The 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National (MERGED)

Recommended Posts

So cool everyone got a point and did have a hand in hoisting the trophy :) Unlike some others in the past who have been passengers.

My vote is that Woods should never be the captain of this team. Just not an inspiring team guy

Not only shouldn't he be captain, but shouldn't be on the team either. He stinks in team play.

I am thinking TW shouldnt play on the team anymore.

But he could be a great captain. Hes pretty analytical and clearly know how to assess talent, courses, and situations.

He should definitely get a shot at the job.

It would take a real change for me to want to see Tiger in the team again. Statistics don't lie and even if he is the GOAT on the regular tour his RC points tally does not cut it.

I think being an assistant is his best role. He can use the skills you identify, I just don't see him as captain as ultimately I don't see the guys busting a gut to play for him the way that they would for other captains. You can't cut a lone figure for 51 weeks of the year and then expect all the guys to rally round if you make captain. I know it's not a popularity contest but that sure does help. It's no coincidence that Clarke and Faldo lost as captains and neither are popular on the European Tour.

I'd expect Phil to be captain within the next 4 years and am not sure how that would go

Furyk comes from the time of the US's worst Ryder Cup performances, why reward that with a Captaincy? We obviously didn't play well, but most of our troubles come down to bad management and pitiful pairings. Personally, I think Furyk was a worse Captain than Pavin or Sutton. Incapable of inspiring anyone, and too dull to be imaginative with the pairings. Scared to see who they pick next.

You gotta be kidding, blaming a non-playing member of the team. Players got to play and when they don't they lose. Simple as that

Is Harrington next up for Europe?

As I mentioned above will Europe have enough Ryder Cup teams to go around for deserving captains?

Sure but the problem is everyone of age/time in their career for being considered, likely has a losing record due to the US losing 9/12 or whatever it is now.

If they really wanted to think outside the box, there is one obvious choice: Butch Harmon

He knows all of them, has been or is a coach/consultant to them and would have their respect. And I don't think anywhere it says they have to pick a player/former player. Pretty sure Butch was/is a card carrying PGA professional* too.

TW seems to have a surprisingly close relationship with some of the young players.

Hes not the same guy on his own island as back in the day.

Be very interesting to see how, if he really cares and wants to motivate a team, he gets this done.

What if he opens up his emotions and shares some secret stuff from his "tool box"?

Its academic, no way he doesnt get a shot at being captain one day.

Ugh. Jordan, Bubba, Phil and Jim need to issue an apology for wasting the PGA of America's money on a plane ticket. What a disgrace. But at least they play lights out at those St. Jude and Greenbriar type courses.

The Jordan that went 3-2? Did you mean to type Tiger instead?

Yep. The Jordan that with the help of someone else went 3-2 but on his own got smoked. I believe we're talking about the same guy.

I enjoy watching team golf. I enjoy watching the Euros play in the Ryder Cup because, somehow, they've figured out how to do this.

I don't know what it is and I don't know if anyone truly knows.

One thing though. The success of these players, both in the RC and here in the states has increased my watching of European Tour golf.

I really think it would help our guys if we played some Euro events. I don't understand why nobody here plays Wentworth.

We need some real competition - perhaps we should start playing a Korean LPGA team when the Merkins are playing the POTUS Cup?

The captain sets the tone and the vice captains are there to help with keeping the guys positive. I’m not sure having you predecessor there is a good idea. It’s one of the things that Europe does well, they have a good mix of characters in the leadership team.

Getting the pairings right is essential. Splitting Reed and Spieth up was madness.

Yeah, I'm really inspired by Freddie Mercury, LOL

At Whistling Straits whenever Team EU faces a must make putt we should play the intro to Crazy Train.

Purses, unfortunately. Only the Rolex series (8 tournaments throughout the season) have better purses than the average PGA event. They are $7.5M, less than the $10M WGC and less than the $11-11.5M from Majors.

A regular ET event might have a purse of around $2.5M, which is $500K less than the worst PGA event. Players play for money, and unless they've secured the card, they have to keep going at it unfortunately.

Jordan was our second best player after Justin. He made half the birdies of the team in best ball and played half the shots in alternate shot. Perhaps the 0-4 Big Cat should be the one apologizing instead.

I'm glad the US team lost.

American PGA players need an ego reset. Too much of the ME in TEAM.

Maybe do away with current ranking for automatic qualifiers. Rank the upcoming regular tour courses by their similarity to the next European venue. Adjust rankings by performance on similar courses. Could have a bunch of 20-60th ranked players on the US squad but they might be more successful.

Overall disappointing in the Sunday matches too, not just the "team" matches. TW was admittedly awful.

Wow. Poulter takes out #1 player in the world. Rahm takes out GOAT. Franceso 5-0. That is some kind of golf.

Justin Rose is #1 for two weeks.

He lost that ranking last week actually

Interesting, need more thinking like that.

Id like to see them take the best 3 or 4 guys under 25 or 26 years old as mandatory picks.

Something is going on that we do not know about....some tense situations. And that is without even mentioning neither Spieth or Reed wanting to open their mouth about not being paired together. But what was REALLY weird was both Spieth's and Johnson's reaction to Tiger.

First, Tiger still sounding like he is on painkillers goes on to tell us how much he has been playing....then fast forward

Spieth not remembering the name of the pod system looks down the long table and asks Tiger.....insert crickets....after about 5 seconds more of silence, Spieth mumbles "Nice talk Tiger"....to which Johnson says, "He played 7 of 8 weeks".....an obvious smart A jab, as in "Look Tiger" we are all tired"

Just some very weird back and forth comments......anyone else notice this? If not, go back and listen.

BTW, some really bad captains picks.

Absolutely. What we just watched isn't real golf. It's a Pete dye disciples idea of a true test. Basically turned each tee shot into a cut of the cards. Or roll of the wheel. USA lost a lot of those dice throws. Rory lost one on 18. He tried to cheat the system and layback and didn't commit. Yet he knew if he hit Driver off 2-3 yards left or right it was trouble. That crosses the line form skill to luck.

What we just saw was a proper test of golf that rewards hitting fairways and penalises wayward shots rather than rewarding a 330 yard bomb that is off line. Players like Simpson had zero issues and the only thing Rory was unlucky with was pulling a plugged lie in a face of a fairway bunker as it shouldn't have so much sand up the face for that to happen. His tee shot was off line and Thomas had no issues finding the fairway. There should be more courses like this.

Lol. Well. If you want golf to die. Yes.

What you miss is taking Driver from long players hands. The way to get where you want to go is shortening the distance they hit Driver. NOT taking Driver away. Rory hit plenty of good drives that don’t find the fairway. A 20 yard wide fairway 320 out is a joke . Crosses the line of accuracy and into plain old luck.

Again. I’m only talking about setup. The euro team players deserve to win. Their skill matched with Lady Luck very well this week. It was the best setup to trip up the horsepower that the USA brought to town. Slow undulating greens plus 8 inch rough. A bombers nightmare.
