Cause and Effect in the Golf Swing.

I’ve been wanting to start this topic for a while and have a few minutes now while on lunch at work. I just wanted to get a running topic on the Cause and Effect aspect of the golf swing. Basically for your own swing, if you do (X), it causes (Y) to happen. What different C&E do you get when you try to to manipulate your swing to hit certain shots? I figure if we get enough replies it should be quite helpful to people. I know no to swings are alike and everyones results will be slightly different but we should be able to get a general idea of the big things anyways.

 

Example, for myself. If I try to hit a big cut, I generally end up rolling my hands over and hitting a pull draw. Or if I try to go after one harder I’ll generally get stuck and hit a big push fade. If I weaken my grip I tend to make contact towards the toe and if I strengthen my grip contact tends to migrate towards the heel of the club.

The one that comes to mind the most: If you are having trouble swinging to the left or coming steep and OTT, try to keep the club head more outside the hands in the takeaway and make sure you start with a left hip move. This looping outside causes the club head to loop under the hands and promotes a shallow in to out path. Do the opposite if you are coming too much from the inside. David Ledbetter wrote an enitre book (the A swing) around this phenomenon.

 

 

 

To make sure you absolutely do not hit it to the right: At address: Push the handle forward toward the target and re-grip the club. When you return the face to impact, it will absolutely be closed, no question. I do this in a small amount if I have trouble running up the right side.

 

To make sure you absolutely do not hit it to the left: At address: Pull the handle back/away from the target, so the shaft is tilting away from the target a little. Re-grip the club. When you return the face to impact, it will be open.

 

 

Close the face with your head: Holding your head down and back is an old school way to shut the toe of the club head/ release the face.

 

 

If you are hitting your wedges fat/coming into the ball too steep: Focus on letting the wedge fall through into the follow through. That feeling of letting the wedge FALL through always results in hitting ground in front of the ball, as long as your weight is on the front foot.

 

Distance control from the bunker: When you are in the bunker, forget the ball is even there. Instead, lay the wedge open a bit and focus on using your bounce to splash the sand that the ball sits on onto the flag without touching the ball. You will naturally adjust how hard to hit the sand based on how hard it looks and feels. The ball tends to go as far as the sand.

 

I tend to over turn. When I start doing this, I've found that adding wrist hinge earlier relieves the urge.

 

 

Hold your left hand out in front of your face, straight up and down. Now hinge it back like a waiter holding a try: That is right side of the fairway. Do the opposite, point the palm of your had at the ground, that is left side.

for me it is where my hands end in respect to target. If i focus my hands ending at the target ball is straight, if i focus hands ending right of target ball is draw and if i focus on hands ending left of target then ball is fade
