one of my favorites in the immediate area, and Waverly is a good one to. I will have to check the others, looks like they are relatively close. thanks for the recommendations! If you ever need a 4th, give me a shout

First 18 of 2021 went MUCH better than the last 18 of 2020.

Last round of 2020 was at Worthingtonan was an out-and-out torture slog without a single par on the card leading to a 108 with @TheCityGame reminding me that "man, you hit it low left like every shot" after every single quack hook lol

First round of 2021, also at WoMan, was a pretty good ball striking round, albeit fairly horrific putting on the typical wintery greens, ending in an 84.

2020 round was off the blues and 2021 was off the whites and whites were WAYYYY in quite a few spots, probably playing about 500 or so yards shorter than normal.

Highlights were:

On hole 11 where tees were up by forward tee box - 226 to the flag - hit 3 wood - somehow ended up on the fringe just over the small front bunker. No idea how it ended up there since there's 0 chance it carried 220 in the air and even less of a chance that it would have stopped there if it did. Two-putted for a birdie.

On hole 13, hit a very solid driver over the bunkers on the left side - had about 235-240 and pulled 3 wood. Top/toe shanked it and it bumbled down about 60 yards - hit 6 iron from there and almost canned it for eagle - made the birdie putt.

Probably my FAVORITE highlight was not my own. @aiyyer had about 105 from the cabbage left of the path on the short par 4 hole 14. Hit the flagstick DEAD solid, had to have been low on the stick since it sounded like a gun shot and ricocheted about 25 yards straight backwards to the apron - you really hate to see it.

SO PUMPED for Bulle Rock on Saturday!!

You played great shaking off all that baby rust.

I bought my place in Feb 2004 and I remember that spring being crazy with them - cant believe its been that long.

Played 5 holes last night. Hit a couple balls on each, played some bunker shots. Didn't bother with much putting since the greens were pretty shaggy. But the shoulder held up pretty good, I was happy. I was also wearing shorts the second week in March which makes me happy too. The 770s feel so damn good on the ball, I may have to consider getting the 5/6/7 irons as well.

I wanted to put this question out here too.

Anyone walk Bulle Rock with a push cart? if so, how would you compare walkability of Bulle compared to say Worthington Manor?

Worthington is a favorite among everyone here, I think.  Whiskey Creek is great too, although not walkable IMHO.

Down in Virginia Laurel Hill is really good, and I liked Stonewall.  We played Raspberry Falls for the first time this year and I though it was very good (after reading some not so great reviews).

In DC you should check out East Potomac.  Not a great course, but the views of the Washington memorial are fabulous.

About the same. The transfers are a little longer on some holes. Lots of shortcuts if you carry.

The most equivalent thing to other people's work ethic is driving on the highway.  Anyone going faster than me is a manic, and anyone going slower than me is lazy.  Unless you are moving at the exact same pace as me, there's something wrong with you.

Walking in the city, and specifically down or up metro escalators, is where this also applies.

I spent about ten years commuting in the city by Metro and was always stunned by the number of people who just assumed standing on the left of an escalator was OK. Isn't this just a common sense rule of life? Whether its an escalator in the DC Metro or one in your local mall in bum-f America? Even if its your first time on an escalator I feel like you would look at the people around you and "get it". BUT they never did. In fact at one point Metro proposed - or maybe they actually did, its been a while - but the proposed spending money on an advertising campaign telling people to walk left, stand right.

Did the ranger warn you at the turn if you were one minute behind?

Unfortunately not.  We did let an older single play through our family foursome and he proceeded to shank two in a row off the tee box in front of us.  I had to refrain my smaller family members, and myself, from laughing.  🤫
