Seeking info: US Royal clubs

Recommended Posts

They were in the pro line business club wise for a little while I recall. They came out with a ball in the early 70s called the Royal Plus 6. That ball had hexagonal dimples sorta like the Callaway balls of today. The clubs I recall Pro Line wise were the Royal Plus believe it or not they had hexagonal shaped shafts in them. The ladies version was called the Daisy. Those shafts on the irons were shaft over hosel like the Wilson Fat Shafts later on. I do know US Royal had a department store line of balls and clubs too. Those department store line of balls which were Balata hit mushy like rubber and would bounce like a basketball.

My Old Man got hooked on those balls and for a while they were all the rage. The clubs sold well too especially the Daisy line for the ladies they had some ladies bags in that line that were different colors and had daisies on them.

Interesting footnote on the balls. When the first demo balls came out they were in a plain white box marked Pro Shop Demo Only. Those balls would go like a scalded dog. Further than any of the small balls of the day. When the ones packaged for general sale came out they did not go as well. My old man suspected a rat and made a few phone calls. Sent off some of the original demo balls off and had them tested. As he had suspected they had been hopped up. That whole deal was fishy because it was never publicly confirmed. The hex shafts the only place you could get them was through Royal Golf and they were expensive. I remember on of the old man's golf shop friends had a customer that broke one and he had to get the old man to order one since he was a dealer. That whole deal lasted maybe 6 months to a year then it flamed out.

Sam I do not know if yours is a Pro Line or retail store version but it is not a bad looking wedge from the address position.

Sam-

US Royal was a tire company that was into golf for a period. The "Royal Plus 6" golf ball did indeed have hexagonal dimples, many years before...

For your information, the "SAND Wedge" stamp on your club matches the Wilson Staff Dynapowers from their 'late 50s-'60s period.

Though the knurling is different, the "L/P Special" stamp leads one to believe this was similar to the Wilsons being sold at Sporting Goods stores.

Who sold clubs with a tire company name- Tire Stores? Some Wrxer likely has an ad for US Royal Golf equipment, and where to get it.

Who did US Royal sponsor?

Lets review this part again.

"...I picked up this great feeling sand wedge..."

What else matters?

PS- US. Royal became Uniroyal Tire, and the largest tire in the world bearing the Uniroyal name is just off Interstate 94 near Detroit. To my knowledge, the inside frame is an old Ferris Wheel.

Plus Six balls were made by British company called Uniroyal, who are still on the go making very good quality, mid priced car tyres. The factory was in Dumfries, Scotland. The Plus Six was an excellent ball and had some tour usage. I don't recall clubs in the UK but their ammo and tyres were / are still excellent.

I do recall seeing Royal irons in Lee Trevino's bag in 1972 at Oakland Hills in Birmingham, MI. Thought it strange because I'd never heard of them. I also saw other names that weren't necessarily prominent on tour like Northwestern and Rainbow. Northwestern was a popular store line, but I was surprised to see them on tour.

Northwestern had a pro shop line too--- Gary Player played those clubs on tour for a short while--- One of the courses here called Blackmoor which is a Player design has one of his old Northwestern bags on display

They still make heavy duty truck tires too--- I am running 2 on the steer axle of my 2017 Mack truck I drive everyday.

  • 2 years later...

They were proline clubs. I bought my complete set in 1970 from my pro outside Boston. He was on their staff at the time. I played them until 1995 and mistakenly sold Gave away possibly) all but the driver that  I still have - Persimmon blond maple color. I plan to restore the driver now that I am collecting.

I also believe the clubs were originally made by Wilson Staff and US Royal simply white labeled them from Wilson. I need to more research, but my initial research brought me to your post.

DO you have pictures off the clubs?
