Unbelievable putter

Recommended Posts

I don't really get this. The guy is trying to build his own putter - why all the negativity? He's gotta start somewhere and it takes guts to show off the first attempt. His tools are fine, his ideas are reasonable, and he seems to have a decent attitude about it. The Wilson 8802, the Ironmaster, and scores of others never went near a milling machine, especially at conception.

I agree with the advice of using a softer material for your prototypes. Brass is nice looking, easily worked, and widely available. If you make a mistake you can even build it up again by brazing. Brass is not that hard to pour in the home shop either, so you might even cast something. Stainless is a very difficult material to work with mostly hand tools.

I say keep at it. You learn mostly from your mistakes so keep trying. Say... that sounds just like golf!

you said, " stainless steel is a very different to work with mostly hand tools."

True! I work hard on my hand tools.

Don't laugh. Please!

Dang. That's a lot of work with hand tools. I've been tooling some Damascus steel and it takes forever, much less a 316 SS block. Keep up the hard work!

Hmmm, looks like you had the workbench ready to go 10 years ago?!

Not picture for my power tools. What's I have power tools.

- Stand Drilling Press. Bit titanium dits or HSS bits

- Power Sanding Belt rolling

- Saw cutting, Cut-of wheel metal

OK, but why go to the trouble of posting a picture if it's not your actual setup... :busted2:

First-rate troll job in progress here IMO, I'm guessing it ends with an "after" photo that's either:

A) A big joke, like Etiger said in #56

B) A finished putter taken elsewhere from the web (BORING!)

C) A finished putter that was really crafted from the photo posted in #60, whether created by OP's actually capable hands or those of someone he knows or will pay to do so. Looking at what remains, there's still a workable head in there somewhere:

If this is a Choose Your Own Adventure, I choose C.

Please don't disappoint OP!

Here's another questions: If all you have is a drill press and belt sander, how are you planning to get a neck on this thing? You obviously aren't milling it in via a 1-piece billet.... and you don't have a welder... so.... do you plan to throw this thing at the ball? Or maybe some duct tape and a shaft?

Drill for stud placement, install shaft stud, epoxy double bend shaft on.

Is that self tapping or something? Or is he going to epoxy in a threaded stud into a thru hole? He'd also need to make sure the OD of those threads will work with whatever ID of the shaft he uses otherwise he'll be using that belt sander to try and match diameters. Sounds like a PITA.

Don’t know. Just a way to make it work and yes, you can buy to match inside diameter of the shaft.

Easiest way would be to drill a 1/4'' or 1/2'' deep hole that's 3/8'' wide, ream it just a touch so it over-sizes the hole by a few mil, then hammer in a 3/8'' stud (with out threads) to the bottom.

Or if he was crafty, you could probably freeze the stud to shrink it then tap it in, and make it an interference fit. Then use his belt sander to taper the top part of the stud down to like .365 so he can get a .370 shaft over it and epoxy that.

You don't even need a stud. He can just bore a 3/8" hole 3/8" to 1/2" deep and epoxy the doublebend in there. That's what I did. He just needs to figure the porper bore location to get the amount of offset and toe hang he wants. It's pretty simple.

I agree with Ri_Redneck.

I planning bore a 3/8" hole to 1/2" deep and epoxy the double bend in the putter.

Very slowly...work....work....Stainless Stain is a tougher of material. (Itchy head).
