Lesson Learned, New isn't always better!

I play with very old clubs and new to me is a new grip. But that is the way I like it. Last year I got weak(no adventurous) and jumped on the Vokey bandwagon. They were never meant to replace anything, just give me more options depending on course, strategy etc. Well long story short I have hit them at the range several times but so far I don’t see anything spectacular enough to carry on the course. Maybe that will change as I am making tweaks to my swing? For now I guess you could say I’m keeping them in the “developmental league”. They sure look pretty though.

I had the opportunity to go hit my old G5's, G and the G400 on thelaunch monitor today. Used my G5 6 iron as that is equivalent in loft to the other two. What I discovered was interesting. Distance wise the G5 as similar in distance to the G, but had better spin rates. The G400 was better than both. The spin rate, launch angle and distance all superior to the other two irons. The G400 was 7-9 yards longer at 1 degree less loft. That is pretty significant. Also the Pro I was working with told me he plays a set of G400 and has seen how is mishits off the toes somehow manage to stay in play compared to his previous set of irons. The reviews I have seen onlien from guys like Rick Sheils etc prove out the distance gains in the G400 over its predecessors the G and G30's. So, once i sell off the G's I am going to go back and get fitted for the G400's.

 

Two things:

 

1. What do you mean by "better spin rates"? Higher or lower?

 

2. If you like the G line, don't hit the G700's if you are in any sort of a money saving mode. They are just absolutely wonderful irons.

Higher Spin rate slight higher launch angle. Better fit for me

If you are properly fit, the new irons offer better results on mis-hits, that is what has separated todays irons from the older models.

The biggest break thru in modern equipment for my game is the shaft. I am impressed by the material technology and science that is equating to performance without the boardy feel we had 20 years ago in graphite or steel.

 

I went thru a full equipment fitting in the irons, driver, wedges and putter; it’s a testament to the technology were you can have optimize numbers for your game.
