Ping Sigma2 Putters

Recommended Posts

Tried out the Sigma 2 line at the golf store today

Colors = really liked the platinum & blue combo (so subjective)

Feel was nice. I currently use a Sigma G Shea H and, honestly, had trouble telling/explaining the difference. Sigma 2 was a tad softer, I think. What I DID like was the “ting” the Sigma 2s make. Prefer their audio over that of the the Sigma G.

Models: Really enjoyed the ZB2. I’m a Strong Arc putter (or, at least, am going through that phase right now) and liked the top line look and the alignment line. Wanted to love the Tyne 4 but couldn’t feel the ball like I could on the ZB2. Tyne 4 is my favorite one to look at but the contact just didn’t feel right. The heaver Anser (finally, 350g) feel and rolled nicely...but see Strong Arc note above :)

Shaft: I definitely felt the “flexiness” others have called out when waggling. Was more pronounced in the heavier Tyne mallets. The blades were chill in this regard, especially the ones that were adjusted to 34 when compared to the ones adjusted to 35. Did not feel any rattling.

Fetch! I love looking down at the circle alignment feature but the stoke arc isn’t for me. Also, for a mallet, the actual hitting service seems a little narrow. Felt pretty baller picking balls up off of the surface (i.e. to grab a gimme tap in...I should have tried it out of the hole). Very smooth and repeatable vs. my hit or miss attempts to pick and flip the ball up and catch it with the back of my Anser-style putters.

Punchline: I like the ZB2, the flex doesn’t concern me on that model with my usual 34 / 34.5 length...and I like that I can experiment up to 36 in length.

Note: Putts were dropping. Do golf stores do the miniature golf thing where everything funnels to the hole?

I agree about the shaft... Felt it flex on a couple of long putts. I would also agree the putter is super soft, almost to soft. I really like the shape and look of it though. Just need to get used to it .

Putted with these a good bit this weekend. I am a mallet guy and really liked the concept of the Fetch and also its looks. Once I got over the ball, something about the small face area just threw me off. I tried the Tyne as well. Really liked it but again there is something about Ping's double bend shaft and the way it flows into the head that threw me off. Didn't like the other mallets as much and wasn't even going to try the Tyne 4 as it is listed as a strong arc and I have always faired better with SBST. I tried it on a whim and once I rolled a few it was checking all the boxes. I also have an Evnroll ER8 in my arsenal and I checked the toe hang against it. As best as I can tell, they are practically identical on toe hang and I have never had any issues with the Evnroll. I really like the feel of these putters. Having used the Evnroll and also using many Odysseys, these are just in between those 2 from a softness perspective. Not sure how well the TR Grooves work on the polymer face as compared to a milled face though. I ended up leaving with a Tyne 4 and I am going to try it with the original grip for a while. Its a tad small for me compared to my SS GTR 2.0 but it may well work. Great line by Ping this time and they are going to sell a ton of these.

I think the Elevado looks a lot like the cameron, but the Tyne is different to me.. much longer, uh tines... now, Dicks put out a Tommy Armour putter that looks like a absolute clone of the Tyne.... lol

Man, guys must have some serious swing speed on their putter stroke if they're worried about flexiness of their putter shafts... :russian_roulette:

Hahahahahahahhahaha. I get it, but in all reality shaft flex is a critical component of how a putter will perform for your given stroke.

Nike actually frequency matched Tigers shafts to his gamer Cameron GSS as they attempted to recreate the feel.

There are so many putter shafts that have a specific flex/feel that have a cult following honestly. Wilson headspeed, long first step (9 1/2") ping, tp mills pencil shaft, satin bullseye shaft, fluted bullseye Shaft, stepped cameron shaft from cameron studio stainless series, etc, etc.

Shaft plays a very important role in how balanced a putter feels and how a putter "releases"

I agree, the Tyne is just a bit too long front to back. ZB2 is really nice but not sure it is a "must buy" for me.

I was actually surprised by the Valor. Ridiculously stable and point and shoot if you like face balanced mallets.

Agreed. Valor for me seems like cheating.

Putted one side by side with my Newport 2 (2012) today and couldn't honestly feel much of a difference. At least with their newport styled putter but the roll seems a hair more assisted and better. It wouldn't make me want / need to switch.

That being said, I do like the new mallet offerings. They are looking real true.

I think these inserts are too soft. There’s hardly any feel to them. Also not a fan of the blue. What is ping doing here? Give us an all black Tyne with a slant neck and the sigma or vault insert.

A vault Tyne 4 would be perfect. I like mine but don’t love it yet

don't you mean your Scotty Cameron Anser styled putter. Scotty copied the Anser putter from Ping just like every other manufacture.

Why does everyone want a softer feel to their putter?

I would rather have a feel that tells me I hit the putt.

I want an audible sound not a marshmallow feel along with a soft feeling ball that gives you no feedback so you do not even know that you hit the ball.

I agree. Cleveland HB Soft, Sigma 2, why is everyone going softer? I am digging the new adjustable length tech, but I much prefer the feel of the older Redwood and Anser Milled pre TR grooves.

Agree and would add Vault line of putters for not being too soft and having just the right amount of audible feedback

I put the Sigma 2 Kushin C in my bag yesterday. I've used a 34" putter for years and decided to set the Kushin C up at 33". I love the soft feel and cut 4 shots(14 putts) on the greens from my previous 9 I had played with my Vault 2.0 Ketsch(18 putts). The ball rolled very true and held it's line. After making a couple of 10 footers I had a ton of confidence on the putting surface.

I tried a few of the models the other day. I liked it very much just wish they made the Anser head in a counterbalanced model I really liked how it felt and rolled. It felt just as soft as my Odyssey tank #1. But it rolled the ball much better. If they make this in a counterbalanced version it could replace my odyssey tank #1.

I think some of it is how hard some of the premium balls feel off a putter honestly. The non S Bridgestone and the srixon xv feel clicky to me off a fine milled stainless putter. Some people like the click others prefer a softer feel/sound

I also have this question. I am hoping it is similar to the first gen of Ping adjustable shaft where the grip fits on a "sleeve" that moves up & down. I am sold on the Flat Cat grip - not being able to use the FC grip is a non-starter for me.

+1 for the Flat Cat. Only tried the original, but now pretty sure they come in 5 different sizes.

To those making fun of talking about putter shaft flex.

Crenshaw and Beman definitely had opinions on putter flex.

https://books.google...r shaft&f=false

Good for them, they were Pros...99.9% of the average amateur golfers will never get that good and thus worrying about putter shaft flex is a waste of time until they have mastered a good repeatable putting stroke...

This is WRX, everyone on here is either pro or going pro, with that being said, even the term putter flex is pathetically hilarious, people make too big of a deal with little things that have little or no effect to try and come up with a reason as to why they finish a round with 60 putts per round, like there has to be an answer as to why they’re not as good as Jason Day yet, go to the practice green like a normal human being.

I can tell the difference in flex between my 8802 and my MilSpec and I'm only a mid single digit handicapper who’s putts per round is between 29 and 32 putts per round, and an average stroke at best.

Putter shaft and flex is a very overlooked part of putter fitting. The best putter fitter I ever saw actually fit the flex of the shaft to your tempo. Contrary to popular belief the shaft DOES flex and torque during a putting stroke. There's such a slim margin for error putting everything makes a difference imo. (unless you average 60 putts a round like the example above in which case I don't think anything is going to help you.)
