Kobe123 - AMG Golf Lesson/Progress - Lesson #3 *Updated!!*

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Wanted to report in and make this a progress thread as I'm about to start taking lessons with AMG Golf, specifically Mike Granato and couldn't be more excited. I go Saturday to Cartersville, GA for a one hour lesson with Mike. Here is some current things about me.

Handicap: No official, but I'd say roughly 3-4

Misses: Block fades, Snap Hooks, and Toe Balls.

Problems: Early Extension, Long swing, and probably a whole lot more

Worst Club: Driver (All over the place)

Best Club: Mid-Irons/60*

Goal: Get to scratch, improve ball striking and have a ONE way miss and compete in tournaments next year.

I'm looking forward to getting better and learning from the wealth of knowledge Mike has.

Thanks All and I look forward to letting you all know how it goes.

Here is two videos:

All,

Wanted to put my experience with AMG golf and Mike Granato from this Saturday. Mike is based out of Cartersville, GA and is roughly a 3hr drive each way from Nashville, Tn. This place is top notch has every bit of technology I'd ever seen. Flightscope, swing catalyst, this device that measures wrist angles, etc.

I arrive at 12:30, talk to Mike about my misses, my goals, and just general talk. About 12:45 I get some warm up swings and we get to work.

First thing he noticed was my right leg was straightening in the upswing causing my swing to become long and get out of timing. Basically, I was over swinging and having a lot of hip turn. We worked on this by doing some half swing drills where my right knee maintained flexion while my left knee worked inward.

Second, he noticed i was hinging very early in the swing causing my right wrist to become cupped and cause face issues. Incorporated this thought into the half swing drills where my swing thought was to not hinge my wrists early. We confirmed this by putting a device on my wrist and measured wrist angles. I was positive 45. We tried to get this in the 20 range which is extremely hard for me.

Third, we wanted my weight to get to my left side sooner. This was confirmed by the swing catalyst which is an awesome tool. I recommend everyone try to get on one. It's eye opening.

I know this was a basic post but here are some swing videos to go along with my progress.

Conclusion: Mike is a great guy with extreme knowledge. An absolute GURU. If you ever have the chance to take a lesson with him or anyone at AMG golf it's an eye opening experience and worth every minute and every dollar. I already planned a second lesson and can't wait to continue the progress.

Really nice action! Looks like the club is pretty shut on that 8i video. Do you play with a pretty strong grip? Look forward to following along!

I noticed it was very shut too, I'm not sure what is causing it at the moment more or less working on my knee action and no wrist hinge. I don't believe it's my grip but it very well could be. (feel free to look @ the driver video and assess) Next lesson is on October 20th! This winter is where I want the progress to really come along!

To my amateur eye, your left wrist looks flat at the top, so I would think the grip has to be pretty strong for the club face to be that shut. I'm assuming it's a non-issue though since your instructor didn't have you address that at all.

I struggle with swinging too long as well, and am working to shorten up my backswing.

Make sure your right knee is not straightening and I feel as if I don't hinge my wrists and it causes it to be shorter. We may address that next lesson I'm not sure.

Not sure how you could be a 3 cap with that swing unless you putt like a caveman.

Inconsistent ball striking and big misses.

You mention EE in your OP. I'm not seeing it - is that something that you talked about with Mike? What did he say about your big misses?

All,

I had my 2nd lesson with Mike on Saturday and wanted to give you all an update. I arrive 30 minutes as usual, but this time at the actual Cartersville Country Club, which is very nice. When I arrive I tell Mike about my Misses which have been snap hooks(only with the driver), pulls (irons) , and blocks (driver). He watches me swing a few and said he was very impressed with how tight my

Swing looked from the first lesson.

He watches me hit about 20 balls and addresses the issue immediately, which is my upper body is turning way to fast so I’m smothering the golf ball. He then gives me the feel as to let the arms start the downswing and keep my chest back. When I do this, it reduces Me relying on timing, which is why I’ll play very good or very bad. He also had me focus on hitting shot shapes which I’d never done before.

Essentially, this what I worked on for the entire hour was letting arms start downswing and keep my upper body back as long as possible. If you want to see exactly what I’m talking about go to Athletic Motion Golf Instagram and watch there post where Justin Rose speaks. My next lesson is December 1st. Let me know what you all think!

Here is an update swing video:

Nice pass with that driver. Mike seems like a cool dude. Earlier this year I took a couple online lessons from him and I always watch all their youtube stuff. Keep up the good work.

Super cool dude, only wants to see his people get better. What I'm working on now is extremely hard, and he even told me it's going to be difficult but it will be well worth the change. Now only if my left elbow would stop hurting.

I had to move out of my x100s because of my elbow. My SteelFibers are great - should have changed to them long ago.

Mine is from hitting on a mat with concrete underneath. I'm going to take some time off and do exercises.

Great thread. Did you ever figure out what causes your clubface to look a bit closed at the top?

No we haven't addressed that issue yet, I think he wants me to get the fundamentals down before we make clubface changes. He told me to hit thousands of balls and engrain keeping the chest back. He said it was going to be extremely difficult and will a lot of time.

Interesting that he wanted you getting to your right side faster after the first lesson, but wants you initiating downswing with your arms after second lesson. Is the feel of starting with your arms contradictory at all to his desire to get your weight over sooner?
