Building a set for tall people

I'm 6'4 and always had an upright swing. Baseball elbow flies out and i feel like a large reason for that is club length. I've been fit several times and people have put me anywhere from standard to 1 inch long.

 

Still I feel like I hunch over and can't go on a normal plane.

 

Has anyone ever built a set 2 inches over or anything like that?

 

I want to try and do a larger set and likely bend them 3 or 4 degrees upright.

 

Any experiences are helpful

2 inch is extreme because we will meet head weight problem going that much above standard

A set that normally would be D2 will play to E4 if we cant get heads made for over length.

 

Its normally the short end who is problematic for higher player, not the long, so consider going 3/8" to be able to make a set that works all the way, and to avoid some of the issues with using standard wgt heads.

 

Look into this link and a small chart and pay attention to how the set looks if we started from the #3 iron and only went 3/8" shorter pr club

Its that "concept" you might look at, but starting from a longer #3 iron than standard so both the long and short end becomes good, without the need to go above plus 1.0 in any end

I'm the extreme case here, I guess. I have lower back issues which prevent me from staying in an athletic posture for too long. My first custom set was built 2" over standard and 3.5 degrees upright. My swingplane is upright, as well. For me, I don't mind the added weight (e2-e4) and standard length demos feel like toys to me at the stock D0-D2. All my subsequent sets have been built to these specs. My static fitting specs would be +1/2" and 2up. (6'3" and 38" WTF).

Lets keep this simple,

 

1. Determine what your low length limit is for a wedge

2. 3-4* upright is just too much! 1* to a max of 2* is much better

3. Build your set up (length) from using a compressed spacing. While 3/8" spacing along with progressive swing weighting gets really close to a MOI balanced set, personally I think this is still too much. 1/4" spacing between irons is the max I now recommend. Personally again I play 1/8" spacing and love them (LW is 37.25" - 5 iron 38.25").

4. Use single length heads for the short irons and wedges. The reduced head weights allow you to build much at much longer lengths without the sledgehammer effect.

5. Don't be scared to experiment!

 

 

A fellow member who joined our club early in the summer is 6' 6" and every club in his bag is +2", lob wedge through driver and putter. He's an outstanding player! Our wedges are the same but his long irons are much longer.
