Tips/Drills to lower ball flight

Recommended Posts

First things first, I've never been properly fitted. However, I've had the opportunity to try/test multiple shaft options through the bag and nothing changes. I hit the ball way too high. I have a higher swing speed (115+) with driver and similar down through the irons. I play a driver at 8.5 and it's still too high but that's not exactly the issue. The thing I need help with is iron play. I hit a 4 iron that apexes higher than my playing groups 9 iron. Its obscene. Wondering if anyone has had this problem and corrected it or if this is just my shot and I learn to live with it. I play at a 9, I'm 6ft tall and I rarely take a divot with anything stronger than a 9 iron. Thanks

Very good ball strikers have forward shaft lean at impact with irons. This delofts the clubface , turns a 7 iron into a 5 iron and creates a low point in front of the ball.Forward shaft lean is also present with a driver ,but is obscured by the fact that the ball is played more forward in your stance,is teed up and has a low point at or even slightly behind the ball.

Try the below drill to help develop this shaft lean.

Take your wedge and try to hit the ball under the H created by the alignment shaft and the noodle.Do NOT cheat by moving the ball further back in your stance and/or by moving your upper body forward more than a very small amount going down, because doing either will defeat your purpose by adding additional spin resulting in a ballooning shot.

Shouldn’t be a problem unless you are losing distance or playing in strong wind. Could also be a swing fault. I’d leave it to the experts.

I’ve played the ball back in my stance to lower the flight, but this brings shanks and hooks in play. I think the easiest way is club up and feel like you are swinging a little smoother/slower.

Sounds like you’re flipping and possibly have a reverse pivot. Either have a lesson or post a video.

Flipping was my first guess as well. As to WHY you're flipping, we have no clue, it could be any number of things. Players don't flip because they flip, they do it as a compensation for other things that happen prior to the flip. Drills to conquer the flip are unlikely to get at the root cause of the flip, you'll just be substituting some other compensation for the compensation you currently have. Get some knowledgeable eyes to watch you and help you diagnose the issue.

Yeah, you aren't generating enough forward shaft lean. The drill above will help and once you have the feeling of hitting the ball correctly, it will come easy. You'll also find that you will hit your irons longer with less effort.

BTW, I take a divot with everything except Driver! You should too.
